The above is the title of the new railway company of which we made short mention last week.

The board of directors live mainly in Independence and the following gentlemen of that city hold the position Henry Foster, president, P. V. Hock-ett, treasurer and M. S. Stahl, secretary.

The road is to start from Independence and follow the Verdigris valley to near its source and then diverge northward to Emporia. Branch lines are to be built, one to Chanute to connect with the railways at that place and another from some point on the line to Leroy to connect with the Gould system at that poiut. If men cf energy and good business qualities take hold of this road it can be made one of the best paying lines the state as it runs through a vallej' that is one of the richest in the state, being filled with fine farms, grain, hogs, cattle and everything that would conduce to a good carrying traffic. Besides, this road intersecting or crossing other roads instead of running parallel will give its patrons the advantage of competing lines eastward and other lines will be anxious to gain its good will. The Independence papers all seem to think that it will be of immense advantage to that town and speak of the benefits to be derived from the building of the road for their eity in the most glowing terms, and what they say of it for Independence applies as well in almost every instance to Neodesha and the people of that city ma- be assured that the leading men of this city and country will be with them and do all in their power to aid the enterprise.

It is just exactly what we need, an outlet north, giving us the advantage of rival lines to Kansas Citr, St Louis and Chicago and should it not be built one will be built some daj- from Emporia or Burlington southwestward and it maj" diverge westward before reaching this place. A committee of Independence men ha3 been appointed to take subscriptions under the following heads: First, to raise $1,000 to make a pre liminary survey of route second, for an amount to be paid when the road is graded from Independence to Neodesha third, for an amouii to be paid when the first train shall be run over the road between the points mentioned. The two latter subscriptions are not to fall below $30,000. The men in charge are among the best citizens of Independence and we hope to see the work carried on with as anyone will see the great advantages that would accrue to this town and county from this line of railway. We are indebted to the Independence Star for many of the facts embodied in this article.

We neglected to mention in last Mcck's issue the death of the infant child of Ed Allen which occurred on the 20th of November. Ed has our profound sympathy and that of all of his friends in this his second bereavement since last spring, and we pray that iu the great hereafter he may be happily united with those, whom he loved so well, who have only gone before him a few daj-s. Our City Council at their meeting last Tuesday directed the Mayor to have the alley crossings on 8th street built, to have the calaboose painted and to appoint a competent person to examine the fines in the city and when any that were defective were found to have the owner repair iu accordance with aa ordinance previously passed. Talk about hard times when j-ou can buy salt at $2. 10 a barrel, as much sugar as 3-011 can carry home for $1, coffee enough to last for six: mouths for $1, good flour at 1 per sack, the best 3-ard wide sheeting at to GJ cents per yard, 20 to 25 yards good calico for 1 all this at DeFord Bros.

23 We stepped into DeFord Bros' new store the other day and was astonished to see the immense stock of good of all descriptions which he has ell hand. It speaks well for the business of our cit' when men can handle such a stock of goods during the present close times. Joseph Hamilton expects to receive a car load of furniture soon to replenish his already mammoth stock. We will put his store against that of airy other firm in this part of the state for completeness of stock and beautiful furniture. Alfred Catron has rented his farm southeast of town on Salt Creek and returned to Virginia to rejoin his wife who has been there for some time.

They expect to make a protracted visit at their old home. Miss Randall has just received an entirely new stock of the finest of millinery goods which she is selling at proportionately low prices. Her good are all of the latest st3'les and newest designs. Cherryvale has sued for an injunction to prevent the county commissioners of Montgomery county issuing the court house bonds voted on and declared carried at the late election. Mr.

M. Tullis and family, who live just across the mound on the Sycamoro slope, were at church, their house together with its contents was destroyed by fire. The origin of the lire is a mystery" as they are confident that they left the fire in their stove perfectly secure, and about an hour after their departure Mr. Tullis' brother passed near the house and all was safe at that time. Mr.

Tullis is a poor man and can ill afford this loss. It is to ba hoped that some kind and charitable friend will devise some way by which those sympathizing with Mr. Tullis may give him something more substantial than sympathy and coudoleuce. J. M.

Keck brought a complaint before Squire Wells last Monday against three young boys, whose names we will not mention, but who are entirely too old to be guilt' of such thoughtless conduct, amounting to almost criminality, for misdemeanor, their misdeed consisting of removing the gate from his lot just west of the Fall river bridge and allowing his stock to run at large. The gale was left in a mud hole near by. The boj-s plead guilt' and our kind-hearted Justice only fined them the lowest amount possible. The boys must remember though that such misdeeds do not always meet with like leniency. I.
