For several days the parents had been preparing for the day and the result was that when the day arrived there was an abundance of good things taken and sent to the grounds to satisfy" the appetites of all present. Early in the day teams began taking the picnicers to R.

S. Sullivan's grove, about one and a half mile southwest of town, where there had been tables, benches, swings, previously erected for the accommodation and amusement of all. Unfortunately the wind rose toward noon and rendered the day disagreeable for out door sports, yet the little ones seemed to enjoy the day. The little folks are always more philosophical than grown people and make the most of a day set apart for enjoyment and take it for granted that the disagreeable must be intermixed with their joys. The teachers did their full share in making hours as pleasant as possible for their scholars and also donated liberally in the way of good things.

Our livery men, J. A. Milier, Pratt Rather and Mr. Turner, of the Blue front stables, should be remembered for their kindness in running their teams to and from the grove. There were no exercises at the ground other than a general enjoyment of the day as far as possible.

The picnic was a fitting conclusion of the term of school, and the efforts of the teachers to show to their late pupils that jthey had not only their mental improvement at heart, but also their enjoyment, will long be remembered by their scholars. There was a large number at the grounds and all speak in the highest praise of the picnic. W. J. RATHER. Harper Notes. The hose cart and apparatus for the fire company arrived to-day, and are being inspected by a large crowd on the street.

No more fires now. The Harper base ball club goes out to Hillsdale to-day to play the champion of the Grove and Hillsdale nines. The Harper public schools close next Friday. The school year has been very prosperous under the excellent supervision of Prof. Gridley.

A number have asked me questions concerning the Harper Normal College. It furnishes thorough instruction in any course you wish to take. Among its apparatus for the next term is a complete set of models in perspective drawing, a costly manikin for physiology, a regular surveyor's transit, a fine chemical binocular microscope and mounting apparatus, air pump, Counters and desks are being prepared for practical business transactions. Board and furnished rooms are 2.50 respectively per week. The enrollment has reached 175.

Five joined yesterday to take the course in short hand. Kingman, Sumner, Barber, Clark, Marion and Douglas counties are represented. The last term commencing June 14, will be teachers' review as well as the regular work. C. B.

An attempt was made at the last session of the city council to pass an ordinance to prohibit gambling and to fix a fine, but failed. Two of the members wished to fix the fine at not less than $20 and not more than $100 for each offence. This seemed to be exorbitant to two of the members, hence the defeat. S.

W. Sager, who is engaged in the breeding of Hereford cattle and located on a ranch some nine miles northeast of Attica, gave us a call yesterday. He gave us a pressing invitation to visit his place, which we shall do in a short time and report what we witness. Mr.Sager is a very pleasant, intelligent gentleman and full of energy. E.

H. Beal has just returned from a business trip to the east and south lines of the county and says he never saw better wheat in Kansas than that he passed by yesterday. A strip over 8 miles in width, running north and south along the east line and extending entirely across the county, he says, stands thick and even upon the ground and is lilling nicely. L. Chief. One of our best citizens made a break the other day that has made him a lifelong enemy. He is a pleasant gentleman with a kind, cheering word for everyone and the other morning as he was passing his neighbor's house and saw his neighbor's wife hoeing in the garden he thought he would throw out a pleasant remark and said: "Why, you'er ahoer from hoersville, ain't ycu!"
