fall and next spring, but the great mass are living in the future, although the preparation of ground for vines and fruit trees is the first work a man should do when he takes a claim in the western country, as it requires years thereafter beforo he can enjoy the luxury of fruit. About the middle of the afternoon the coach arrived at the Irving Station, a pleasant little town about 15 miles below Marj's-vilie, surrounded by the most fertile and lovely country the eye could wish to feast upon. Hero is located the "Wetmoro Institute" a magnificent building standing out prominent above all others. It is under the superintendence of Rev. John L.

Chapman, and is certainly a credit to the country. Here too, to the credit of the place be it said, live the only two men from whom I ever received orders for vines, north of my propagating gardens, I mean John L. Freeland, County Commissioner, and W. II. Warren, P.

M. and merchant. Wo crossed the Big Blue a few miles above Irving, and as the stage had been late in starting "the mantle of night" soon covered us with darkness, but a driver of some sixteen years expeiience put us througk and a little after dark we fouud ourselves at the Post Office where we met Our friend Ilearfey, the managing proprietor of the line who kindly conducted us to the "American House" wheie ho had engaged rooms for us. At the door wo met our old acjuainiance J. Oottrcil, the pro-pi ietor of the "American House." Well 8 a bd GQ a- tr1 2SJ ji OFFICIAL PAPER OF THE CITY AND COUNTY.

KEIILER. 'S'Jie fierce Xciiocraeie. In the Disti ists in New York City 4th 5th, 8th and Oth where the Democratic party always' and where all they have to do is to select their candidate he is sure to be elected the Democrats haye exhibited their peculiar taste for standard bearers by ttting in nomi. respectively, S. S.

Cox, a renegade politician from Ohio, of the bitterest copperhead proclivities; John Alorrisey, the noted prize fighter, gambler and sporting gentleman James Brooks, of the New York J-Jjvrcss, a great Know Nothing in the day cf the dark-lantern party, and formerly a Whig; and Fernando Wood, the great financial filibuster, and Whilon, apologist the Governor of Georgia for tho detention of armies in transit through New rork to the rebel States in 1861. These are the representative men put forward by the democracy in their strongholds where tl.y can elect whomsoever they please to noci'cate! And these are all ardent sup-portci," "my policy," of course. Let weak-bao'i Republicans who are inclined to support At dy Johnson's plan of restoration, look wel' it these standard bearers while they old ti.ero at arm's length, and study carefully the? characteristics of the clique which will bold them in a death hucr. Manhattan. Riley Kansas, October 15th, 1SGG. Editors Free Press may call to mind that in a former letter I promised to give you a description of tho Big Blue Valley as soon as a contemplated visit to Marysville was over. The time I selected was on the occasion of the Marshall and Washington County Fair. On tho morning of the Oth wo took a scat in Bollinger Ileasly's hack, which runs past our homo from Marysville to Manhattan, we had a cloudless sky, and a clear and bright sun.

We whirled along at a rapid rate and reached the Randolph Station at Fancy Creek in time for dinner. Here is one of the best farms in tho country which was pre-empted years ago by the family; a large field of hundreds, perhaps a thousand acres is enclosed. Air. Henry Condray, has lately erected a large frame steam saw and grist mill. A post office is also at this place.

I thought beforo leaving homethat I would give a description of the valley, but if I would describe one mile that would be all that is necessary as tho whole valley presents a monotonous but enchanting appearance. Somc of tho best farms I ever saw can be seen in this valley, but one thing is to be deplored, the farmers are nt planting orchards, yet this valley Iras been settled for years. One object I bad in vfew was to canvass for the sale of my grapevine roots. All appeared to understand tho importance of fruit but excused themselves upon tho ground that they had no place-fenced, in which to plant them. I however found a number of persons who intended to send ido orders for vines' this Nashville, Oct.

24. A conflagration took place this morning at 3 o'clock, destroying one million dollars worth of property, involving the Banner office, a large drug house, Zaryan tc Billiard Houses of Ilaslock with similar houses, law offices and private apartments. Fire not checked until 3 o'clock thjs morning; it destroyed all South Front Cedar Street, from Sherney to Printer's Alley, extending through to Deaderick Street. Morse's photograph Gallery, well known to the Army of the Cumberland, was entirely consumed. A man sleeping up stairs broke his leg by leaping to the street.

A number of Nashville land marks are gone. Indianopolis, Oct. 24. The Journal of this morning feels justified in saying that Gov. Morton will not be a candidate for Presidential honors in 186S, and does not wish to be placed in the category of aspirants.

With feeble, foul, or corrupted blood, you cannot have health with that life of the flesh healthy, you caunot have scrofulous disease. Root Co', Lkhowirg the refined taste of our old friend Cottrell, we were prepared for something nice, and on entering tne parlor we found a lady playing on a musical instrument and on looking around wc must confess we were somewhat surprised at the richness of the carpet and furniture as well as the splendid and costly paintings that adorned the walls of the room. This cf course would be expected in a large city like Atchison, but on the verge of civilization where a few years ago nothing on this broad expanse was to be seen except the wild bufFalo and his still wilder- pursuer, I must confess such taste and refinement I was not prepared to see. A hot supper, as good as I ever partook of, soon drove the night chilliness away and prepared me for a sound sleep and a walk to the fair grounds the next morning, about which I will tell you in my next.
