John Venflinff Cneap "Whit Skull fho HarTflst Be?" ew Drug Firm, There is nothing like living in a country where things are uncertain. Last week it was snowing, and this week Xickerson's restaurant dealers are dishing up ice cream in homoepathie doses at ten cents a plate. Hutchinson has got an elephant on her hands. She wants to her new bridge bonds off onto the county. We admire plenty of cheek, but for double extract of gall that sweeps the platter.

Oh, that is too much. The man elected this fall will be no accident. The verdict of.tlie voters will be not an uncertain sound. If a republican candidate is looking for support from republican newspapers he must conduct themselves accordingly. We are requested to announce that those favorites, the Richardson orchestra, will furnish the music for the base ball grand ball, May 20th.

This is an assurance of a grand success, and a delight to all those who shall be present Strawberries were sprung on the market Wednesday at only 35 cents per box. The bottom oi the boxes were within an inch of the top. One cent, and a half each for strawberries is not very much, but just a little bit to high for the printers to indulge. Conductor Frank Ahlrich and wife are back from their Peoria visit. Miss Dollie Mat-tin, of Dodge City, is visiting the daughters of Frank Worries. Miss Ella Beemer was visiting relatives in Topeka the fore part of this week. Mrs. E.

Walters, of Emporia, is visiting in the city for a short time, with her sister, Mrs. J. Conroe. Mrs. G.

W. Sain will go to Brook-held. to visit ner parents and son. She will be gone several weeks. Mrs.

Minnie Cole, of Great Bend, was in the city Wednesday and Thursday visiting her brother, Walter Webb. Mrs. Mulford, who has been visiting her friend, Mrs. J. X.

Woods; for the past several weeks, has returned to her home in Aurora, 111. The Misses Julia Bryan and Jennie Delano, and John Walters, Walter Webb and -Harry Whi taker will take in the sights at Great Bend Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wright are visiting friends in Great Bend this week.

Frank is getting along fine and can handle the crutches like an old timer. Harry Brisrhtman and Waile Way-man were visitors to Sterling last Sunday. They say it is the nicest place in the west to gct button-hole bouquet. Will Eiggs, who has been the effi cient night caller for the Santa Fe here ior so long a time, has quit ana gone to the home of his parents in Pawnee Rock. narry D.

Fisher, an old Xickerson railroad boy, dropped into town the fore part of this week and surprised his many friends. He has been running on the Missouri Pacific, but owing to poor health was compelled to lay off and recuperate. J. E. Codding, solicitor of the Topeka Daily Commonwealth, was a pleasant caller at our office last Saturday.

The paper he represents is a good one and has many wa-m friends in Xickerson. Mr. Codding is a very pleasant gentleman to meet, and the Commomrealth could have no better advocate on the road than this gentleman. Rev. Isaac Erret, of Cincinnati, 0 a cousin of Banker Marshall, was in me cuy jioncav.

jkcv. fcrret was a warm personal friend of the lamented Garfield. His beautiful tribute to the spotless life of President Garfield at his i funeral will live as long as the records of our nation. He delivered a lecture on the "Life and Services of Jas. A.

Gar- I field." Monday night in Hutchinson, to a large and appreciative audience. He also preached the dedicatory sermon of 1 the Christian church in that city last Sthidav. Xo better business man or more perfect gentleman i.i all his intercourse with his fellow eitizens than A. S.Kent exists. Always affable, courteous, concise and liberal in his ideas, he holds a high place in the esteem of his associates in busi- ness and society in general.

The Saurian of the Hutchinson Umno-rrnt Mows his rid born toward The Register again in his last isnie. nd as usual, that polulion of atmospheric pur- i ity wa laden with a li. can lie seen in the Register. The business men of Xickerson know that so long as they treat The Register as they have in the past that no ad. aave one calling attention to a business not represented I in Xickerson by patrons of The Regis- ter. would be put in its column? at any price. The "advance" man sized up the snindle-fhanked, crane-necked, monslros- ity who came in and lied about his er- rami in a certain business house in that vm in iiMtfii ins IMFIIience to piay "IOg in the manger." and although he was asha-ned tell ns his name when we asked it, we made np our mind we had met the Sour ion.

