Blue Mound indulges in boss ra ces and everyone goes. Topeka is to have more electric lights. They are needed. Blue Mound has a urass bnit and the citizens are weary of life. Garden City is pleased wilh the bright outlook for the future.

With three physicians in jail, Emporia is pretty well thank you. Concordia will give a useless park for a usefull packing house. The Paola Times comes out without a bustle this week, and its dress doesn't fit. A man at Topeka put in a claim to the council for three dollars because he had the smallpox. Two men at Ottawa fell dead on the streets after their club had lost a ball game.

Wichita is coming to the front again with a suicide, a disappearance and a disgraceful dance. The irrepressible Sam Woods has been arrested, but no one can take out an injunction on his mouth. The invisible reporter of th Gar-nett Plain Dealer denies that there are anv "soiled doves" in that city. Atchison will never be happy until she has a meat inspector. It might be well to import an inspector, as they do their meat.

An unknown man, about 35 yrs. old, shot himself through the temple Sunday night at Topeka. Over 300 was found on his person. Four of the eight companies of militia have returned to their homes from Stephens county. All is now quiet at Uugoton aud Woodsdale.

The Kansas Democrat wants the new coined word driven out of the papers of the state. The word was coined before the birth of the Democrat. Newton is sharper that some of her neighbors and has commenc ed the manufacture of razors, the first ever manufactured west of the Missouri river. Kansa3 has an eye on the India wheat crop. She is not unchari table in the least, but the report ed failure of the crop there has drawn no tears from Kansas eyes.

The editor of the St Mary's Ga zette thinks that the cause of so many Sunstrokes in this city was absorbing too much corn juice. As most of the fatality was among Kansans, the idea is worthy of study. Wichita Eagle: "Clubs arc I trumps in this campaign, and the republican party holds a straight flash of that suit; it is bound to win this came. Cold decks don'f cro this vear." Are the Wichita clubs included in this dealf A society has been formed at Centerville, Linn county to sup press the bustle, because it is fic titious and not true to nature. This may be true but like many other pleasing fictions, it is based on fact, and stern fact at that.

Hiawatha Democrat: 'There is a man operating a soda fountain in this city who kisses his fair customers (if no one is arounc). His trade has increased so rapid ly lately, that against his own will he has been compelled to to im port a new kisser." Contributors to this column will please write their items on shin gles and send them by freight. In the make-up of a daily paper promptness in carrying and deliv- eting new 8 is the most important Uem. If, sent by mail, in conse quence, the best items lose their value. The great "Comedy Sketch Club' which was to have been here on Friday evening last, failed to materialize. We learn that the Hanlen and Sims case is now under headway, as sheriff Glasscock served the papers Monday. A.

Sipes was chosen as chairman of the Democratic Central Committee at their meeting in St. John Saturday. Miss Amy Granger returned from Sterling last Friday. She has been having a good time with her old friends. Misses Milton and Fidler, sister and cousin of Chas.

Milton returned to their home in Kentucky yesterday morning. George Wittmer cwne in Monday evening, faom his trip to Rose Valley, with live girls and a muchly broken bug- Leonard Hoopes was in town last week, he has been sick in Hutchison for about a month and consequently looks bad. Frank Anderson, (Fatty) who has been staying wilh Jos. Clyne, started for his old home in Louisville, yes terday morning. Mart Kooken has contracted to work out the road tax for the A.

T. S. F. railroad through Stafford county, and will commence work to-day. Mart is becoming quite a contractor.

T. O. Co. have traded their stock at Nickerson. Commencing about September 1st, A.

D. Cronk will take the position as pub lisher of the Democrat. "Al" is a good workman and we consider ourselves fortunate in securing him. Harry McQuade's line cottage, at the corner of Union and Camden streets, is being pushed to completion as rapid ly as possible. When finished it will be one of the neatest residence houses in the city.

We have heard many arguing this week about the different kinds of soil and the different modes of cultivation and we have come to the conclusion that it takes a little rain at intervals to raise a crop of corn. Our Bro. Flemming, it seems owed $120 on the team he sold Ferris Spur gen besides $21 feed bill at the livery stable in Arlington, and the people of Arlington are on the lookout for preach ers as this one left many unpaid bills. A. D.

Crbnk has severed his cnnee tion with the Republican, and we un derstand that Art will try bis hand at being foreman of a printing office. Mr, Cronk is a good printer, and we think that Bro. Akers will miss bun more than he anticipates. Robt. Clinkscales and James Goin passed through town Tuesday on their way to the Salt Marsh to see after their cattle.

Mr. Clinkscales has something over a hnndred head of mixed cattle and Mr. Goin has 100 head of yearling steers in herd on the marsh, The old Boehme building is being thorougoly repaired to receive the fixtures for the new Frank Cox bank, which will be opened for business about Sept. 12th. Mr.

Crops are looking very well considering the dry weather. Mr. Titus is having his house and barn painted; Mr. Springer is doing the work. Anyone wanting work done in that line should call on him.

Mr. James Xelson who has been visi-his brother has returned home, and is gaining strength very fast. To the man that wilfully and maliciously took from off the vine, the old maid's large Avatermelon, that we expect she was keeping for a special purpose, had better bring it back, for there is woe passed on them that take things not belonging to them. We (wife and I) attended the grove meeting Taylor's grove, in Union township held by Bros. Bond and Stout, a good congregation night and day.

Gospel was set forth in its fullness, and and we believe there were seed sown that will grow and bring forth fruit to the glory of God. The Flemming Scandal Many of our readers will be greatly surprised to learn of the downfall of II. E. Flemming at one time minister for the M. E.

church of Stafford. Brother Flemming it seems had become infatua ted with a Mrs. Frioreor living six miles west of Arlington. Last week Flemming was in Stafford shaking hands wilh his old acquaintainces and no one supposed anything was wrong. While here he sold a team of horses, buggy and harness to Mr.

Ferri3 for eighty dollars and Ferris was to furnish him a team and buggy to drive home; he left here about 1 o'clock returning as they supposed, to his home in Arlington, the next heard of him was through a livery man at Sylvia, who informed Mr. Ferris of his team. It seems on leaving Stafford he drove to, or near the place of the man Frioreor and taking his lady love made all speed for Sylvia on the A. T. S.

F. road; before getting there, he had broken the double-tree of the bug gy and whipped the horses shamefully, and when in one and one-half miles of ivivia aoanaonea tne team mat couiu 1 a a A. The couple remained behind the livery barn until about 11 o'clock when the west bound express came they boarded for parts in, which unknown.

From all appearances they must have feared pursuit and drove the horses in a frightful manner, it being one of the best teams in the barn and the distance drove about 7o miles covered in so short a time. The team is unfit for use for many days. The lady leaves a home in every sense of the word, a husband and one child, a girl ten or twelve years old. Flem ming leaves a wife and five children in Arlington in destitute circumstances. STAFFORD Sr DEMOCRAT, htningand ind-storms.

Williams, just east of this city, has been accounted for, after much discussion by chemists and others. Some twenty years ago the farm was owned by F. M. Fay, who had an extensive orchard. The apple crop was large, and he made several hundred ed barrels of cider, to be converted into vinegar.

While the fluid was fermenting, about one hundred barrels burst and their con tents where lost. The cider sank into the ground until it reached an impervious strata of clay, where it lay until the well was dug on the same spot. Scientific American.
