There are crimes all the yiar round, but riots are more riotous, murders are more murderous and scandals more scandalous during July and August than any other of the twelve. Angry passions seem to rise with the mercury, and to simmer and explode before the mercury falls. The scandal season is now at its height, and the harvest is a good average one, both as regards the crop grown for home consumption and otherwise. Evety community has its allotment of half-open scandalous secrets known to the initiated. There are always half, highly held faces that might change color if they only knew that somebodj' else knew what they think known outy to themselves.

But these things are too common to cause con- vultioii. A clergyman is-whirk-d into the vortex or a Society treasurer who ab-scounds with other peoples funds, causes a ripple in the mid summer monotony, and the chronicles of the misdeeds of the fashionably wicked alona suflicc to cause a proper pleasure to the devourer of scandal. We see a disposition upon the part of some of our neighboring county papers to urge the limit required by law to live on a homestead before being allowed to prove up. to one year. We fear they are loosing sight of the public good, to be realized by shortening the time of proing np, in their disposition to befriend the iudhiduals who may need assistance.

It has not been the policy of the Government simply to give land to those who ask it, as many would secure it jis a matter of speculation, but to assist those who have no permanent homes in securing one. There arc thousands of WONDERFUL DISCOVERY Coroner, means and a prominent citizen of Jewell county and we are flattered with the prospects of securing him as one of our citizens. Dr. Kneeland has made a success of raising a part of a crop of vegetables this j'ear, in his experimental garden which includes some live acres of ground. He is made a business of securing seeds of every kind possible and testing their adaptability to this climate and soil.

Had we received an ample amount of rain his garden would have been valuable to the county, in establishing the pro Jueing nature of our soil. Mr. Haskell nst returned from up oh the t. M. It.

in Neb. He says the prospects are verv favorable for work for all who desire it all winter. They pay 4. per day to man and team and $1.73 to 8hovelers. Corn 53 cents per bushel.

II. can give you any information you may de.sire in regard to the general management of the work. Died: Vugust 20th, 18S1, at Arkona, Mrs. Caroline wife of James Ilammitt, in her forty second year. The corpse was brought to Kenneth on Saturday, lor burial.
