Made under United States Veterinary License. ANTI HOG CHOLERA SERUM (Continued from Juno 5th) From this place we went to the town of Taft, which is really the headquarters of the mechanical part of the ranch. Taft is about the center of the ranch, and is a town of several hundred inhabitants, at this place are located the water and electric light and power plants, which furnish water power and light to the various parts of the ranch, except to the pastures, where water is supplied by wind-mills, there being something like one hundred in operation, following last summer'? severe storm which played havoc all along the coast (eighty of these mills were wrecked or rather demolished) had to be rebuilt. The towers of these mills are of wood as will outwear the metal on account of the salt air, in fact a wire fence altho galvanized is not expected to last over three or four years.

They say that money will even rust and cor-odo in your pocket near the coast, but we were not bothered in this matter. The ranch maintains a packing house and a creamery, at Taft, both of which wo visited and were shown thru by the respective managers. Mr. Weil seems to be acquainted with everybody in Southern Texas, and to him is due credit for our admittance and entertainment at these very interesting places, though the managers seemed pleased to entertain us. We found the packing houses well stocked with beef, pork and mutton, as well as lard, lard compound and all other by-products, we were shown some venison in a frozen state that had been there for two years.

Venison, however, is not a rare thing with them, as it is estimated that there are as many as 5000 deer on the ranch. We were informed that the annual slaughter of animals at this place, was about 10,000 annually, surely a big thing for a ranch, and one cannot but think that there is much in system, and were this same care used on smaller ranches or farms much could be gained. Leaving Taft, wo started on our return to "Corpus" a drive of more than fifty miles was made, though we covered only a small part of the ranch. Although there are good cattle on. this ranch as well as many others, there is much room for missionary work-in the South.

The "tick" is the great drawback to shipping Northern cattle to Southern Texas, but this will be remedied shortly, the tick will be annihilated, when the Hereford bull of the north should make a great charge on the enemy scrub. And this is one of the things that The Kansas Hereford Breeders' Association hopes to do in the near future, but to accomplish this work thoroughly, and with system, every breeder in the state should become a member, for there is truly a great Held of labor which will return a good profit. Should Build Silos. Topeka, May 15. Every farmer who keeps milk cows should huve a silo. The feed question is the most serious problem that dairyman and farmer will have to face this year, points out the committee on dairying, Kansas council of defense. With feeds steadily" increasing in price every effort should be made to preserve all the home grown feeds possible.

The silo offers the best possible means of furnishing a succulent and palatable feed for the cows during the winter season. Milk cows will produce more milk when receiving siiage than thay will on dry feed. When corn or kafrr is put into the silo instead of harvesting it in the ordinary way a great saving of feed is effected. When corn is put into the silo in place of being handled in the usual way a saving of 30 to 50 per cent is realized. The principal requirement of a silo is that it be airtight at the bottom and sides.

Any material that will fulfil this requirement will keep silage. The cheapest and most practical type to build is tho pit silo in regions where water would not interfere within the first 25 or 30 feet from th'e surface. This type of silo is built on the same plan as the ordinary cistern. In many places in the state the walls of the pit silo MEAT IS CHEAP IN BRAZIL. Thirteen Cents Per Pound for Best Cuts of Beef, Is Price.

Rio de Janeiro, May 15. Brazil's meat market has not yet been stamped by the high cost of living doubtless because there are about twice as -many cattle in the country as people. The last bovine census placed the figure at 50,000,000 head Despite the advice of health authorities who prescribe a light meat diet during hot weather, Brazilians eat approximately their own weight in flesh, fish and fowl annually. And hot weather is Brazil's eternal portion. To feed the aggregate stomach of Rio de Janeiro during 1916 it required 105,000,000 pounds of beef, 2,500,000 pounds of veal, 5,700,000 pounds of pork and 400,000 pounds of mutton, to say nothing of a daily portion of about sixty tons of fish and equal weight of dried beef, pounds of poultry and a liberal amount of goat flesh and wild game.

Brazilians probably are great meat eaters because, relatively.meat is the cheapest thing to eat. Prices fluctuated in 1916 between 7 and 13 cents a pound for beef, 7 and 15 cents for veal and 15 and 23 cents for pork. Live Stock and Farm View Artist Handle Colts Carefully. Colts are sometimes injured by Inexperienced drivers or men who try to do too much when starting to work them. They seem to think that because the colt is large he can do as much as the mature horse "Give the colt light work," advises Dr.
