If social doctors sad prophets could realise tbeir dreams of human perfectibility and happiness, tbe lost Eden of the race would have been long ere this regained.

With sll their dreaming and prophesying, however, the old processes of advancement remain "ss they were from the beginning." If wealth is sought ss tbe mesne of securing leisure, gratifying a cultivated taste, and unlocking all the sources of enjoyment, it is found by invariable experience that steady, persistent labor, and not the philosopher's stone, is the inexorable condition on which the fates will yield it the seeker. If we would make the great body of society intelligent, wise, just and merciful, we find by the same experience thst the seeds of these' virtues must be planted in the Oar St. Louis neighbors are now speculating apoa aa obstacle to the great balk of the trade of tbe Northwest going down the Mississippi to New Orleans, which does not seem to have struck them very forcibly before. This exhibition as far excels th Boston Industrial Exhibition aa the Crystal Palace" is superior to the meanest log cabin" of our country. On my entrance into the Palace, on my left I beard a noise which led me almost to suppose that I waa approaching a ben roost;" I turned and beheld all kinds of poultry, and many birds, at the head of which is "a lire American Eagle." In the poultry department are to be found imported Aylesbury, Maltese Ducks, as also the white Muscovy; gray and white China Geese, as also imported Bremen Geese. In the chicken department are to be found the gray, white and black Shanghai the Polander of every variety, and all sort and sixes, from the immense coarser Shanghai down to the little Bantam. Th next department which excited my attention was the Agricultural department, in which are all sorts of labor-saving implements and articles for the farm and farmer, two or three of which I will notice, as they are of great utility on our prairie farms.

Ia answer to the inquiry How shall Georgia and other aDsecured currency be driven oat, the writer aaya: There ia but one way I know of by which this can be done. Tbe farmers and tbe Leenalature must effect it. Ho one else can.

Brokers may run each other till they are all tirad, mad newspapers may attack and defend Georgia currency, till type and ink are exhausted, and yet in some form or ether aa unsecured currency, if tolerated by the farmer and Legislature, will aasume the Georgia type. This is substantially the position maintained by tbe Passe throughout the currency war, and which the Trilmn has uniformly, though unsuccessfully, endeavored to controvert. The only safe ana certain remedy consist in the adoption of a banking law sufficiently liberal in it provision, to induce capitalists to furnish a currency ander it, commeaaurate with the wants of the State. Until this is don we shall have, as the correspondent of the says, in some form or other an unsecured The combined assaults of Brokers ud of tbe newspapers controlled by them, can only have the effect to amsettls and derange the business relatione of tbe country by creating a temporary panic and stringency in money affairs. Supposing that such a war may lead to a partial withdrawal of the objectionable circulation from tbe channels of trade, yet tbe general effect will be to strengthen it in pablic estimation in proportion to tbe violence of tbe attack upon it, from which (act tbe evil may be largely increased when tbe war is over, and thus more than counterbalance any supposed temporary good results.

It is as plain a noooday, therefore, that the course of the brokers wbo are making this war and of the newspapers that abet them, is in direct opposition to tbe interests of every clsss of community, thst its consequences sre mischiev-ious in tbe highest degree, without tho accomplishment of any good. Railroada have enabled him to meet hi appointments, though hundreds of miles apart. The discussions of the newspaper press had prepared the people for bia coming, and they have listened attenuvely to what be bad to say in defence of his lata political course. It was a desperate stake, and Douglas played a desperate game. The whole force of his being was thrown into the contest and if he bas not succeeded, it was not because of any omissions oa bis part. Every assailable point waa attacked the prejudices of the people wer besetged opponent were bitterly denounced, and evea lukewarm friends were spurred up by promises of fur' ture preferment.

Such has been the programme which bas been enacted in our midat during the laat thirty days. And why, let as ask, bas all this been done Stephen A. DougUa, a Democratic Senator, has been compelled, by the force of popular opinion, to resort to this humiliating Erocedure, in order to bolster up bis waning p--tical fortunes. He deserted the party that placed him in the position which he has prostituted to such unholy purposes be turned upon the Democratic party in the hour of its victory, and sought to engraft new testa into its platform. It ia aa unwelcome thought, yet the truth must be told, let the consequence be wbat they may.

At the meeting of the last National Congress, the Democratic party was a unit it was beset by no foes without and assailed by no traitors within. It presented an unbroken front, and was powerful for good. It would have gone on in tbe path it had trod tha path which Jefferson, Jackson, aud the long list of patriots had trod bad not its harmony been disturbed by our own Senator. The repeal of the MUtouri Compromise has done what years of unremitting devotion on the part of the conservative Democracy will hardly be able to rectify. It was do part of the mission of that party to break down that time-honored compact it wss not duty tbst prompted it it was not the subject of clamor by sny considerable portion of tbe people: the South had not asked for it, and the North was content to let it remain a memento of the patriotism of its originators, and because it waa wise, just, and kept alive that spirit of concession, without which, no great measure was ever consummated.

