do not cjuat as Liberals, but as Republican.1?, those wh endorse the principles of, and are working with, the Republican p-rty. So we repeat the number "about six." We do cot imply that members are received "on proba tin," nor d-nv them the privilege cf "cir-ressi jz their for offi cers I3at wc do object to bavin those professedly out side tho es eumo to dictate to the pirty the course to be pursued, Especially do we object to the course of sonio straight re publicans who urge these very out siders for official position for tlit expressed pur-jwse of getting them into the RepuYfan ranks. They say they left tha party on account of its corruption; now let them prove their devotion purity by returning when the party baa purified itself. We are willing and eager to receive them as brethren equals, but not as dictators or loaders. Wo refer ia these remarks to those who do not know now whether they oro Republicans or not, not those who aro and have been for the yet year more or working with US.

We hate na ''offences" to "condone." These men are not our children or out wards. They owe us no allegiance and eouio of them freely tell us they will never acknowledge any unless we accept their dictations and nominate themselves for office. The duty of all Republicans is ta Bee to it that the party pursues a straight forward honest policy with straight forward honest leaders. We should prefer such a course and defeat rather than an equivocal course and victory, for a stultified victory is tho most humiliating of defeats. SKITIiLDUGGSalY IXBAXTESl.

Our citizens were thrown into a state of considerable excitement last Saturdays by the rumor that the members of the School Board of this city had disbursed three hundred dollars of the school fund amongst themselves. It was well known that these gentlemen had pledg ed themselves to perform the duties of their offices without remuneration, in consideration of tha low state of our city finances. The people bad considered it iin propter to pay the school board one th ird of a entire revenue for holding twelve evening sessions, and demanded in convention, previous to nomination, that these men pledge themselves to serve without pay. To this demand thesa gentlemen acceded, and in the casa of Mr. Mato, this agreement was used as a chief argument for his ro election.

These gentlemen have repeatedly af Ifirmod that they ware working for noth -5ng, and the fact that the contemptible business was le to the last part of the last meeting of the board, aud kept se'eret nearly a month after its com-iission, is proof that they very well tmdersiood the nature of the transaction. We understand that Mr. Cabuth who was not present at meeting and had bo intimation of such a question being -enin and also Mr. Willarp, since the meeting have refused to accept their part of th? pluudcr and so demonstrated their houesty and exprossed their disapprobation oi the act, in which, we aro confident they are joined by every lion, fst citizen cf Baxter. On the night of the 18th, inst. quite a serious affair happened among a party of youhg men who the night previous had gathered together all the bells horns and pot lids to be found and gave their friend Daniel Martin a grand ssr enade, all because Daniel, tired of living alone, had taken to himself a wife. course the boys must be treated, and Daniel responded quite liberally with the ready cash. No store being near they waited until the next day and then went over to Smithfield to celebrate the happy event of the day previous. Bad whisky had its usual effect, and on the way back home these warm hearted friends of the day previous, fell out and quarreled and iougnt.

YV uiie passing through the field L. Whittington, dispute arose between Deck Hulbert and James McGuire concerning a hat tha one of the party Lad lost. The party who had lo3t it, accusal Dave Whitting ton of hiding it in hia father's hay stack close at hand, and swore that if he didn't return it he would burn the hay. The hat was not returned from the simpl fact that Whittiugton knew not where it was. The threat was executed and the hay burned.

Several of the party drew revolvers and for a while things looked desperate, but happily no shot were nred. Uunnar the excitement Hulbert armed only with nature's weapons got up a little fight of their own. Perhaps no serious damage would have been done, had cot bad whisky, which is always around on such occasions, took possession of the body of Dave Whittinaton, and propelling him forward, seized a club, and struck II ui bcrt with great force oa the head. The blow ended the fight and the rest of the boys thinking that Hulbert was dead ran off with all speed. The physicians say that it is almost impossible for him to recover.

Whittington left immedi ately and has not been heard from since A peculiar sect of religious fanatic located themselves near Thurman, New ton couaty Missouri, last winter. Among their peculiarities were these They claimed to be able to cure all manner of disease. Not with patent medicines or doctor's prescriptions, but by prayer, the annointment of the body with oil, and the laying on of bands. Several times during the winter they were visited with a Pentecostal shower, and claimed to be able to speak with other tongues and perform as many wonders and miracles as did the disciples on the memorable day of Pentecost. On such occasions the confusion was great, aud we gentiles were unable to understand a word they said, although they' assured us, they understood each other perfect ly.

They called themselves the true followers of Jesus Christ. A few weeks ago, their leading man had a revelation that he and his sister must bid adieu to the flinty hills of Misuri and try their fortunes, and preach their religion to the peaceful dwellers en the beautiful prai ries of Kansas. They set out at once. On ccmh to the banks of Shoal Creek they fount! its waters so swollen that they were unable to effect a crossing. Stranga say tha waters did not divide and allow them to pas3 over dry-shod.

Night camicg on they took refuge in the house of Sir. Cntr'll who lives on the south bank of thd ereek. A correct account of each person's trading is kept and purchaser's checks given to correspond. In the month we have been doing business we have 200 names on our books. The sales have'been near 800. We sell at about the same prices as other groceries do, aiming to return surplus profits in dividends. Have sold four corn planters, fourteen cultivators and two sewing machines, in four weeks.

Our trade ia strictly groceries and provisions and implements and is cash. We ask no credit and give none. Our patrons are upholding the stora with a very few And it has given an impetus to the order that we would not have had otherwise. New granges are organizing and petitions coming in all the time. But three things are necessary: Confidence, co-operation and cash, and unless you can secure this yoa had best leave tho matter alone.

Respectfully, Jas. Burns, Aent. Those Liberals- Editor liepuhlican: In a recent issue, under tha caption of "The Liberals of Cherokee County," there were some statements made, which I think aro incorrect. In the first place you underestimated the strength of the liberals, numbering theai at the ridiculous figure six; whereas we know there are at least two or three' hundred, including in their numbers some of the purest and most talented men in the county. Again, you alluded to them in such a manner, as to imply that they were to be received into the Republican party, only on a probationary State, or in other words, to vote the Republican icket without having the privilege of exposing their wishes as to whom should the nominees of that party.

In these premises, we think you are ia error. We c'dieve that the Liberals for the most part, from conscientious taitiye and from a sole desire for reform, They were not false to Republican pjrincipks, bus enemies to the policy of tha prefect administration. They foolishly, were frightened at the cry of Cacsarism" and "Third and suffered this fright to blind their beUer judgment How true thee are, may be seen from tho posit-uu thfy now hold.
