DEMOCRATIC DEPARTMENT. By O.S. COFFIN. County Correspondence. EAST CENTER.

iiorn to Mr. and Mrs. Levi Garver, Hoc. 27,1 Wi, tlno boy. Mrs.

Noah lielmulh has been on tho sick list for few days but wo are glad to notice that slio is ublo to 1)0 up and around. Miss Irene Leech, from Stafford is visiting with her cousins in West Lincoln. Tliero was a dance at Whltsons' on New Years eve. Dixon Brothers furnished tho music, und it was good The jBiggest Little Thing couple. The occusion was well pro-pared for and all had a very enjoyablo time.

A well prepared and handsomely spread table was an Important factor in the evening's work. A regular feast was partaken of by those present. Also many beautiful and valued gifts which wero suitable for tho occasion wore bestowed. We extend to them our hearty congratulations and wish them all Joy, peace andhapplness that tho world affords all along through life. Mr.

Stot Tliarp of Iiawley, Oklahoma, was a visitor at Mr. Hayes' last Wednesday. A new man for Santa Fo ntjent at Castleton. Mr. Harrison, the regular agent is visiting his parents in Missouri.

Castleton. vy measured by the amount of nutritive value it contains, is the fresh soda cracker. Many people think a cracker an insignificant and easy thing to make yet no one ever succeeded in reaching perfection until Uneeda Biscuit were introduced. To maintain the quality of Uneeda Ciscuti requires the best of everything wheat, flour, baker, and bakery. Uneeda Biscuit furnishes every element necessary to bodily vigor; and, above all, they are fresh and clean.

This is due to the In-er-seal Package the package with red and white seal which protects 1 1 1 .1 .1 the air, moisture, oust, ana mention. The cuio important question of today nffoctini? tho economy of home and liresido Is tho exhorbitant price of fuel and meet.

The subject is aliko important to the republican, tho democrat and tho socialist. There Is as much coal in tho country as there ever was and more coal oil but it takes more money to a bushel of the one or a gallon of the oilier than slnco tho memory of man runeth not to tho contrary. Tho reason for this outrage on tho rights of tho people is plain to the understanding of the average man and a remedy would bo found in any country except our own. That tho price of coal to tho consumer is lixed by a trust will not bo disputed. That the monopoly Is encouraged by the protective tariff policy of tho republican party and tho tai ft of a republican congress cannot be successfully contradicted.

Every republican stump speaker in the last campaign and tho republlcan'press denied that there was any protection to coal --lint nnMivnMfo rut it. nnno i I h'ir. tho rnnnhniMinc i Mhiritn nn Is clearly in evidence now tho election over and the holidays past. On the reassembling of congress on the Oth instant, Mr. Culberson of tho senate introduced a resolution to suspend the operation of tho tariff on anthracite coal for ninety days.

Mr. Lodge spoke in favor of tho resolution urging the importance of the measure to relieve the poor of the eastern states from the monopoly and high price of coal. lUifc it was all talk, the resolution was postponed indefinitely. Another Illustration of the influence of trusts on republican so-called statemen at the nation's capital. Hut this was not all.

Mr. Jones of Arkansas introduced a resolution reciting charges made by Mr. Hirst that there was an Illegal combination among certain railroads to control the shipment of anthracite coal and called on the attorney general for the evidence which it was alledged had been sceure by him. This was followed by a lively debate in which the republican senators claimed that it was an insult to the attorney general. He this as it may the attorney general has failed from neglect or incompetency to enforce tho law against trusts and there are more trusts today doing business without molestation than ever before.

The resolution offered by Mr. Culbreson is a confession by the republican senate that there is a duty on anthracite joal of (37 cents on the ton. A confession too, that the duty protects the trust in the monoply and enables them to charge home consumers more than they would have to pay were it not for the protection afforded them by the so-called republican statesmen. The meat trust is another monopoly operating under like conditions. The ill advised republican partisan can learn a little common sense every time he buys coal or meat if he is not lost to every sense of duty, responsibility and obligation due to home and fireside.

Could anything be more suggestive or appropriate than the meeting and organization of the Kansas legislature on a bad luck day, the tilth. To make the thing complete they should elect the speaker on the 13th and adjourn to meet on Friday and complete tho organization. Superstition is not characteristic of the average Kansan but shame and disgust is apparent with the people in every part of the state. From the lesson learned in observing the disgraceful scramble in the senatorial fight at Topeka the past few months, the people must be convinced by this time that they can expect nothing from a party that subordinates the interests and just rights of the people to a selfish scarnible for the spoils of office. The legitimate business interests of the people will not be advanced by the success of either faction of the republican party.

The situation can be illustrated by the story of the stranger asking the farmer as to which of the two roads was the best. He replied by saying, "take either road and before you have gone a mile you will wish you had taken the other." Taxation, improved public highways, school funds, interstate commerce have not been mentioned. The question is, and has been, which of tho great corporations doing business in Kansas shall own the United States senator and have his influence in the legislation at Washington in their interest, and the distribution of the patronage. The words of tho great York millionaire will bo remembered and quoted: "The people be damned." "Some time ago my daughter caught a severe cold. Sho complained of pains In her chest and had a bad cough. I gave her Chamberlain's Cough Remedy according to directions and in two days she was woll and able to go to school. I have used this remedy In my family for the past seven years and have never known it to fail," says James Pren-dergast, merchant, Annato Hay, Jamaica, West India, Islands. The pains in the chest indicated an approaching attack of pneumonia, which In this Instance was undoubtedly warded off by Chamberlain's Cough Remedy.

Henry Youtsey today continued his testimony before tho gand Jury and there is more excitement over the case than on Saturday. It Is stated that he is making a full confession, not only of his part, but also telling all he knows about what others In the allegedo onspiracy, three years ago, to assassinate Governor Goebelj did. It is currently reported that new evidence has not only been secured on those already indicted, but also such as to invoke others not before mentioned in the celebrated case. Antagonism Eiiutadered Eetween Frussiaaa -tad Hardly a day, passes but tho newspapers contain striking evidence of the antagonistic spirit which is being engendered between tho Pole3 and the Prussians. Last Week it came to the ears of the publishers of a Polish paper circulating in We3tnhalia one of their compositors was about to marry a German girl. They considered that thi3 stamped hhn as a traitor to Poland, and although he had served then faithfully for many years they dismissed him on the spot. A large number of Poles work in the Westphalia coal mines, and in order to further the amalgamation of the races the authorities have issued regulations to the effect that no person shall be employed underground who is not proficient in the German language. The Poles obstinately refuse to know a word of German when they happen to be called up to make statements in public A few days afro a Polish miner had to give evidence in a Westphalia polioe court.

He was, of course, as Innocent as a newly-borne babe of any knowledge of German until the magistrate threatened to report the case to his employers, who would have been compelled to dismiss him. Thereupon tne German came back, and he replied fluently to all the Questions put to him. His wife had been present during the hearing of tho case, and wa3 waiting for him in the passage just outside the court room door. As soon as he appeared she bitterly reproached him for having given way, and to render her arguments more forcible, soundly boxed his ears. She then kicked him with such vigor that ho had to race down the corridor Into the street to escape the attentions of his "patriotic" better half.
