Green is able to do duty once more after a brief illness. A May party -was indulged in by many of the school children last Saturday. Dr. Stoyer's wife went to Indiana Saturday last visit to friends at her old home. Mr.

Lee J. Orr, conductor of extras, started to Indianapolis, last Saturday on a visit to his old home. See the "ad" of J. Davis in this issue. Jim is always prepared to furnish as fine turnouts as anybody in that business.

Atty. General Davis and family, came down from to Topeka, last Friday, and were the guests of C. B. Bacheller. The Baptist social Monday evening at the residence of Mrs.

M. E. Roberts was a very enjoyable and pleasant affair. Mr. Charles Ryder returned Monday from an extended visit with friends in the east.

Capt. North ij very much relieved by his arrival. Mr. Birdcall ha resigned his position on the police force to accept a position of messenger from the Adams Co. "We congratulate him on his promotion.

The preparatory work on the new hotel has been commence. The Buggies building is beirg moved out of the way, and the work of laving the foundation will be commenced at once. The Presbyterian church was well filled Sabbath evening to hear the lecture of Rir. Dudley entitled "Newspapers." The lecture wi'l bo found in full on tbe second page, and will well repay a careful peruFal. A lirge stable is being built at tho Fair grounds for tle accomodation of fast hoivf s.

A number are now on the grounds training for the coming horse fair which begins the 11th of the present month. Mr. J. Watrous, of tbe Bnrlirgton Independent, smiled most pleaseritly on us Monday evening. John is a tip top good fe low, a newspaper man nud devoted to his profession.

He informed us that they had a heavy shower of rain at Chanute that morning. The city engineer reports that about two-tiirds of the work on the water works building i completed. Word reaches us from all parts of the county that many democrats express their intention of attending the mass convention in this city on the 15th of this month. It gives us pleasure to lenpw that democrats are becoming aroused to the importance of the occasion, and will manifest their patriotiem hj turning out in force on that occasion.

The sfate examination for certificates and diplomas will be held in To peka, Lawrence, Empori and Manhattan, commencing Augnst 233, and continuing for several days. The examination will comence the same day in each city mentioned and will be in charge of tho superintendent of the public institutions of learning at those cities. Dr. J. W.

C. Tbe Dr. goes there as a delegate to the Supreme LoJge of the Knights of Honor. Before returning, the Dr. and his family will visit Boston, New York, and Niagra Falls.

We wish them a very pleasant time on their extensive tour, and a safe arrival home. A troupe called the Hibernian Blodes attempted to give an entertainment at the opera house at Topeka lost week, but before it was half through the audience, composed of the roughs of the ity, became enraged and attempted to mob the troupe. A large number of visiting Ireihren participated in the street parade. Hon. John Martin, of Topeka, was the orator of the day, and his address is fpoken of as being a master-piece of eloquence, humor and logic. An elegant supper was nerved at the Commercial house, and in the evening the festivities closed with a grand wick, County Attorney, and Miss Flora Fredrick were united in the bonds cf of blissful wedlock, Rev. G.

W. Pye of ficiating. The ceremony was celebrated in a very quiet way, but a few of the near and intimate relatives of the contracting parties being present. ovial, good natured Tom Sedgwick lias at last been mated, and by one of the most amiable, gentle and lovable young ladies of Emporia. We congratulate the couple on their happy nuptials, and wish that, as they journey together down the stream of life, their pathway may be strewn with fragrant roses, and their bark ever find smooth and pleasant sailing.

COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS. The following are the proceedings of public interest of the council at its meet ing Monday evening Street commissioner Strickler's report was read and filed, and city clerk in structed to certify the same to county clerk at proper time, to be placed on the tax roll of 1880. The city engineers estimate showing that two-fifths of the work on water works building had been completed, was read and placed on file: The resignation of M. Birdsall as policeman, was accepted. The application of R.

Vernon to have the liquor license of M. Baker trans ferred to him was denied on the ground of legal obstacles. A petition asking for ft. sidewalk on the east-side of Commercial street, be tween 7th and 9fch avenues, was referred to the committee on ordinances with in structions to report an ordinance for the same if deemed advisable. The special committee to whom was referred the paving of the alley west of Commercial street reported that the work had been done according to contract and $25 was reserved as security for the completion of the work.

A resolution was adopted granting the public schools the use of the Normal boarding haHs after the vacation of the same by the removal of the students to the new buildingr in case of thepayment for a monthly rent for each of $25.. The following committees were ap pointed by the4nayor and mean3 Fox, Whittlesey Streets4 and Alleya--Lowe, Thatcher and Fox. Ordinances Watscn, Taylor and Tbachef. Fire Department Theis, Watson and Whittlesey. 1 City Property Thatcher, McCulloch and Watson.

Confirmed by a vote of four yeas to two nays. The nomination cf B. Fia Irwia was rejected by a vote of five nays tcrone yep. The nomiaaticn of T. Fleming for city marshal wa? rejected by a vote of four nays to two yeas.

ThrfKlls on the clerk's desk were accepted, and the council adjourned to meet the third Monday in May. KANSAS. Berry and the' Misses Minnie and Flora Lanter, of Garnet, have been visiting here during the past week, and returned last Monday morning. Twelve or thirteen ''white' capped" wagons passed through our streets last Friday, euroute for the "west. We learn that Joe. Evand and B. Stump started for the Pacific slope, last Monday or Tuesday.

Tour coirespondent was at Ottumwa on Saturday and found one store less than it had formally boasted of, owing to the fact that its Kansas City creditors had closed it out. Health throughout this vicinity is extremely good. In fact this is one of the healthiest localities in any portion of the state. The river is lower now than it has been known for come time. A M.

E. Sabbath school is about to be organized at this place M. K. Evans had two valuable horses die, not long since, with a strange disease going the rounds among the horses here. Dr.

Jinks lost one a few days since, and J. M. Smith one on Sunday last. A land agency firm of Burlington has settled a colony- of exodusters in one corner of this township with the avowed intention of changing its politics to that of republicanism and imperialism. Frances.
