To show our reasons for making this assertion, we take the common sense view of the subject and look at it in the most impartial light and reveal first, the fact that from Ashland to Meade Center (as our Ashland friends claim the road will run) the nature of the country traversed would -entail an expense almost, if, not twice as great as would the road through Kngle-wood, while the latter line is only about miles further. Again the line to Knglewood is establised will soon be completed and in operation at this point. It would seem that Dodge was falling back in the old rut and it is to be deplored to see the names of prominent men attached to such a scheme.

But, then, Dodge some peculiar people, who have very narrow and diseased ideas of propriety and honor. This can be noticed clearly by glancing at the columns of at least one of their papers, that aspires in name to imitate our sphere, when the poor, weak-minded, milk-and-water concern is not read outside the narrow limits of the provincial town it is printed in, except as it strays away. Through the vast regions of the beautiful fertile and productive No-mans-Iand and Panhandle country, and on to the very Gulf coast the main line is to be extended.

Taking into consideration then, the natural topography of our surrounding country, our location in our neighbor, Podge City, by her failing to "take time by the forlock" and march to the front, while she was yet master of the situation. But by her tardy action she has lost grounds that can never be're-gained, opportunities that rarely occur but onee in a life-time. Englewood stands now where Dodge City did when she occupied the same southernly position with reference to other towns that we do. A few years ago Dodge Ciry was the main shipping point for all the immense herds of cattle that yearly left the rich pastures of southwestern Kansas, the No-mans-land and the 'Panhandle. Henceforth, Englewood will take her "place, and not only will-she load up all the stock, grain and products of that vastly rich country, but from the Cars will be unloaded within her limits the thousands of eniniigrants and train- Aji It-ton.
