When I invested my money in 3'our city I thought seriously as I might have thought of any other city in your state it was a very great chance until Mr. Albright said to me.

"Make no mistake. These are nice people and know how to do business, you cannot better your self." His prophetic words have been verified and today I enjoy patronage far in excess of anything I might have'auticipated. I regret Mr. All bright's departure more than words can express and will be content with the patronage left to me by reason of hie association. When my new pharmacist arrives, with whom Mr.

Allbright is acquainted, I will assure uniformly courteous treatment and solicit a con tinuance of your patronage. Respectfully, T. B. Enochs. An Outing in New Mexico.

While soihe of our people are grumbling about the dry and hot weather, we have taken several drives around the country lately and must say that corn looks excellent, and if we have a good rain inside of ten davs will have a fine crop of corn in this vicinity. A Card and Good Bye, I regret that today my business interests calls me hence from Nickerson.

My long acquaintance with most people in the couutv, and particularly this vicinity, with whom I have had the pleas ure to do business tor the last seventeen rpars. makes the Dartins more reeretful I came to Nickerson to stay a few weeks to assist Mr. Enochs in organizing his rimer business, which now has crown to mammoth proportions and which will continue to arrow under the new man- ao-oment. Mv stav here has been length piipfl hv reason of associations most nleasaiit to me. There are lots of nice people in Nickerson, and in the language of Juliet, "Parting is sncb sweet sorrow, I could say good-night until tomorrow In savinff srood bve I beg to thank you for your expression of confidence in our ability to serve you in a pnarmaceuucni and also in a medical way, and "ever when" you cant get what jrou want, or you get what you tio not want iumuai you do want, orwnaiever you want ami cannot get, my address is Hutchinson.

Air. jvnorigut nas oeen connect ed with the drug emporium or T. Enochs for a eood many years, and dur ing his long business association with the people of this vicinity has made many warm friends. In Mr. Allbright's departure Nickerson loses a valuable and esteemed citizen.

Conductor Chas. Brown, who is punching tickets in the presence of pas sengers" on the old renaoie ranta ie left at noon today for a visit with friends in Hutchinson, ewton and Wichita. Charlie was examining the mechanism of the switch engine just before his departure, and to the surprise of himself and all present, particularly the former, the "pony" objected to such a close examination and "spit" all over him. The result was. the air blue with profanity for at least 30 minutes, and circus showed here yesterday and met with what it deserved a very poor house.

We were not in attendance our-self, but those who were told us it was very bum. The balloon ascension in the evening was, however, very good and all spoke well of it. A stranger in our city the past week witnessing the crowds at the shows upon the streets and elsewhere would certainly think this a metropolitan place. The Salvation Army boys with their tamborines parading the streets have added to the interest and excitement. We are told they will be here all of this week.

The temperance meeting at the M. E. church last night has been reported a success. It was a layman's rather than a minister's meeting. W.

F. Hendry acted as chairman and introduced the speakers of the evening, who were Gen-McCartney and Mr. Botkin, of Hutchinson. These gentlemen, it is said, spoke clearly, earnestly and eloquently upon the present aspect of the temperance cause. A rising vote of thanks was given them before the meeting adjourned.

Conductor James Merrifleld of the Missouri Pacific will probably be the republican nominee for railroad commissioner. Deacon Merrifleld, although a resident of St. Louis, owns a large stock farm in Pettis county. He is a member of the Farmers' Alliance snd of the G. R.

St. Louis Post Dis patch. The above refers to our townsman, E. Merrifield's father. We understand he is a leader among the Farmers' Al liance and will no doubt be elected to the office for which he is a candidate.

We will say, however, that if his politi cal aspirations are not realized in Mi souri, and if he will move to the good old Sunflower stste he will carry a full vote of the Farmers' Alliance, for he would soon be a prime mover among this order in this state. From Wednesday's Daily. Mrs. Joe McGrath left yesterday morning for her home in Newton. Mrs.

Will Hare, who has been sick for some weeks, is now recovering. We believe the Salvation Army quit last night for want of good attendance, Mrs. W. F. Hendry and daughter May went to Hutchinson this afternoon Miss Grace Arnold returned yesterday from a few days visit with J.

Howard, of Kansas City, was interviewing our grain merchants today in the interest of Peavy of Kan sas City. Lem Reed met with the misfortune to bruise his foot at the shop yesterday The accident did not necessitate his lay ing off, but it is nevertheless painful. Mrs. E. J.

Arnold and mother, Mrs, J. A. Arnold left this morning for a few days visit with friends and relatives at Raymond. 1 Cnallaut, ot Kansas Uiry, rep resenting Hall Robinson, commission merchants, was in he city today interviewing our grain dealers. We hear repeatedly that it i3 hard to find a man to perform any labor, Such as working road tax, mowing yards, etc We think it a good time for laborers to move into our city.

