A Grand Surprise. A large number of Mrs. E. VV. Fair friends gathered together to give her a complete surprise on her 55th birthday, which occurred Saturday.

When all was in readiness the crowd met at her home, and as she was absent at Mrs. Devine's, she was sent for, and on her entering the home, she was confronted by her friends, headed by Prof. G. L. Williams, the orator of the evening.

As soon as she was inside the house, Prof. Williams began his speech, and the longer he talked, the more embarrassed Mrs. became. At the conclusion of the remarks, a handsome rocker 'and a set of silverware was presented to her. All she could say was, "I can't make a speech, but I can say thanks to you all," and turned the house to the' crowd, which proceeded to spend a pleasant time in music, games, till ten when an elegant supper was served, which was enjoyed by all.

Just as the cloik was striking 12, all departed bidding Mrs. many more years of life and prosperity. Thus end ed a very pleasant evening. Those Wonderful Giants in Town I If you wish to see thorn call on Fair Son and ask for Beggs' Little Giant Pills. Every bottle guaranteed.

A precious, sweet flower has been plucked. Amid shade and shadow it opened its beautiful life to live and die. Its love, and love for it, had grown deep into heart and home. This beautiful flower has been placed on the hea ft of him whodied and lives. A change has been made, darkness for light, pain for pleasure, sorrow for joy, death for life.

Life is a pilgrimage between two eternities. Sunshine and shade are scattered on the way. Sorrow and kisses in the darkness. The star of hope and joy, laughs in the sunshine of love. Life is the com mencement of the journey, the morn- iug of destiny.

Death is the silent going out of a vale of joy and sadness into the wide plains of immor- tallity. J. R. Millsap. A New Joke On the liver.