The deed has been done, and it bitter fruits are visible. The object of our Senator in his speeches has been to force his peculiar views down the throats of tbe people, and to justify himself. He bas denounced all wbo had the independence to protest against the great wrong he has committed in the uame of Democracy. I did it, and Democrats must sustain me." This is hi. motto.

In the midst of all his denunciations against those who differ with him, he has found no words ot condemnation for those who bsve so grossly prostituted the elective franchise in Kansas and wbo made free-speech and free-thought crimes, to punish which they enacted laws unequalled in atrocity in any uncivilized state. Tbe executive of ft great nation is made the willing tool of the Kansas conspirators, and our Senator raises not his voice against the outrage. The acts of omission and commission of the President and his advisers are many. Mr. Douglas bas thus far acquiesced in them'.

To that source alone be should look for consolation. We hsve already said that Mr. Douglas hss failed to justify himself before his constituents. He hss added nothing to his reputation for candor and fair-dealing. Under his leadership tbe Democratic party hss received a terrible shock its banner trails in the dust, even in the house of its friends.

But, we do not despair of it. We have great faith iu the honesty and patrotism of the people. Democracy is no emptv, meaningless term; it is a vi Mr. Bridge, it is supposed, is the only one saved of the individuals named. An hour after the disaster, voices from beneath the wreck of tbe locomotive were heard asking for assistance, and when we left the scene of disaster, active efforts were making to relieve the sufferers.

It is possible nay, it is to be hoped probable, that some of these unfortunates may have been rescued. It is certainly the best and tbe disasters of river, aavigatioa would be a very serious drawback upon -tbe profit. Those disasters are not to beregarded a contingencies which may or may not occur, but as something inevitable, ears to happen to somebody. Those of tbe last spring and summer, though completely swallowing ujt two millions of dollars worth of property, must be reckoned, according to the Inspector's report above referred to, a a minimum of th avenge that may be anticipated hereafter. Every year about ao many stesmboats are sure to be snagged, blown up, burnt, sank, run aground, aad otherwise injured and destroyed, with a like fortune tutheir valuable freights. However forfM-nate the trade of any given year, all who engage in it may reckon with certainty upon a loss of at least two millions of dollars in the aggregate.

In an article some montha since, we endeavored to ahow, and we think we did show, the great advantages of railroads over rivers, in the certainty and the safety of the means of transportation which they present. We referred to the disasters upon the Ohio early in the spring, and again in the summer, and to the frequent interruptions in the narigatioa of the Upper Mississippi, as illustrative of our position. The practical effect of this difference in favor of railroads is very strikingly illustrated in the falling oS in the trade of New Orleans, and its diversion by railroad to other commercial centres. Not long since the Memphis JEagU predicted that grass would yet grow in the streets of New Orleans, in consequence of the Mississippi trade going scross the country eastward, snd the sgi-tation of the subject, pro and con, has given rise to a very spicy discussion. It was" not contended that New Orleans would lose her trade so much on account of the dangerous navigation of tbe Mississippi, as from the hopeless unhealth-ineas of her location, and tbe roundabout route to Eastern markets, coupled with a climate unfavorable to the preservation of perishable commodities.

On the general subject, the Philadelphia Kurth American makes the following sensible remarks, which, we observe, have attracted the attention of our St. Louis cotemporeries Commerce finds channels of its own. It has found several excellent ones direct from the west to the northern Atlantic seaboard, by railways, canals, and it will be very likely to adhere to tbem, sin energy, industry, tact, enterprise, and capital Re all at work to keep it there, and tber, the wide world over, have guided the destinies of trade. Wbat is called the diversion of trade from New Orleans by tbe Northern railways, is simply tbe avoidance of a long, circuitous snd dangerous navigation. It will be ia vain for the Orleannais to praise up their "natural route," a establish steam lines, unless they set themselves vigorously at work to diminish the dangers to which tbe navigators of tbe Western rivers is subject.

New Orleans is but tbe growth of the trade of those streams. Tbe stagnation of its trade is indicative of the preference of the safer and more expeditious transportation by direct land routes, in consequence of tb great and constant losses experienced on the river routes. If a man, having a given quantity of domestic produce to send to market, loads three Salboats to send it down to New Orleans, and loses two of the cargoes on the route by tbe snsg-ging of his boats, would it not be much better for him, next season, to ship his produce to Philadelphia by railway direct Thia ia the plain common sense view of the case, and it is of that kind which goes home to the appreciation of all tbe producers of the West. If, therefore. New Orleans would recover its ascendancy in western trade, it must do so by the improvement of the navigation of the western rivers, snd it can do so by no other means that we know of.

Let tho influence of that city, and of all tbe others bordering the Mississippi and its tributaries, be devoted to an energetic and continued effort on behalf of the recommencement of the operations of the snag boats, and other sopliances for the removal of obstructions to nsrigation. In these days of progress trade does not feel itself obliged to follow natural channels," and those who place their sole reliance upon the advantages of nature aud position, will be very spt to find themselves surpassed by the votaries of art. But has the New Orleans tbe and its smount will incresse in the same ratio that tbe bills of tbe Atlanta and Interior are driven out. Now wbat a miserable, transparent cheapest fence I have seen. beheld la all the churches in the city.

