On the morning of the 23d of last month the Villa de, Havre, a French packet ship, second in size only to th Great Eastern, and plying between' N. Y. and Havre, France, collided with the British ehip Loch Erne, from' London to New York, in latitude 47 deg. 21 minutes. -Ji A dense fog prevailed and the sea was rough.

The French packet was struck amidahip and sunk in twelve minutes carrying down with her 226 human victims. Tbe excitement on the deck of the vessel after she was struck is deeeribed as terrible. 1 Two boats of large' capacity filled with the unfortunate passengers and crew were crushed by two falling raasts before they could be launched, mangling many of the inmates of the boats. Among the unfortunate victims were a number of prominent members of the Evangelical Alliance who wero on their way home from New York. Prominent among these were Rev.

Anthonea Cassaseo, of Spain, Prof. E. Provier, of Genevar Switzerland, and Rev. N. Weiss, Emile Cook andMr.

Lorreis, of Paris, France. The boats of the Loche Erne saved 87 persons, all but three of whom were afterwards transferred to the packet jLamountainand landed at Cardiff. The Loch Erne was very severely injured, and as she was due at Qucenstown last Saturday, and had not been heard from since the Lamoun-tain took off the rose ued passengers, fears are eutertained that she foundered atj sua after the Lamouhtain parted with her. BANG! Almost every boy who goes gunning, if he can find nothing that he wants to bang away at, considers it the best thing to kill a few woodpeck ers. They look so funny, wrong end up on a tree, and whacking around tho loose bark, that the temps tation ra strong and the poor little bird has no friends so bang and down be comes, and he is given to the dog to play with and tear to pieces. The poor little bird, if over a year old, has killed and eaten many hundred thousands of bugs' larvae, in tbe form of grubs and worms, and almost every one of a kind which is injurious to vegetation. The cat-bird, ono of our finest singers, and a bird that is always sociable, if ever permittod to be so, eats a cherry occasionally, and of course he must bo banished or suffer death. Who was it with this time With Tommy Kelly, eh don't you know any better than to fight a boy weighing twenty pounds heavier than you do, besides being two years older than you? N. Momma, formerly of Neodesha, is Mayor of the new city- A great many chaps who class themselves among the "highly educated" occasionally have the duty of furnishing manuscript for the papers and so far as our experience goes we can say nothing very commendable of their productions. Not one person in fifty of those who ever write anything for the papers furnish manuscript that would not reflect unfavorably on their ability as writers, were the printers to "set it up" per copy. The great difficulty with such contributors lies in the fact that they have no practical knowledge of punctuation, capitolization and the correct way of putting down many roper nouns, and perplex the printer abbreviating, making unnecessary paragraphs and indiscriminately using punctuation points and capitol letters, thinking the while they are fixing it up just right.
