Mason did himself honor, even sui prising his- friends, by his apt speech in presenting the name of W. Peu kins to the convention at Ft. Scott. If we must be represented by a Dem ocrat this term we would prefer John R. GoODlN to any Democrat we know Political Ilonestr.

Editor Republican: Many persons seem to be possessed with the idea that everything is fair in politics. That trickery, deceit and equivocation, are legitimate and fair means by which to achieve party success, or to promote ones own personal aspira tions. Men, who, in the ordinary affairs of life are esteemed as truthful, honest, and reliable, frequently become notorious tricksters and entirely unreliable when seeking political elevation. Is this right? Are men who so conduct themselves to be trusted in any public capacity I think not. I believe the welfare of any party, in a great measure depends upon the honesty, truthfulness and integrity of the pub lic representatives of that party those I mean, who are selected to serve it in an official capacity, A candidate, for any position, who sinks so low as to forget any public or private pledge, who pursues a course of political or personal duplicity who ma ligns and blackens the character of his competitors, or who seeks to sow seeds of discord to gratify personal hate and petty vindictiveness that man is not worthy of the party's confidence and support.

It ia a lack of honesty that rains the character of both men and parties, and the past has well and truly proven it. The people have been cursed with political shysters and have no further use for them, but do beed the services of men, as party representatives, who are honest, true, and reliable in politics, as well as in the ordinary avoeations of life. Straight Republican. Letter From Alton, Alton, III. Juae 19th, 187G.

For Ilemter cf Congress Second District. Butlley C. Haskell, Of "Lawrence. BAXTER'S SLEDS. We want all mankind to understand tbat Baxter Fprinr, ha come to that point in her hittory where she is layinj: antie the solemn melancholic style of the past, and putting on the airs of youthful and vigorous-community.

Nv helots there are some things yet that the proiriis trade of the city demands, ami which we commend to men of means and energy, who are thinking of malting a home in the west. We want very adly, built up by the E. R. track, i warehouse competent to meet the neces itteof our agricultural commerce. If pucu a building were erected it would at ftnee receie a patronage that would be cry profitable.

More corn and wheat Uiigtit be ahir ped this point than any on the line of the Gulf Road. More erain wonh.l be 'stored than ia older countries-, because cf the lack of pran ry Luiliii)p9 on our farms. while a constant market and a price governed by that of the great cities, in- tead of the fluctuating basis of a little town's PupplJ and demand, would en courage our farmers not only to raise more grain, but to bring it to thia poiut for sale. We hope soon to see some nbstantial man taking hold of this mat ter in earnest. Another necessity of our city is the bridging of Spring River.

The valley of our valley of our river is unsurpassed in fertility by any valley in the west "We are personally acquainted with the Neoeho. the Cottonwood, the Maiias- nes Cynes, the Verdigris, and the Fall river vallies. and we are quite positive that neither of thetu excels the Sprioji river valley. Rut the crossing of the river is a very serious impediment in the trans, portatlon, and so, of course, in the raising of crops. From many of the farms tributary this place it costs, for a large part of the year from ten to fifteen cents more to market a bushel of corn or wheat than it would if the river was bridged and the roads in the bottom properly built.

While the value of such an improvement to the lead and black, jack interest, could hardly be computed. A bridge across Spring River would pay for itself in three years and be of constantly increasing sertice till worn cut. A nether necessity of the town, is a little moro vim and energy infused into tur business tho direction of the outside world know what the resourses of this conatry are. There is to town in the state of Kansas that combines so many sources of permanent prosperity as ours. Rut these resources of wealth need to be developed.

Theyon-Ty can be developed by men of means and enerwy. Men of tbii kiud are always looking for locations in the west, but are attracted to those sections whose Cf. oral characteristics are most desira. tie iu their minds, and their minds are always icfluenced by the reports they T.tar. -Kansas as a state is startling the world at the Centennial, but Cherokee Couuty has nothing to say.

