Baker, pastor- NOTICE Foil Ji UBLlCAl'ION. Land Ollice at Independence, Kansas, September 9, 1880. The following is from a recent sermon delivered by Dr. Beecher: "A man that has become so rich be don't want Jo associate any more with those he has been intimate with, is in a bad way. He thinks hiniseif too cultured, but the proper way to epell that kind of culture is c-o-n-c-e-i-t.

Some meu get to good to associate with their fellows. Tfcey are so good, so confoun dedly good (laughter) that they don't want to meet men that are not so good. For tbem nobody prayB as thev ought, nobody preaches as they ought. They they thank God that they are not as other meu are, and all other men thank God that it is so too. (Laughter.) There is a tendency in riches to pamper a man's pride, for with prosperity comes power and a tendency of self will; of this the scripture Bays: 'Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit, their is more hope (they didn't pay compliments in those days) more hope of a fool than of What a hopeless set there are about Brooklyn, and Borne of them are here." Every man of sense knows that the democratic party is in sympathy with the national banks.

Their candidate for the vice presidency is one of the leaders of the banking element. Mr. Hancock is hand in glove with the same men, and most of the leaders of the party are recipients of the common plunder. How utterly insincere, then, are democratic professions of sympathy for the greeabackers. That they make pledges to the currency men, with the undisguised intention of.

violating them, is patent to everybody. The people of the United States have finally come to the conclusion that they will vote only for presidential candidates who understand the duties of the office. They believe that a watch ought not to be sent to a blacksmith for repairs, and that civil government ought not to be placed in the hands of a man who haB been trained wholly in military affairs. This prevailing conviction marks the beginning of anew era in iur political affairs, and is the very essence of civil service reform "VrOTICEis hereby given that the lollowing i-' named settler has filed notice of hisinten tiou to make final prool in support of his claim aud secure final entry thereof at this ollice on Monday, October J8th, 1880, viz: Auitin Randall, of Longton, Kansas, lor the south went quarter of i. orth east quarter and north west quarter of south east quarter, of section 22, lowiifhip 30 south, range 12 eftot, and be name the tollowing as his ii Ad-am Deitz, Aaron Uassiield, Charles lieed and Albert Zeverly, all ot Longton, Elk county, Kansis.