Miss Minnie Shields, a cousin ot our townsman, S. A. Shields, died at her residence in Hutchinson yesterdav. The relatives of the deceased in this com munity have the sympathy ot all. Genial Frank Avery, of the Rock Island, returned from Palmyra, today and is visiting relatives and friends in Nickerson We are glad to see Frank back again, but are sorry to think hi hand incapacitates him from his regular duties.

Diamond Dick and company took down their free show apparatus this morning and will leave for McPherson tonight. We are of the opinion that his abilities as a "magic healer" was not appreciated to any great extent by our people. His departure will he regretted by the young people at least, as his open air entertainments afforded splendid place to while away the warm summer evenings. Council Proceedings, Council met in adjourned session with Mayor Frease in the chair. Present.

He makes the best to be found in the city Andrew Strohl has commenced hauling 1200 of corn to this city which is being disposed of to Fair, Shaak Co.

at 25c. per bushel, an increase of 10c. in the price at this period of last year. J. D.

Long and John Young today purchased a threshing machine from the Hutchinson Hardware Co. This firm has sold a number of these machines in this and surrounding counties, which bespeaks of a bountiful wheat harvest. Four employes of the salt plant were overcome by the heat Saturday and had to quit work. Their places ere soon filled, however, and no time lost. We are informed by one of the gentlemen in authority at the works that they are turning out upwards of 300 barrels of salt per day.

Last Saturday night burglars effected an entrance into the residence of R. W. Westerman and carried away about 815 in money as a result of their labor. The miscreants are evidently very well acquainted with the interior of Mr. Wes-terman's residence, as this is the third time it has been burglarized within a year and no doubt by the same parties each time.

Last Saturday afternoon it was re ported that a watch and a small sum of money had been stolen from one of our citizens and that a son of Geore Young was the guilty person. Consequently a number of boys formed is line and tied Young to a telegraph pole as a "persua der" to make him give up the stolen property. It was afterward learned that the boy was in no way connected with the affair whatever, and Mr, Young expressed his indignation by se verely chastising one of the party who took a hand in punishing his son. A wreek occurred on the Santa Fe Saturday night last with fatal results to human life. We could not get the par ticulars in regard to the exact cause of the accident, but as near as can be learned, it seems that a switch engine was standing on a side track and through some mistake the switch had not been locked.

Passenger train No. 2, which arrives here at 12:25 p. ran into the light engine and instantly killed James Otis, fireman on No. 2, and three tramps avIio were stealing a ride. The lamp on the switch target was not burning.

Had it been lit and displayed the proper danger signal the engineer could have no doubt averted the collisiod. It is said that many passengers were injured, but reports are so coniiicting that it is impossible to make an estimate with any degree of certainty. From Tuesday's Dciiy. Several of our yonug people enjoyed a picnic on the banks of the famous Cow Creek today. Mrs.

F. B. Brown and children arrived from Clearwater and will make Nickerson their home in the future. Chas. Howe moved today from his former residence to the property he recently purchased from J.

Scott are angling for the fiuny tribe this afternoon. The Methodists and Congregational- ibis win unite tneir bunday evening services during the rest of July and al so in August u. Holmes of Newton was in the city last evening and attended the K. of P. lodge in the interest of the Pythian Benevolence Association.

All parties wanting ice cream for Sunday use should not fail to leave orders at II. M. Stiefels' Saturdays. Delivered to any part of the city. Richird Jacksou, who has been visit-itiug at the home of his parents in Cottonwood Falls, returned to this city this morning and has reported for duty.

Dr. Leonard and troupe left this morning for (this state) vhere he will continue to show and dispense patent medicine to the people. Don't complain of the hot weather here. In central Iowa the thermometer ranges from 98 to 100. The people there write that it is almost too hot to live.

F. B. Brown has rented the W. B. Orton property on Peabody street where he and his family will be at home to their many friends after once settled.

Dr. G. W. Woods, of Hutchinson, was among our visitors today. The doctor is looking well and hearty and is grow ing younger each day he liyes.

Good for him. Last night during the storm Wm. Buuton's barn, in the southeastern por tion of the city, was struck by lightning and consumed by fire. No lives were lost, however. B.

Vincent, of Hutchinson, was among our visitors today. John is a candidate for re-election to the office of clerk of the district court, and will no doubt be elected. Between Saffortlsville and Elhnor, about 100 miles east of here, a severe wind storm occurred last evening which blew down 20 telegraph poles and otherwise tore up things in general. No liyes are reported lost. Those merchants who do not believe advertising during the dull season should remember that a farmer doesn't plant corn today and expect roasting ears tomorrow.

Of course business can run without advertising, so can a wagon without grease but it creaks. Later advices from the scene of the wreck at Dodge City tell us thai only one tramp was killed and that he was the brother of the fireman, James Otis. It was a queer coincidence, neither knowing the other was on the train. No one else was seriously injured. Hardware Go.
