Paine's celery compound has been used and enthsiastically recommended by the most judicious, considerate, careful men and women in every city in the United States, as an absolute cure for nervous debility and exhaustion, neuralgia, sleeplessness, melancholia, hysteria, headaches, dyspepsia, rheumatism, kidney trouble, and all blood diseases. City for the Price. The Topeka Kaptist union has been organized to meet quarterly in this city. The officers are as follows: President -W. L. Trumbull.

Vice President E. R. Simmerwell. Secretary John O'Day. Treasurer Miss Carrie Sheffield.

The union held a meeting at the Baptist church last night. In his opening address President Trumbull explained the purposes of the organization, and expressed the hope that the union will pave the way to more extensive mission work in this city. He contributed $3 towards the fund for the purpose. Others contributed freely and the union already has quite a sum of money to take up its work. The program last night consisted principally of music.

Miss Serena Pratt sang "Little Boy Mrs. B. Meredith sang "The Day Is Done," and Mrs. T. Witting also assisted with vocal music.

Little Mary Clauser and Raymond Conners contributed to the success of the program with music and Miss Grace Noble recited "Ben Hazard's Guess," and in response to an encore delivered "Swinging in the Grape Vine," Rev. E. B. Meredith also delivered an address. The attandance was good.

At 4:30 o'clock yesterday evening the jury in the Hillmon case filed into the federal court room and in answer to the usual question assured the court that it was utterly impossible to agree upon a verdict, whereupon Judge Foster discharged the jury and the case was continued. It is perhaps not expedient to criticise the actions of juries in every instance, but here as evidently a case where some one deserves censure.

It has been evident from the start of this case that the sympathy of the court and the press of this city has been largely with the insurance companies. The court seemed to lean largely this way as shown by his instructions to the jury and in his every act. It is very easy for the court to show its sympathy in a thousand little ways; ways which are not noticed by the average looker on but which are almost imperceptably absorbed by a jury and almost as imperceptably effects the verdict, although the jury, itself not be cognizant of the fact. The instructions were read three times to the jury by the court and each time the judge seemed to be more dramatic in his air and to dwell with power upon those points that were favorable to the defendants. Two of the jurors held policies in two of the defendant insurance companies.

This may not have had effect upon their verdict, but it is at leasi open -to suspicion." The jurors were permitted to eat at the same table with the court and attorneys of the defendants. The jury was not guarded as closely in their deliberations and in their leisure moments as the importance of the case demanded they should be.