We are glad to believe that our citizens are even now taking a trowing iuterest iu tibia matter There are other things too that we regard as necessary to the proper grawth of Raster. And we hope to refer to them in the future. The egotism of the press has long been the for ridicule and jest. Indeed we confers onrselfto have been often amused and sometimes irritated at the sell assumed superiority of many editors of count ry newspapers. Rut for pure, unadulterated cheek, for unalloyed, consummate egotism, for un uii.v.

and superfluous self conceit, commend us to the Chetopa Herald. The Herald is published near the Cherokee County line in Labette County. It has a dozen (more or less) subscribers in Cherokee County, and from that basis it very condescendingly consents to advise the heathen Cherokeea how to run their political affairs, whom to elect to office and sa on. The "lesrns that lion. J.

R. IIallowkll of Baxter Springs, is be- ing strongly importuned by his many friends to become a candidate for State Senator in Cherokee county. Indeed 1 Strange as it may appear, we Cherokces hate known it long ago and, what may be stranger yet to the Herald, the Col. has consented to allow "his many friend' to present his name. When ihe proper time comes the Republican will present him to the people of Cherokee countv and the Republican voters will tend him up to Topeka.

"It seems to us a better selection rould not be made." We are glad of it. HAMMATT, t. Clerk Supreme Court. G. W. Franklin as sheriff, brought suit against Labette county for over one thousand dollars alleged to be due him as millage on tax warrants which he had filled to collect.

The District Court, a protem Judge presiding, decid ed in favor of plaintiff, and the case was carried to the Supreme court by Wil. lard Davis, County Attorney of Labette and the decision has just been rendered in favor ot the people. We commend its perusal to our coun ty Commissioners, and congratulate La betta county on having an attorney like Willard Davis. The Pleasanton Observer is after Mr, Snoddt with a red hot poker for claim ing an outrageous fee as an attorney, It says "lie did not file a single paper court he did nothing more than consult with the managers or tneir attorney and for this, having the opportunity, he took six hundred and twenty jive dol- Well, what of it Does'nt the "law allow it and the court award it?" Shaw, of Johnson, J. II. Lawhead, of Rourbon. PaoF' Mudge has shown his common sense by refusing to become a candidate for State Superintendent of Pub-he Instruction on the Temperance ticket and we understand that a committee empowered to fill vacancies, has substituted Sir. Cyrus W.

Harvey, our Cherokee County Nursery man. The citizens of Fremont Ohio, the residence of Gov. Hayes, gave him a reception on the 24th, which excelled in grandeur any manifestation ever held in the city. If old Sandusky county don't go Republican this time she oughtf to be towed across the lake and annexed to Canada. Robert Dale Owen was married last Saturday to Miss Lottie Walton.

We do not know whether Miss Lottie is a materialized spirit or not, but it seems to us, that Robert is wiser now than when he was hugging Katie King and thought she was a Spook. England is very energetically sending men, nr. nit ion? of war and war vessels to strengthen her posts in the east. II er operations indicate that the shock that is bound to come is close at hand. There is no new phase of the subject now iu a political way however.

In making nominating speeches at Cincinnati, Mr. seems to have won most renown; while in short speechifying referring to the conduct of the convention our own T. wight Thatcher seems to have made the most telling hits. We understand that non. II.

W. Cook, of Wyandotte was stricken with mental aberration last Saturday. The strain upon his nervous system in his late canvas for congressional houors is the supposed cause. All the "dissatisfied Republicans" are satisfied now that we will have a pure and honest administration, and are enlisting, and wheeling into line under the banner of Hayes and Wheeler, By the election of Mr. Sailer of Ohio as Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon.

J. Ii. Goodin becomes chairman of the committee on Public Lands. The nomination of D. C.

A R. Smith Tilden nominated on second bal lot. S. C. HENDERSON.

The campaign is now fairly begun. The relative merits of the different candidates will form an exhaustless fund for speeches, letters, covcrsa-tioas and editorials. We confess sorry that Tilchjn has received the nomination at St. Louis We would have preferred to huve the eampaign conducted without the personal vindictiveness that is now inevitable. With a Democratic can didate of spotless integrity, like Hayes, the campaign would have been simply a canvass of principles represented by either party.

But the determination of the Republicans to present a man whose record obviated the necessity of a defence, seems not to have controlled the Democrats. Mr. Tilden is the best man the Democrats could have nominated to ensure the success of Hay es. If there was any question before as to the election of Hayes, the nomination of Tilden has assured it.
