It is one thing to possess dainty, pretty toilet articles and another to keep them in order; yet with a little care the work will not be found so difficult, says a writer in the Troy Times. Rrushes and combs are perhaps the most neglected in this line. A young friend, who has a dresser full of exquisite toilet articles in silver, said to me: "I'm afraid to try to clean my brushes, though they need it so much, for the last time I attempted it I ruined a handsome brush; the bristles all fell out." All hair brushes in daily use require washing every week Or two to be healthy. They collect so much soot and dirt, which is conveyed to the scalp from the brush. The work must be carefully done, but too hot water and too much ammonia will sometimes make the bristles fall out.

And the work has to be done quickly; the brushes should not be left in the water at all. An excellent method is to fill a bowl half-full of warm water and add a little pearline to make a cleansing suds. The Modern Tonties will, in the life of its present officers, be one of the great financial and protective institutions of America, for the principles upon which it is organized and operated are unassailable, evolved from the logic of a long experience in mutual insurance. The order has already passed the experimental stage. Three thousand membership certificates were issued during the year, which closed with the month of April, each month showing a large increase over the corresponding month of the preceding year. For example, he month of shows an addition of 144 members, while in April, liHM), 881 i.ew members wnv added. There is no longer any doubt of the stability of he Tonties, and the people id southeastern Kansas should feel a just pride that the national office of this young and vigorous order is located here in Wichita.

For the amount of business done and the percentage of increase the Tonties probably have no equal among the fraternal companies which are doing business in this state. Indeed, only two orders in Kansas have a larger membership, but the business of the Tonties is not limited to Kansas alone. They already have eighteen established councils in Oklahoma, fifteen in Texas and the order is meeting with wonderful success in Kentucky, Arkansas, Colorado, Washington and ot her states. The secret ot success with this remarkable fraternity is found chiefly in the fact that it is so well adapted to present conditions and needs. The annuity feature is particularly attractive.

It requires little argument to convince the average man or woman that it is a safer protection, if not in all respects hetter, to receive ten percent interest on 0,000 for ten or twenty years or for life than it is to receive jsti.ooo in a lump sum and immediately proceed to spend it. It is no uncommon thing for a man or woman to be paid a policy by some insurance company and in a tew months be again at he tloor of poverty. This association is now upon a firm foundation and is amply able to pay even obligation incurred, by its cer "Xo, I will not violate my oath," ex claimed the Capitol Hill man, striding up and down the room, relates the nities which neither asked nor appreciated the service. It was difficult to find such localities, but such were found, and the service was started there, apparently with the purpose of bringing rural free delivery into disrepute and demonstrating its impracticability. "It is possible this result might have been achieved in time, but under the vivifying influence of a republican postal policy rural free delivery at once sprung Into vigorous life.

The appropriations were increased by congress from the first year to $150,000 the second year, and the third year. On the 2d of April, 1900, close upon 1,000 rural routes had been established, some of them serving as many as 1,2 or 1,500 people daily, the average being 750 persons to a route. Not one state which has asked for the service has been left unrepresented. The good work is still going on. Nothing short of a revolution can now check It.

"Three years' experience has shown that the rural free delivery service is not inordinately expensive. It costs very little more than the old colonial style of postal service, which it supersedes, and It invariably brings a large and compensating increase in the amount of the mail matter handled, and consequent 'y in the amount of postal receipts turned into the treasury. Iiuv even If it does cost more than the obsolete old plan, are not the farmers entitled to some of the benefits of the government which they help so liberally to support by their taxation "the country can well afford to continue and extend a system which makes better citizens, happier homes, and contributes so largely to the mental. While the Tonties are what many regard as the best fraternal protection known, it is by no means claimed by its friends that its plan may not be improved upon, but it is claimed that the order of the Tonties presents the officer in the United States army who is now in the Philippines, the following extract shows that the Americans are not desecrating the Filipino churches, as has been charged. The letter says: "Yesterday we were gunning for in-surrev'tos about five miles out.

I had the advance with orders to enter the town. We advanced with great caution, but as we crossed the bridge and received no fire and came unmolested nearer to the church, which the Insur-rectos always use for defense, I made up my mind that the 400 insurrectos reported there had migrated to a healthier climate. I presume Atkinson and the other Boston Filipinos have been informed that we desecrated the church, but we didn't. The American troops do not desecrate churches which are being1 used as churches; only churches which have been utilized by the insurgents as forts, the windows in many instances closed with masonry and loop-holed, have been occupied by our troops. "Our usual welcome to the 'services of the churches has been exceedingly warm, and the church's 'greeting' consisted of Mauser bullets, which were more blessed for the insurectos to give than for the approaching Americans to receive.

"In cleaning up such 'churches' for use in sheltering our troops, considerable quantities of ammunition have heretofore been found secreted under the altars and elsewhere within the sacred edifices." Another Democratic Falsehood. The report that Capt. Reichman, the United States military attache with the Roer forces, has been participating in the battles is as false as other stories which are being circulated by the sensational press. An investigation shows that Capt. Reich-man has been kept quite busy nursing Lieut.

Put into a large cup one teaspoonful of powdered rhubarb, and one teaspoonful of baking soda. Pour boiling water Dver them, and stand aside to cool and settle. A teaspoonful of this liquid taken after meals for two or three days will correct any slight derangement of the digestive organs without making one ill in the least. Of course the dose should be increased for more serious cases, or for adults. Children should be watched for the first indications of trouble, such as toss of appetite, or headache.

Then, if the tongue is not clear and the breath perfectly sweet, the rhubarb and soda ward off a serious illness. Most children do not find this very disagreeable if a drink of water is given immediately after. In case of persistent diarrhea aromatic sirup of rhubarb is to be preferred.
