Geo. Black and family left for Sterling last Monday where they will make a prolonged stay, Mr. E. Carlos Meyer appears jubilant over the arrival of a nine-pound boy at his home on Thursday; August 30th. Mr.

J. W. Preston is on the sick list, being a victim of the malarial fever which infests this neighborhood at present. Master Otto Grubb has been confined to bed with malarial fever during the past several days, but is slowly recovering. Many residents of this vicinity are taking advantage of the reduced rates to the soldiers' reunion at Columbus, Ohio, to visit relatives in that state.

With a new dry goods store and a new drug store, to be opened here in the near future, Burdett will once more present a business-like appearance. The sad intelligence comes to us that Mr. Geo. Barber, county clerk of Ness county, died very suddenly at Ness City last Tuesday evening of apoplexy. Mr.

and Mrs. W. H. Stambaugh left for a short visit among friends in Ashland, Ohio, this morning. They will visit Columbus and other cities in the Buckeye state before returning.

The Pawnee county democracy will meet in convention at Larned, Saturday, September 15th, to nominate candidates for the various county offices. As usual, a large attendance and an enthusiastic meeting are anticipated. The political meeting held at the school house last Saturday evening under the auspices of the union labor party proved to be quite successful. Mr. W.

coming to Burdett on horseback, Miss Van Meter's horse become frightened at some object by the roadside, and jumping suddenly to one side, threw her violently to the ground. She was taken to her home in Burdett as quickly as possible, and has since been seriously ill, being unconscious part of the time. We are pleased to note, however, that at last reports she was much better. Her many friends hope to see her around again in a few days. W.
