On Sunday evening a shooting matinee took place in the south part of which, tor the number of shots fired arAl the small amount of damage mythiug we have known of recently. The cause of the shooting, from what we iave been able to learn, seems to have been bail whisky too freely imbibed by Hugh Cowan. Hugh had some misun derstanding with Billy Barnes, at Nell Boxler's, a house of questionable ivput on Vine street, between Columbus and Joplin and Billy closing the door on'- II ugh, the latter piu a bullet tn rough it, md rode off. Barnes followed, and. in the rear of Sam's Hall caught up with Cowan, who turned and drew his pistol on him.

At this juncture, Nate Whitson and Win. Hacker appeared on the scene ancf commenced firing on Cowan, who, see ing that they were too many for him, lit out for Galena, where it is sai lie re-' oaded hi revolver and returned to Em-ure City. Meeting Barnes, who was all the time unarmed, he made him shake Kinds with him. Barnes friends then made an attempt to capture Cowan, b-ut ic was on the alert and again spurred lis horse towards Galena. 2s ear Mr.

Wilson's store he accidentally dropped his pistol and before ccuhl recover it; Barnes got possession of it and fired two' shots at him. This ended the shooting. md Cowan returned to his home at the Baker diggings. Ten or fifteen shots were fired but none took cflcct. On Monday Cowan was arrested and brought before Judge Wilson, who at-' sessed a line of $50 and costs, which paid.

Win. Hacker, Billy Barnes, Chas. Speers and Nate Whitson were also ar rested on the charge of carrying con cealed weapons, and their trial set for" to-day. Such occurrences especially on the Sabbath day, are very detrimental to the welfare of any community, but so long as whisk-, pistols and powder arc' manu factured and sold (which will be until lhe end ol time) we may expect to hear of the occasional enactment of similar" scenes to that witnessed on our streets last Sunday. Deputy Marshal of some notoriety, who followed the desperado, Jim Barker, lor four years for the purpose of capturin him, and was one of the party that finally succeeded in killing him, recently, in the Indian Territory. We learn that Rose Guy. a prosti tr.tc, who formerly stopped on Short Creek and whose parents are now resid ing here, attempted to shufnVi oft this mortal coil, at her present stopping place in Baxter Springs, on Saturday night last, by taking morphiue, but the timely arrival of a physician llustrateJ her pur pose.

This is the second attempt she has made upon her life. In regard to an item in the Joplin Herald some time since, to the effect that Mike Clary's cattle story was a little "too thin," and that it was possible his trip into Newton county, was for the purpose of finding Jesse James, Mr C. requests us to say ho has not lost any Jesse James, and that if the Herald has any cattle to sell, and thinks he is not a competent judge of bovines, it might be to its advantage to strike a bar gain with him. It is a mystery how men can fall fif ty or a hundred feet and sustain little or 110 injury, jet it is nevertheless a fact. On last Saturday, as Ike Todd was standing on the platform over a shaft at the Baker Diggings, it gave way, precipitating him to the bottom some fifty feet His friends expected him to be killed out- jight, but his injuries were slight.

Also on Tuesday last, at Joplin, Bill Lunkin fell 90 feet to the bottom of a shaft, ant when hoisted to the top was able to Svalk home. On Saturday night about 11 o'clock while Mr. Spencer Cooper, of Galena was absent from home, his house was en tered by two men, one a negro, who tied a handkerchief over Mrs. Cooper's mouth and then proceeded to ransack tlie house but failing to find any money, they tool a suit of clothes and departed. They were evidently old hands at the business as they acted so quietly that a domestic sleepiug in an adjoining room, knew nothing of the affair until called by Mr Cooper after the thieves had lelt.

Mr Cooper came home in about half an hour atter, and immediately on learning wha had happened, summoned Marshal Nors worthy and the two made a diligent seaeh about town but could get lib trace of the robbers.