There are papers in I ITutehin.soii with "influence. irculation, but the Saurian labors under a de- lusinn when he thinks that his frost-bit ten cabbage leaf is one of them. A business man said to nson Thursday that it every itinerant was allowed to come to Xicktt'-son and hawk snide goods without license, and he paying 150 taxes each year, he intendod to close up bus iness at the end of the year and leave the town. A man that comes to Xicker- son and takes a measure for a shirt I should be licensed just the same as one wno comes and sells books by subscription or prospectus. Webster says (ami some have conceeded him to be fair authority) that peddling is "to go from plat to place or froin home to home," and "to do small and '-to sro from customer to customer." It wnn 1 seem, from a careful stii-Iy of these definitions, that it would be "the proper act to license all venders who vld'" fiv measures in whits or bhiok either with or without a sea-i up or a potket in front.

give advantage over homa merchants. Will the council take the hull by the horns? We believe they will and in the right way, too. City Printing. Bids for the city printing for the ensuing year were sent in to the ity council night, by tli3 publishers the Arynsy and The Register. Tha former's bid was 40 cents er square for all official proceedinsrs, and the latter put in a "lump" bid 820.

Inasmuch as there" will be rom 125 to 150 squares to publish in the year, it will be observed that Bro. Brown's bid would amount to from 50 to SCO per year, and erhaps more. The Register realised that ih? city was a little "pinched" for money and put its bid at about half what would be a very reasonable price. Tlte Arlington Messrs. They received a good horse, and should they ever return to would receive a warm greeting. The support was good throughout. Several of our citizens attended the dedication ceremonies of the new Christian church at Hutchinson last Sunday.

Among the number jircscnt our reporter noticed the following persons: Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Marshall.

seems to have been the only off one of the family. We saw his wife and little sop at Ilntcpincon the other day. One could not but sympatize deeply with the lady and child, for whatever he may have been to the world, be was to them husband and father. Such scenes are sad indeed. The people with whom we talked seemed highly impressed with the exemplary conduct of the bereaved wife and mother.

On Friday night of last week, some dastardly combination of the coward, tramp, villain and thug, followed Mes-dames Mulford and Delano from Odem's grocery to up near Banker Marshall's residence, where he walked briskly up and attempted to snatch a hand sachel from Mrs. Mulford. Xothing but presence of mind and a death-like grip on the sachel by both ladies kept the brute from being successful in his mad scheme for money. Xickerson can ill afford to brook the presence of such thugs within her corporate limits. We would suggest to the housewife that she meet all persons at the door, who look like a tramp, with a warm reception a basin of boiling water.

Xever did we feel more loth in meking mention of any one leav'rig Xickerson than we do in mentioning the removal of Thos. Saunders and familv. To leam the esteem in which thev were held by our people one needed but to go to the depot last Sunday when they Jrtook their depa -iiire fo" their new home in South Pnehlo A la -ro nninW nf friends had gathered to bid them a safe jorrpey smd good-bye. Mr. Saunders informed a Register reporter that he thought he would return toXickersan this fall, pud we know this wi.ll be welcome rews to our readers.

To show his regret at leaving our city we have to give but one remark which he made in our presence: "I never hated to leave a place so bad in my life." Blasting Brick The grocery store of Piirdy Hickman, of SterMng, presented a'most forlorn appearance on last Tuesday morning. About 5 o'clock some fiend in human shape effected an entrance and without any apparent object in view, placed a fuse so as to connect with a ten pound can of powder, ignited it and retired to a safe distance to await the inevitable result. The concussion blew the side out of the brick building, the glass out of the front, letting about half the roof downand making ageneral wreck of rafters, shelves, stock and fixtures. It was indeed a most deplorable sight. The frame of the awning in front of the building was filled with pieces of glass, and the street in front was strewn with portions of the wreck.

The firm went philosophically to work to repair the damages. The object, if done by some person with XihUistic proclivities, remains a mystery, and if the perpetrators are caught the severest penalty of the law will be meted out to them. iMMSY China and The Highest Prices Paid K3-GIVE US A CALL, Appel Misses Hollar Gardner, DRBSs-MAKERs OVER ODEM'S GROCERY.
