"The fact of the matter is," said he this morning, "that there was never a time in the state when there were such great differences between adjoining wheat fields. In the Solomon valley, for instance, I found fields which would make fifty bushels to the acre, while adjoining them would be other fields which would not pay for the harvest. The statement that the wheat yield will reach sixty million bushels is erroneous. The area will reach three million acres, and as near as can be estimated at present there will be three-fourths of a crop, or fifteen ELGIN, KANSAS Also Tinware, Iron, Nails, Cutlery, Etc. -L.

The forthcoming crop report will give the assessors' figures on the wheat acreage and the estimated yield per acre. Secretary Mohler does not expect an especially large yield from the Northwest. POLSON. PROPRIETOR OF Cedar Vale Star: Cattle owners in Center and Lafayette townships are becoming alarmed over the presence of Texas ticks on the range where Texas fever got in its work last year. J. J. Adams reports them on his range, Thos.

Turner has cattle already infested with them and similar rumors, not, however, well authrenticated, add to the serious feature of the case. Hon. Keenan Hurst, of the state sanitary board was in Sedan this week and in answer to questions gave as his opinion that the tick theory as a cause of the disease is certainly entitled to consideration, in fact he believes the ticks will produce the disease, and cited the experiments of the department of agriculture. These experiments were made on suggestions from himself and colleagues from observations made in this county last year, and the results clearly prove Mr. Hurst's position.

He expresses much interest in the matter and will make investigations if the rumor of the presence of the ticks in numbers be substantiated. The conclusions reached by the experiments refered to are not so exact as to indicate the precise manner in which the ticks cause the disease, but the most acceptable theory is that the adult ticks drop off, infect the pastures with germs which are introduced into cattle with the food they eat and fever results, as it also does from the presence of ticks upon the animal.
