OI STANDARD By C. r. nd. '95 In Ibdastml. It is eafy to drift with the current, to rush with tbe crowb, to do as other people do; but when it comes to matters pertaining to home, schoo1, and to business life in the world, hat is it to lite, and what shtll be our standards iu these different walks of life? The fact is, as you have beard over and over again, that soon we are to take up tbe burdens of thus; passing away aud carry tbem or.

In tbe hume life tbe reitpont-ibilitv rets with tbe parents, as to whiit 'be standard shall be: but with tbe school life comes a responsibility which belougs to one's self, and with it begins the ideal of life whicb each attains for himself. As lung as life lasts there will be questions faciLg us, questions which caunut be answered aud settled by quie iutellt-cts alone, and only those that can be trusted will be given pla ces of trust. What would have be-c jine of the hlavery question had there not been a William Lloyd Garrison was willing to be called a fanatic, willing to be pursecnted, that he (flight help crash one of the monster (bat threatened to destroy our freedom? Jones took tbe Rocb Island for Colorado Springs where she will remain for several months visiting her mother and friends. Mr. Joues made the News office a pleasant call and inform us that since his return from Colorado last spring, accompanied by bis young wife, he bas been working his farm in Rawlins county, occasionally straying to his old haunts in the printing office A few days ago the Emel brothers, living 12 miles south of Brewster, received at winona, a present of a jug of whisky from a brother in the East Since their residence here theboys have ived sober, orderly lives, but on their way home iu company with others they allowed passions to master their judgement, and were soon lost in wild revalry Horse run ning was indulged in wheb Ameil Em el, who had become completely intoxi- icated, was thrown from tbe wagon un observed by his companions, but was soon picked up by others returning from town and transfcred to his own wagon, where be. lay in a stupor wLtn thev reached home. By this time the others were too beastly Jdrunk to take him in, but threw a blanket over him and left bim in tbe wagon over night.

In the morning he was frzen to insensi bility, and died five days later, after suffering untold agonies. This is only a smull item of the evils of alcoholism, and would.attract only a passing interest in a country, of open saloons but here such occurances are viewed wiih horror, May Hie day speedily come when our state, with all tbe others will have shuken from thei limbs the awful fetters. of rum We would have our Populist friends ask the Republican neighbors how much more taxes the count will have to pay this than last year? This would be a good question for Phu to answer. Phil's cholic seems to be getting worse. We know of no remedy unless it be to Jturn tbe county funds over to him.

How would it do for the Commissioners to appoint him to do the business of the countv? He surely had more to say at the first meeting of the new board than ail tbe rest put together It seems that if the Great Creator had vested the usual allowance of good sense in Troutfetter, he would keep sun about anvniove uie commissioners make, for every one knows that the Republican Commissioners have the blackest record of any county officers since the county was first Organised. WASHINGTON LETTTR. From our ntulir corrtiponifnt. Washington) Jan. 20, 1S93.

Congress, or at least a goodly portion thereof, is juwt at present making a concerted bluff on the siher quea tiom With 4 great flourish of trumpets, bills for the repeal of the present silver law bate been favorably re ported to the House and to tbe Senate, and people who only look at the outside of things may believe that tbe silver law is really to bo repealed or modified. But those familiar with tbe undercurrents of things Congressional know that tbe passuge of bills would be the greatest of surprise to Congress, iudividnally and collectitelyi The reasons for this make believe policy are easy to locate. The principle one is Mr. Cleveland's desire to have the silver law repealed or at least that portion of it compelling the monthly purchase of 4,500,000 oundas of silver- This 1 iu 1. u.fct8 toe democrats acuvw; iaej wisn TO stand- well with the incoming Presideut, in order that their constituents may not get left ont in the cold.

The eastern repnb hcana are naturally inclined to bp tp posed to tilter, and in addition they great business interests of tbelrge cities, which are loiidlv demanding tbe repeal of tbe silver law. This be jDg the situation why will there be no Hilver is a natural query? Simply because, leaving tbe House out of tbe question entirely, there are enough Senators who will oppose it to prevent it going through tbe Senate, and tbe men who are making the loudest noise on this question are perfectly aware of that fact, as any one else may be who cares to take tbe trouble to interview tbe Senators of all parties from tbe So utb I and tbe nortbwes; they make nc se cret of their intention to defeat silver egislation, and even if they cannot control an actual majority of the Sen ate they can easily, under the Senate rules, talk the proposed bill to death, and, mark tbe prediction they will do it, if a serious attempt is made to pass it, which is doubtful. There is some very plain talk in the minority report of the House committee on Commerce, on the bill authorising tbe Interstate Commerce Commissioners to allow railroad pool ing in their discretion, which wa prepared by Representatives Lind, if Minnesota, and Mallory, of Florida "It is," the report says, "tbe firet meafcure that bus ever received tl.e sanction of a committee of the House to make legal and enforceable at law contracts for the division of traffic. It propose to legalize railroad wreck ing and stock speculations by author isung not only agreements fi tbe di vision and apportionment of earnings among tbe carriers themselves, but also by authorizing tbe carriers to di vide and apportion these among oth er carriers. Under these provisions stockholders will be as much at tbe mercy of railroad managers as wi the public.

The Standard Oil Com pany, the dressed beef combine and other monopolies can obtain rebates by contracts enforceable in tbec-'Jrts, iustead of by stealth as hereb-fore. The bill tukes away tbe only tufo guard that we have had heretofore against railroad extortion. If an attempt be made to pass this bill there will probably be some still plainer talk on the floor of both House aud Senate. The Chicago people who are here in the interest of an amendment to tbe World's Fair act of the last fa sion oi Congm.s, permitting the open ing of the exposition on Sunday, have, to use a sporting expression, been "fought to a by theoppo nents of Sunday opening. The Houw committee having the matter iv bund, of which Represeutatiqe Duborrow, a Chicago man is Chairman, ts almost unanimous in favor of Sunday open ing, but opposition has shown itself in so many quarters that the matter will nut be pushed just now.

A num-ber of Senators have, expressed most positively their belief that it wonlu be an impossibility to carry Sanday opening through the Senate, even if it gets through the House. Still 6brewd management may do much in the confusion of the closing days of the session. The House committee on Terri tuiies hat made a favorable repurt on the bill introduced by Delegate Caine for tae admission of Utah to State hood: The House bus put itself oh record as favoring the election of Senators by direct vote of the people, by pass ing tbe joint resolution authorizing tbe change, but if tbe determined opposition by (he republicans of the Houi-e is an indication of the position of the republican Senators on the question its prospect for getting through the Senate is not so good as its friends might wish it to be. Senator Peffer not only wauls Sn ators. but si so President and Vice-President elected by popular tote, and he made a lutig and all speech Ion 1 in the subject this week thowmg he hlld msde d5ep hinii? tbe subject His speech lokt much of the attention it might hate rectmsl becahbe of the amuigenlent of business before the Senate, which cm pelled him to deliver it in aeotu ns, as it were, a little every day for se? ml djt, i e.
