True, she. like Wichita, has been a frontier cattle shipping town, and has been hard enough, to be sure, and is still a western frontier town, with the usual elements, in Such cases to com Scmser Davis, M.D., PHYSICIAN AND SURGEON. Englewood, Kansas Is the place to buy dry goods; bat with, but after spending part of two weeks, and taking close observa ELLIOTT'S tions, in justice to Dodge we must say that we were agreeably surprised to find her a bustling, business emporium, with a fine graded public school building, one of the best court houses in the state, three good church with large congregations GROCERIES RESTAURANT and flourishing Sunday schools, big stores, big stocks, hotels running over, fine business men, courteous county officials, and a rousing big brick build west.

The county was originally established as six townships or thirty six miles square. However, at its last session, the "fool legislature" took a six mile sfrip off of the west side and added it to Meade. The original boundaries may be restored at the next session of the legislature. Being unorganized, Clark county at present, with Meade, is attached to Ford for judicial purposes, and on some of the late maps it all appears as Ford countv. As will be seen rorft the map, Clark i.s one of the best watered counties in southern Kansas, which is a very valuable feature, as in most of Southwestern Kansas good running water is a very scarce arcicle.

The surface and soil of the county is varied in the east and northeast portions is is rather rough and roiling, only the narrow valleys being tillable, the north and north western portions lay beautif ul and level, the soil is a deep, rich, black loam, its only dra back being a gretit depth to water, one hundred to one bundled and fifty feet, but the value of the land will soon overcome that. Through the central portion there is some broken land, while the southern portion laying in the valleys of the Cimarron and its tributaries; in which Englewood 13 located, is as fine a body of rich bottom land as the eye could wish, to behold. In this portion plenty of good soft water can be had at fifteen to forty feet. The soil is mulatto and black loam, undoubtedly- productive, as much of it is alluvial. All the rougher portions grow good grass, is well watered, and i3 especially desirable for stock.

As but ew claims had been taken previous to last summer, it has not as yet been demonstrated what kind of crops will grow best, while from the nature of the soil and climate, if it i3 seasonable, we see no reason why the various cieal and grass crops should not do well, especially As for fruit, it will surely make a fine fruit country. Taken as a whole, the agricultural portion for grain, and the broken portion for stock raising, Clark county is destined to at once take rank among the first counties of southern Kansas. ing boom.
