A report was published in a Salina paper last week to the effect that Ed Soldner had been expelled from the Kansas Christian college because he had assisted the High school seniors in their entertainment at the opera house the previous Friday and Saturday evenings. We have interviewed Professor Stoner in regard to the He says the report in the Salina paper is altogether wrong. His version is to the th effect that young Solclner is a student of considerable ability either at his athletic work or at college work, but that he had been giving so much of his time to the athletic sports that he was neglecting the regular work at the college. Professor Stoner informed him that he must either give up the sports and comply with the requirements of the prescribed course or quit the institution, and he chose the latter alternative. His nomination at Hill City in 1890 was actually made in a secret session of the al-' liance lodge. The farmers gathered there as representatives of the various lodges of the Sixth Congressional District. They were not selected in the ordinary manner of elocting delegates from the various counties. When they reached Hill City they held their meeting behind locked doors, and every delegate was compelled to give the alliance pass-word before he was admitted.

Several Kansas women participated as delegates in this unique political gathering. It was the first time the women were permitted a vote in the nomination of a Kansas congressman, although the populists admitted them Tuesday, February 15, disposing of How much then is a man better have been a helpful part of our school system in Kansas for many years. his entire personal property. 14. 3 3 in 3 a More Dinner Sets Free. The republicans made their principal fight against Baker on the ground tnat he was the candidate of a secret order. They construed it as an assault upon the constitution and declared that it was antagonistic to free government. But nothing could turn the overwhelming tide of the alliance sentiment.

Baker was elected by ten thousand majority. The alliance forces realized the mistake tbey made, however, in nominating their candidate in secret meetings, and the other nominations that year were made by delegate conventions. While the republicans elected their state ticket that year, thanks to the fact that a democratic state ticket was in the field headed by ex-Governor Charles Robinson, the alliance elected to congross, in addition to Baker in the Simpson in the Seventh district, John Davis in the Fifth, John G. Otis in the Fourth, and Ben Clover in the Third. The republicans elected only Case Brod-erick in the First district and E.

H. Funston in the Second. Mr, Baker held the distinction of being the first populist congressman ever elected. In all the other districts in Kansas the candidates were elected by the "fusionists," and they were called "fusion," candidates. William Baker was known as the avowed alliance nominee, and he was opposed by the "regulars" of both the democratic and republican parties.
