WELDY, Editor and Proprietor, Entered at the post-office at Galena, Kansas, as second class mail matter, Ten Cents a Week, Delivered by carrier to any part of the city or mailed to any address BATES, COTTER PLANT. UNEXCEIiED IN THE DISTRICT FOR STRUCTURE AND MACHINERY. The Methods Used. Set the Pace for Economic Modern Mining. This new mining company recently securing control of parts of the Central and Crystal leases and the "Old Stand ard'' mill have set the pace for th best and most economic mining machinery and methods in the district.

Barely three months ago 11. Cotter person ally took charge of this rich mining ground He at once planned to erect three mills equipped with the famous Bates-Corliss engines and heaters, 6up pigmented with coodensors and Cotter emoke consumers. To this was added the thorough repairing and over haul ing of the old Standard mill. How well he has progressed with tbe work evidenced by the completion and op eration of one of the beat appointed new plants of 300 tens capacity, double shift. be found anywhere in the South west, and the rehabilitation of the old crusher into a fine reduction mill, known as No 2.

The new plant named No. 1 fitted with a splendid 100 horse power Bates-Corliss engine with the latest appliances, a lto horse loiler and cendeusor requiring only barrels of water per day. as against 100 barrels used in other plants of this size where there are other makes of machinery. The two other mills in the company program are to be erected and ready for operation rhi3 fail ihese mills iso. and 4 are intended to be more complete construction and detail besides larger capacity than the new plant recently Completed.

The building and equipping of other mills by this company is contemplated later in the year. It may be mentioned right here that Bates, Cotter Co. have been repeatedly solicited to staf their selling price, but their invariable answer is, that they have bnilt No. 1 and bought No. 2 mills to operate and not to sell.

One striking peculiarity which srreets visitois to No. 1 is the entire ab- of emoke and escaping steaea and although the plant is in full operation during the 24 hours there tre no outward evidences of the work only Hie throwing off of the tailings. Every ap pliance about tho 1 mill is the Ik est and best even to the under ground men's dressing Toom and carpenters and blacksmith's ehops. The Bates Corliss engines are made by the same firm at Joliet, 111., and are in extensive use in mining countries particularly in South Africa where several carloads of thes? superb engines, 6ome of them of 2000 horse power, have been shipped to the gold fields there. Other conspicuous features of this nexr and splendidly EVstemized tdant are the large double boister engine, and the 1560 pound ca pacity tubs drawn with S-8 eteel cables and to three ordinary tubs.

There are 300 to 450 tubs of dhrt hoisted during each s'liist. The betters used in Irhis -mili are felso maac by tire same company. These, together with the ddable crushers, three tets of jigs, four sets of rollers with the necessary screens anfi elevators go to make this mill the completest concentrating plant in the district The ground is showing up. well-on the No 1 property and the hoisting is being done from one shaft. An east and west 120 foot drift has been cut from the pump 6haft to the hoisting -shaft at a depth of 90 feet.

It fine lead and jack, north and south -and -a continuous run of ore along the diift. The pump shaft is 116 feet depp and both shafts will be sunk to 150 feet in a few weeks to catch the lower run of ore. The shells and crusher jaws in both No. 1 and 2 plants are Manganeese steel, far more durable than the iron ones generally ued. Mr.

Cotterwas the first operator to introduce these etel shells and "jaws" in the South we.ct zinc ore fields The No. 2 mill has not quite the capacity or the thorough equipment of No. 1. although con pideraHe money has already been expanded in over hauling the plant. The additions of condensor, heaters and fuel jeavipe appliances are beicg placed and nai was rormeriy me oia standard mill will in ehort time be a first- "7 2f0 ton reduce on plant.
