Shaffer and father are taking in the sights of Denver this week. Jack Price was visiting friends at Wellington the first of the week. Mrs. Cyrus Frease and daughter left Thursday evening for Paris, Texas. Geo.

Reppeto has accepted a position as passenger brakeman on the Santa Fe. Audrew Mahurin, of the Colwich Courier, was in the city again this week. J. C. Crawford and wife returned home from their visit Wednesday evening.

Mrs. W. H. Frease returned from her ex tended visit to New York Tuesday eve ning. Ed Elliott, of Strong City, was renew ing Old acquaintance in this city Wed nesday Mr.

r. Hildinger. Howard Woods is now on the main line running Nos. 1 and 2 with headquarters in Nickerson. Frank Lowe has returned to Nicker son and accepted a position as switch man in the vards at this place.

Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Saunders and son Earle returned from their visit to Palmyra, Wednesday evening. Agent J.

M. Van Aiken, of Pawnee Rock, was in the city Monday attending "court" in regard to the Pawnee wreck. Genial Joe McGrath, now of Newton, was in the city this week shaking hands and renewing acquaintance with his old friends. Fred Knight is now reinstalled as day caller for the Santa Fe, vice Walter Booth, who has been transferred to Ar kansas City. Max Strauss, who has been employed as E.

Green's clothing clerk for the past few weeks, left for his home in Butler, yesterday. Mrs. W. H. Ramsey, son, daughter and mother left Thursday evening for Dubuque, and Eau Claire, for an all summer's visit.

Rev. Wm. Wilber and daughter, Miss Myrtie, returned home Thursday eye- ninar. the Rev. from Chicago and Miss Myrtie from Winfield.

Mrs. Julia Robbins returned Tuesday eyening from a visit with relatives at her old home in Minnesota. She reports having an excellent time. Capt. Hurst has again returned to the city, after an absence of several weeks, and the cattle market will again un doubtedly boom in the near future.

Davton Gorsuch and John Devitt left for Wichita yesterday morning where they will assist the Kinsley boys to wine up the earth" with the Wichita club. Chas. Brown left Thursday eve ning for Newton, where he will take charge of Conductor Simpson's run, Alex having taken a passenger train. Mrs. James Merrifield, who has been visiting at the residence of her son Walter in this city for the past six weeks, returned to her home in St.

Louis, accompanied by Mrs. W. E. Merrifield and two children, this week. Mrs.

Dr. S. M. Wirt was a visitor in the city last week renewing old acquaintances. It nas been several yeais since Mrs.

Clark'3 horse became unmanageble and turned the buggy over, throwing Mr Clark out, and the buggy tailing upon him, bruised him somewhat. He is not seriouslv hurt, however, but had quite a narrow escape The firm of North McLaughlin dis solved partnership this week, T. C.

McLaughlin retiring from the firm. The business will De conducted in the future by Albert North, whom everybody knows, consequently he needs no com' mendation from us. We wish him the best of snccess. On last Sunday was held the Seventh annual basket picnic at the Christian church in Enterprise township. We are informed that during the day be tween seven and eight hundred people were present and participated in the features of the day.

Quite a number were present from this cisy. A very pleasant birthday party was given Miss Mamie Delano last Wednes day evening in honor of her eighteenth birthday. Quito a number of her many young friends were present, ana ine A 11 evening's entertainment consisted ol music, frames, etc. She also received a goodly number elegant and useful nresents. All Dresent report a good time.

It seems they were out boating on a lake near by, on a raft, rather "Robinson Crusoe" fashion, when a black cloud arose on the horizon George's horizon at least which came near capsizing the raft. It was indeed a narrow only for George's great presence of mind and heroism all might have been drowned. Fourth of July Nickersoxi To celebrate this grand national holi day iu a befitting manner, it has been proposed that all orders, societies and organizations participate in the event. To make it a success ft requires the co operation of all the different bodies, They should therefore act at nee and elect representatives to form a general committee. The so appointed delegates are requested to meet at the city hall next Monday, the 9th at 8 o'clock p. to arrange the preliminary measures for the furtherance of this grand scheme. Let every one be present.

vs John Burns, et al Deft- Public notice is hereby given, that on Wednesday, the 25te day of June 1890, at Nickerson met in monthly seession at their orfice in the northside school building on Monday evening, June 2. Present Mrs. Hendry. JSiessrs. Beer, Davis, Sain, Bray, and Treadway.

Ab sent, Messrs Elliott and Stuart. Called to order by President bain, minutes of last meeting read, corrected and approved. L. W. Elliott having moved from the ward winch ne formerly represented, his seat was declared vacant and after an unsuccessful attempt to elect his successor, the election was deferred until next meeting.

The president appointed standing committees as follows; Finance. Davis, Stuart and Hendry. Building, Beer, Elliott and Bray. The bill of Hendry Humphrey for six dollars for printing was allowed and ordered paid. On motion the board proceeded to the election of teachers for the ensuing term with the following result.

First primary, Mrs. Chittenden and Miss Cora Blodgett; Second primary, Miss Mary Ashton and Miss. Betty Hendry; First intermediate, Miss Flora Wooden; Second intermediate, Miss Lida McGregor; Grammar grade, Mrs. Fontron The action of a previous meeting fix ing salaries was rescinded and the teacher of Grammar Grade was allowed fifty dollars per month, the balance of the corps forty dollars. On motion a committee, consisting of Mrs.

Hendry, the Clerk of the Board and the Principal, was appointed to revise the course of study and report at next meeting. On motion the hour of meeting was fiixed at 7:30 o'clock p. m. Adjourned. B.

A. Treadway, Clerk. Council Proceedings. Council met iu resular session, Mon day evening, June 2d, with Mayor Frease in the chair. Councilmen present.

Marshal reported that S. M. Shaffer had covered building with corrogated iron, and that Jarrett had torn his addi tion down. Bids of city printing were read, and H. II.

Brightman, being the lowest, was awarded the printing for the coming year. Mavor instructed ways ana means committee to consult the Nickerson bank iu regard to payment of loan held bv them. lie also instructed committee on streets to examine streets and report at next meeting. Marshal was instructed to fix up do, oound. Committee on city property reporteu some repairs needed on city nail, ana scenery in hall.

Buiiding and Loan Associations. citizens. Nickerson May 27, 1890. Regular monthly meeting of the Nickerson Citizens' Building and Loan Association. Meeting called to order by the president.

Present, Vice President Elliott, and Directors Hiett and Rag-land. Absent, Directors Sain. Riddell and Brightman. Minutes of previous meetings read and approved. The auditing committee asked for further time to complete the examination of the books.

Secretary reported no delinquents for three months. Fefs collected for April 1.70 Amount of money on hand for sale 210. L. W. Elliott bid off eight shares at C2 per cent.

Security committee reported having examined the above property and that it was ample security for the loan, and the secretary was Instructed to consummate the loan The following bills were presented and allowed L. C. Brown, for treasurer's book, $100 Jr. C. McLaughlin, for salary as secretary for May 8 33 T.

C. over deposit, 3 00 T. C. McLaughlin tendered his resignation as secretary ot the association to take effect June 1, 1890, which was ac cepted. and Albert orth was elected to fill vacancy for the balance of the-year.
