The object of the new paper is to make known to the people of Galena, Helena, May 16 Acting Governor Spriggs last night appointed William A. Clark of Butte United States senator to serve until the next legislature shall elect his successor. Senator Clark's resignation was filed early in the day with the governor and last night he was appointed by Acting-Governor Spriggs to succeed himself. Governor Smith, a partisan of the Daly people, left the state two weeks the strain he is undergoing, voiced this national hope in these words: seven counties own their own poor farms.

The aggregate expense of these farms in 1899 was average expense, The total revenues from the seventy-seven farms were average, The net total expense was average, $1,424.87. The total number of inmates in the seventy -seven poor houses was average, 21 7-8. The net annual expense per inmate was $66.10 about 17 1-2 cents a day. The seventy-seven counties reported outside relief in the sum of average, $2,091.52. The total amount paid for the poor poor farms and outside relief in 100 counties was average, $3,445.55.

Ma-lone Co. on Seventh street last night and claimed a bicycle which Malonc Co. had purchased from a young man giving the name of Harry Trice, last Monday. Gittinger claimed the wheel had been stolen from him. He notified the officers of Joplin, who telephoned the Galena police.

The wheel stood on the curb in front of Malone's store for a week, and, notwithstanding a reward of 5 was offered for its return, the Galena officers failed to see it. Malone Co. were satisfied with Gittinger's statements and gave up the wheel. They are now looking, with blood in their hands and tomahawks in their eyes, for one BIG HOTEL FIRE. T.

A Joplin paper announced yesterday that a $50,000 summer hotel is to be erected by a company headed by Richard Nevins, the mining engineer and railroad promoter, at the spring park in Baxter. The Hotel Helena was totally destroyed by fire early this morning and twelve persons were seriously injured by jumping from windows. It is supposed all others escaped. The spread of the flames was so rapid that escape by stairways was cut off and a panic ensued. A number of people were severely burned. Bodies of two women burned beyond recognition were taken from the ruins.

A man is missing who is supposed to have been cremated. Three of the injured may die. NO CHOICE. Harry Trice. New Big Four Mill.

H. E. Overstrcet, of Chicago, is registered at the Century and will remain in the city for some time. Mr. Over-street represents the company of Chi ing a mill and crusher at Carterville nearly three-quarters of a mile whole.

The Galena Foundry and Machine works has brought suit against the Mocking Bird mining company, doing business in Center Valley, between Webb City and Oronogo, and the Four mining company, doing business in Tanyard hollow, for machinery and supplies furnished. Great excitement was at once aroused and in a few moments all sorts of wild rumors about murders, rapes, highway robberies and hen house burglaries were afloat. The effect of these stories was to draw a large crowd of people to the jail, and the hand of Mr. Nevins to touch it with his wand of wealth and influence and breathe into its nostrils his own resistless energy. According to the Joplin paper, which seems to have great faith in Mr. Nevins' tavern projects, and but little in his railroad schemes, a firm of architects have drawn a set of Queen Anne plans for a building 300x340 feet and three stories high with a big porch onto it.

There are to be ball rooms, dining-rooms, correspondence rooms, refreshment rooms and fifty -five sleeping apartments. The company is capitalized for $50,000, but has not yet been incorporated. Geo. Miller, formerly in the grocery business on east Seventh street, and Charlie Payne, a cab driver, mixed last night at the corner of Fifth and Galena. Payne alleges that Miller refused to pay his fare, whereupon Payne appealed to John Dark, night policeman. Dark did not interfere, and Payne started out to the state line, when, near the Presbyterian church, Miller jumped out of the cab. Payne jumped down and demanded his fee.
