J. H. McSHERRY. Social Evolution, Extract from an address of John J. Valentine, President Wells, Fargo Express Company If, hypothetically speaking, Thomas Jeffersen, Benjamin Franklin, and Edmond Burke had been called one bundred and twenty one years ago, As a committe, before a conference of the crowned heads of Europe, or of its chief statesmen, to express their views upon the future of nations and the human race, and had, by the mouth of the gifted American statesman first named, declared with Inspired energy that the American colonies of Great Britain would rebel, and after an eight years' struggle succeed in establishing a 10- publican form of government.

taking its place in the family of nations; that its development as a union of free states would attain unexampled proportions, the aggregate population of which would, within the time indicated, grow from less than four millions to seventy-two millions, and that it would satisfactorily administer its internal affairs and maintain its authority at home and its influence and power abroad with a standing army and navy of less than forty thausand men; that it would through a uniyersal system of public schools. colleges, and universities the most extensive of any natien in the world, phenomenally promote and accel erate the general development cf intel ligence and diffusion of knowledge; and also manifest and extraordinary genius for scientific discovery, mechanical invention, and political administrationhow wild and visionary the recital would have sounded to their august auditors. But let us suppose that the same spokesman, without evincing a desire to pause, had proceeded to say that within the same period the progress of Great Britain in constitutional government and reformatory legislation, and in the general enlightment and enfranchisement of its citizens would be scarcely less marked; that the dogmas of absolutism and divine right, along with feudalism, which then prevailed throughout Europe, would be practically overthrown amid political conyulsions in 1789 and 1793, and that, ultimately, France, in the character of a Republic, would regain her place as the most highly developed example of social order in Europe; thet Germany, with her motley train of petty principalities would achieve consolidation as a constitutional monarchy; that Austro-Hungary would secure constitutional freedom; that Italy, after centuries of bondage and fractional strife, would at last be unified and take her place as a constitutional government; that the entire line of South American Republics from Mexico to Patigonia, would throw off the yoke of foreign dominion, and, assuming the right of self governwent, take their place in the brotherhood of nations. The latest fad of fashionable ladies in search of beautiful complexions is mud--plain, dirty, sticky mud. The idea is by no means now, but it is the first time that society has accepted it as a skin beautifier. Swamp mud, or mud from th3 Led of a stream, is the best. The skin should be thoroughly cleansed and dried until it feels warm and the perspiration has started. Then apply the mud thickly, taking care to keep it from the eyes.

It is especially necessary that care be taken to cover all portions of the skin alike, as the smallest patch of uncovered skin is likely to stand out with disagreeable plainness the next morning. The feeling of the mud on the face is not as unpleasant as one might at first suppose. It feels much as a coating of vaseline or cold cream would, and Its beneficial results are much greater. M. T.
