The Rifles, under whose auspices was the celebration, were out in force and presented a very fine appearance.

Death of J. C. Bennett. Sunday morning last the sad intelligence reached this city that Mr. J.

C. Bennett, nnfil recently a resident of Emporia, had been found dead in bed at the hotel at Kansas City where he was Btoppiog. About 9:30 p. m. Mr.

Bonnet retired for the night, remarking to the clerk that he felt somewhat depressed on account of the heat. Ia the morning he wa3 found dead in his bed by a gentleman who occupied the same room, and who is a travelling salesman for the same firm which Mr. Bennett has represented for some time. A coroners inquest was held and the jury returned a verdict that he had died of heart disease. His remains arrived in this city Monday and were interred in Maplowood cemetery yesterday, tho Masonic and Knights of Honor fraternities attending the funeral in a body.

In the three bird match lleustis and Sterry took 1st prize, Bragunier 2d and Waits 3d. There was some wild shooting, but the boys had a good time. Mr. James Linch, one of Jackson township's most prosperous farmers and influential made us an agreeable call last week. In his efforts to smother the flames Mr. Henderson had his hands and arms severely burned. Medical aid was summoned and all that human skill could do was done to relieve the sufferer of pain. For a time hopes were entertained that the unfortunate girl might recover, but at 3 p. m.

of the following day she peacefully passed away surrounded by her grief -stricken parent and sorrowing friends. The funeral took place from thefamily residence, over Mr. Wood's store on Sixth avenue, Friday afternoon. It is the most heartrending accident which has happened in this city for many years, and it should bo a terrible warning against the use of kerosene for starting fires. Fatally Shot.

The excitement attending the attempt upon the life of President Garfield was greatly intensified on the Fourth by the terrible accident which about 9 :30 a. resulting in the death of Johnnie Munson by a pistol shot in the hands of a playmate. The boy killed was playing with some companions in front of the court house, most of whom hod toy pistols which they wore shooting using blank cartridges, but it is evident that at least one of the boys must have put something besides powder in hia pistol else the killing would never have oecured.
