Our county commissioners had some much needed work done on the county road between here and Sedan. F. W. Ballard of Hillsdale, was in our vicinity Sunday. Misses Madge and Flossie Meach-am visited Sunday with Blanch and Grace Morton.

Ralph Howell made a business trip to Peru last Tuesday. The boys around are plowing their oats ground and getting ready for their spring crop. W. A. Worley has built a nice milk shed he can now strip old Lil without that north wind whistling through his whiskers.

Mrs. Susan Horn visited in Sedan Friday and reports the roads the worst she ever saw. Go again, see how nice they are fixed now. There was a pie supper at Harper Creek school house last Friday night. James Short made a trip to Sedan Monday.

Mrs. Wm. Conroy entertained at Former expositions have shown wild men and women from the Antipodes, but it has remained for the San Diego Exposition to find a whole nation of wild men within the borders of the United States, a whole vast erea where nothing has progressed since before the invasion of Mexico by Cortez in 1517. This area is in northeastern Arizona, and the Santa Fe Railway will cover ten acres of ground at the Exposition with as close a copy of this country as is possible to produce. This locality is known as the Painted Desert.

Its a land where no white man has dared attempt agriculture or mining, where there is nothing but the Indian, his ancient civilization un-altered, living in six story houses of 100 rooms without an outside door, doing the same things in the same way his forefathers did for centuries before white men came to America. Kattie Bartimus, who are in the hospital there. Mrs. Annie Cunningham has rented her farm one mile south of town to Irwin Orendorf, and is moving to her farm north of Sedan. Mrs. Cunningham expects to move back to Peru in September perhaps sooner.

Teachers Association. The Southeastern Kansas Teachers' Association are planning to make the annual meeting this year at Fort Scott surpass in attendance, interest and ethusiasm any educational meeting ever held in Southeastern Kansas. The Association opens Thursday, Feb. 5th and closes Friday evening Feb. 6th.

A Near Fire. On last Wednesday night, J. W. Marlow and wife, after returning from the Red Men's entertainment, and having no fire the rooms were cold. Starting a fire in the range flat-irons were heated and put in the bed.

They were aroused from sleep by being nearly suffocated by smoke. The bedding was smouldering, caused by the over heated irons. Thinking they had put it all out they again retired, to only be aroused the second time by the blankets bein on fire. A spark had been overlooked the first time. Wm.