They have discovered a sort of royal railroad to knowledge and happiness, which takes sn air-line over all manner of hills of difficulty," and with one sonorous blast of the whistle lands its passengers in another "Happy Talley or on the top of some Delectable Mountain." In modern times, Jean Jacques Rousseau wss tbe first to proclaim a scheme for the world's regeneration, while personally be remained vicious snd miserable, and led all bis disciples into quagmires of evil. St. Simoa camo after him, aud waa only less unfortunately successful, because be lacked Jbe genins of his teacher. Tben followed Fourier, who came to fulfill all the law and tbe prophets of his half-craiy predecessors, and announced a system which, with a marvel of generalization and detail, was a impracticable as it was ingenious.

Lesser prophets taught it in this country, and tbe attempt to realize it, was its death. New prophets, however, have arisen who seem to bs the direct inheritors of the debris of tbe old system above referred to. Free Love" has sprung up as a fungus from the ruins, and we fear that it most baleful development is yet to be manifested. But the latest aocial gospel was enunciated by Mrs. Ernestine L.

Rose at the late Woman's RightsConventiou at Cincinnati. Her psnacea for all human ills was laid down in four propositions, which somehow we have lost, but we remember two of tbem, snd hasten to present them to our readers. They are 1. To snatch the key of knowledge from the girdle of the teacher." S. To destroy competition." These propositions would be entirely enigmatical standing by themselves, but the antecedents of Mrs.

Rose may perhaps belp us to their solution. She is Polish lady by birth, snd we presume borrowed ber system from the French school of infidel philosophers. At sll events, she was first known in this countr ss au associate of the Abner Kneeland sect ot infidels, snd for many years wss prominent speaker at their gatherings. To this faith or rather abnegation of faith aha has from time to time superadded most of the new-fangled isms, and ia now known ss one of the most eloquent advocates of Wo-uisn's Rights. But wbat about that "key of knowledge We think we understand the hidden meaning of her language, though it is quite possible that tbe does not comprehend it herself.

She, like all so-called reformers of her class, is self-sufficient in knowledge. She and her associates monopolise it all, and the rest of the world lies in outer dsrkness. Having accepted a faith which begina by extinguishing the soul itself, or st least brings it down to the level of tbe brutes that perish, they very logically ignore all sources of knowledge out of themselves. Tbe maxims of tbe great, and wise, and good of all ages, which have sunk deep in tbe world's heart, snd are the guide of tbeir life, sre ss nothing to them. Teacher I Tbey acknowledge no teacher, not even the greatest and divinest who has yet spoken to men.

Certainly no teacher to whom mankind now look up, carries that "key." Self sufficiency, self-will, and self-indulgence embrace the whole arcana of their science. We are not quite so clear as to what is meant by destroying competition." If Mrs. Rose had aonounced her object to b. tbe destruction of the principle of gravitation, she would st least hare been intelligible. One is just aa easy of accomplishment as tbe other.

The competition to which she refers consists, we suppose, in those obstacles which oppose the realization of her sys-tum certain moral and economical laws which obstinately refuse to beset aside at the bidding of theorists. They cores pond exactly with gravitation. The destruction of the latter would give free play to a universal dance of atoms; thatof the former would result in a hopeless chaos in human society everywhere. We do uot theorize we predicate our conclusions upon ssd facts, some of them of very recent date. Just in proportion as tbe wild social vagaries to which we bsve referred obtain acceptance, do we see an approach to pandemonium.

With satanic instinct, those wbo teach them strike st the foundations of society at the Family That destroyed, by Free Love" or sny other kindred form of evil, their triumph would be complete. Iu some instances they were piled one on the other, and this position most likely conduced to the greatest amount of injury. We observed one car lying at a right angle with the bridge, tbe bottom nearly forced out, and ic the space thus made several dead bodies were observed by those on the outside. Another hsd bees crushed by tbe ponderous wheels of one in the rear but whether immediately behind it, it is impossible to say and in this a heavy loss of life occurred. The ceiling by tbe overriding car was crushed for half its length to the floor, and when tbe top was removed, we counted five lifeless bodies, one with a wheel resting fully on the breast. As soon as the crash was over, a moment of painful silence ensued, and tben issued from the wreck around us tbe groans of tbe wounded, the supplications of the imprisoned, the screams of tbe agonized, while here and there might be observed the upturned face of the dead mangled and clotted with blood, or the half buffed forms of others whose spirits had passed away forever.

To add to tbe horror of tbe scene, a storm of lightning, thunder and rein arose of the severest description. Tbe lightning appeared to be of blood-red, and tbe peals of thunder, quick as the flasb, resounded on the hills and through the valleys of the dreary forest with terrific grandeur.
