The County High School and City Schools Commenced Monday-High School Enrollment, The Sheridan county high school opened Monday morning with an attendance of 30. The city schools opened at the same time. The high school teachers are Prof.

R. G. Mueller, the principal, and Miss Hazel bmith. Miss Bertha Peterson, the principal of the city schools, also does some high school work. The other teachers in the city schools are Miss Mitchell, Miss Millar and Miss Florence Baker, who have charge of the first second intermediate and primary departments, respectively.

Probate Judge J. H. Brown and wife attended the soldiers' reunion at Oberlin last week. The recent cold weather is attributed by our local scientists to the eclipse of the sun last week. W.

C. Haines, of Valley township, had a load of watermelons on the market in Hoxie Monday. Miss Edith Falls, Miss Courtney, Ed Monteith and Harry Phillips spent Sunday in the country. John McCoy has sold his house to Mrs. J-.

w. j. Robertson's barn burns The. Origin of the Fire a Mystery. W.

J. Robertson's barn, in the north part of town, caught fire and was burned to the ground at about 10 o'clock Sunday morning. Mr. Robertson had just gone out into the country, and his wife was at alone when the fire occurred. No one had been in the barn for an hour before the fire started, and its origin is a mystery to all, The prompt action of bystanders prevented the fire from spreading.

Elder See was present and added some interesting, thoughts on the subject, "The Church and the Laboring Class." Come next Sunday night to the Presbyterian church and we will hold a union Gospel temperance rally. Two phases of the subject will be considered the effect of intemperance on the human system and its immoral influence. Regular serv'ces in the morning.

encampment in Denver this week. Teachers will be in demand this year. There are about 20 more schools in the county than there are teachers. The Sheridan county normal institute closed Thursday. Friday and Saturday were devoted to a teacher's examination, Miss Edna Lupton left Monday morning for Lawrence, where she will attend the University of Kansas during the coming term.

R. R. Davis sold a part of his farm in Bow Creek township last week at a profitable price and will soon make Hoxie his home. The lecture which was to have been delivered Monday evening was postponed, the lecturer not having been able to be present. W.

S. Quisenberry and Sam Herron were among the Hoxie people who attended the Norton county fair at Norton last week. Elias Ritter, of Selden, left for Hays Sunday to attend the State Normal School there the coming term. He went by way of Grain-field. The Colby football team will be here Saturday, Sept.

17, to play the Hoxie team. Colby has a strong team which has not been defeated for three years. Hoxie needs some good rooming houses badly. Many more students would attend high school this winter if they were able to get the necessary accommodations. Mrs.

Force will live on the Quis enberry ranch east ot town this winter. Her household goods were taken there Monday. Cnct Force will manage the ranch during the winter. Mrs. M.

I. Woods, of Valley township, went to Selden Saturday by way of Her father, J. M. Swalley, joined her at Selden and they went to Denver to attend the G. A.
