WILSON, Cashier. Ruelia. The Joppa Literary Society closed last Wednesday night after a season of successful entertainments. Mr. Monroe and family moved to Crystal Springs last week where they will reside for seme time or till "Oklahoma" opens.

Last year farmers commenced work and put in crops, not because there was any assurance from the weather or the condition of the ground, but because it was the time ot the year and they had nothing else to do. Thi3 spring the condition of the ground and weather is about all that could be desired, and the farmers are improving their time to the best advantage. The average western man may get a little discouraged when the drouth and chinch bugs destroy his summer's crops, but when the time comes for planting you find him at work as though there never had been a failure of crops. Thomas and Isaac Shafer are working late and early on the Peter Helbertfarm plowing for corn and oats. Mr.

Clark, from Kingman county, will move on the Gunckel farm in time for spring work. He contemplates planting ninety acres of corn and 40 acres ot oats. Last week while the section men were at Kiowa, some one took advantage of their absence to have a fine time. Putting the dump car on the track, they would push it to the top of the grade, two miles east of town, and then ride back. After a couple of hours of sport they pushed the car to the cut east of the depot, then set it off the track and left it.

The boss would like to form their acquaintance for about fifteen minutes. Markham, who finished husking corn a few weeks ago, says he had the stalks containing ears all flagged before husking to save trouble and time hunting them up." However, during the oggy days he experienced some difficulty in finding the flags and would have got lost several times had it not been for a wire fence partly enclosing the field. The nimrods of this yicinity have been enjoying the sport of shooting geese and duck. Ben Shannon got five geese out of one flock. D.

F. Long haying broken one of the hammers of his gun, put in a double charge, or, as he said, 'both loads in one barrel," and sallied forth against a flock of nine ducks; killed one, frightened four to death, run down two, one fell after flying a half mile and could not be' found, and one got away; sex unknown. The "old settlers" will hold their annual meeting at the Pratt-Markham school house. Everybody prepare to come out and have a good time. Crosby.

A Boy, Fooling With a Gun, Kills One and Wounds Another Companion. Special to the Sentinel. Attica, Kansas, March 9th. A terrible accident occurred some four miles south of here yesterday which resulted in the death, ot Charley Sleppy and probably the fatal wounding of his brother; George. While out hunting Dell Mclntyrecame upon George and Charley Sleppy and Charles Parkhurst.

Mcln tyre laid down his gun and was talking the boys when Parkhurst, a lad of twelve, picked up the gun and pointed it at Mclntyre, who made him put it down; then he aimed it at the little Sleppy boys, when it went. off. The load cut out one side of George's neck and lodged in Charley's breast, killing him instantly. George is still alive, but is in a very critical condition. HlS'PIe-us" Dream.

DEDICATED TO E. P. A. BY H. And now o'er France the glorious orb of day Resplendent shone, and slow descending In the west, Cast one long lingering ray of golden light Harple-winged forth, and sank into the Dight.

Belted and spurred a lilied knight came forth Of Franco the destroyer he, of pie. Lightly he forward pressed to where the sands of ocean Did ceaseless creep with every changing tide. There search he made for one bright shining ocean Shell, His fortune's mascot, yet still a traitor's brand Ere long 'twas found, and France a hero mourns. Trace we his course to where ho reigns supreme. Rich in the adulation of fondling mether's hearts And now 'tis o'er his brief authority is waned.

In place of pomp and pie and fondling hearts Threads he the sad uneven tenor of his way, Of mother's cursed, of bitter enmity a black, ened mark. Read well these lines and all this riddle solve. This is a new department of Mr. Fox's but anyone aiding in the improvement of the stock ot this country deserves as much credit as the traditional man who made "two blades of grass where but one grew before." Attention, Old Soldiers. There will be meeting of the old soldiers held on the evening of March 19th, at 7 o'clock, at Campbell's Hall, to consider the various pension bills now before congress.

The Woman's Relief Corps, in conjunction with the G. A. R. will have a social at Campbell's Hall, Thursday evening March 15th.

Don't forget the date, but be on hand, By order ot committee. Emperor William Not Dead. At 2 o'clock this morning the emperor was sleeping soundly and there seemed to be some improvement in his condition.

The supposed death was a fainting fit. His miifd is clear and the doctors are hopeful. We have just received a new piece of music, called "Silver Bell Waltz" by the popular composer, Charley Baker, which we can recommend to' our readers as very good, it not being too difficult and attthe same time very showy. It can be played on the piano or organ, and will be sent at the special price of only' 11 2c. stamps.

If the city marshal would pull a few parties for driving across the sidewalks" in front.of vacant lots the city would be saved considerable expense and the public much annoyance. The walk south of the Presbyterian church has been badly damaged recently in this way.

He succeeded in having two of the men arrested in that city and the other in Omaha, but the money had not been recovered ud to yesterday. As passed the house of Sanford Hurst, in the south-eastern part of the city we noticed a large pile of -wood which he cut and hauled off of his farm four miles east of Harper.

A Great Power. More than thirty-two thousand copies of Webster's Unabridged Dictionary have been placed in the Public Schools of the United States. Who can tell what a great power for intellectual stimulus and development to the young mind the constant use of and reference to that number of the great work will be? If in these schools there is an average of fifty scholars in each, it would bring more than a million and a half of scholars under its cjaily influence. What an effect this must have in coming years ol the power of theught and language thus developed. Well and truly has Noah Webster been called The Schoolmaster or the Republic.

With our superior soil there need never be any fears of an entire corn failure where the crop is properly cultivated.

Our lady readers can hardly fail to have their attention called this week to the latest combination of improvements in that most useful of all domestic implements, the "sewing machine." As we understand it, a machine for family use should meet first of all these requirements: It should be simple in its mechanism; it should run easy; it should do a wide range of work; it should be as nearly noiseless as possible; it should be light, handsome, durable, and as cheap as is consistent with excellence throughout. These conditions, the "Light-Running Hew Home" certainly meets. It has also several very important and useful attachments and "notions" of its own, which go far to make good its claims to popular favor. The "New Home" specially recommends itself to purchasers on account of its superior mechanical construction, ease of management and reasonable price. Over half a million have been sold in the last three years, all of which are giving universal satisfaction.
