Some of our business men, after working THE COSMOS FRIDAY MORNING, JAN. 1, 1886 COUNCIL GROVE, MORBIS COUNTY, KAN Matrimonial Matters. Below we give a list of buildings amd improvements in Council Grove, as near as could be ascertained from a diligent research by an emissary of the Cosmos, for the year 1885. It has been a remarkable year for building and improvement and a large number of fine residences ad dwelling houses have been added to the city.

While this speaks wall for our little city we may say that the prospects for 1886 are even more flattering than the -year just closed. Several fine business blocks are talked of, and there is every indication that in the coming year Council Grove will eclipse all former efforts in the building line Presbyterian church 3,500 A. 'Merry Christmas- was appropriately observed by Ihe different Sabbath schools of this city in their respective churches. The Presbyteriau, Methodist and Methodist South Sabbath schools held their merry-makings on Christmas eve.

at each of which places a tree had been arranged. THE PRESBYTERIANS. At the Presbyterian church the exercises were under the management of Superintendent Leedy, assisted by the teachers. Songs and recitations tilled in the eveuiuc: The tree, which was quite a handsome one, was filled with presents for the children, and was brilliantly illuminated with wax tapers. The exercises were interesting and afforded much amusement.

THE jr. E. CHURCir. Here an elaborate program had been arranged, which together with a Christmas tree ladened with a rich treat for the children, furnished a most delightful evening's entertainment. M.

E. CHURCH SOUTH. At this chrrch a treat very similar to that prepared for the children at the other churches was given. There were some very pleasant exercises followed by the distribution of presents, the occasion being enjoyed by old aud young. CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH.

The exercises at the Congregational church took place on Christmas night, in the presence of a larjre audience. The order of exercises consisted of songs and recitations. At a given signal ''St. Nicholas" arrived in a sleigh drawn by reindeers, and commenced the distribution of a treat, much to the delight of the children. There were also presents from Hie teachers to each of their scholars.

The occasion was one of pleasure and enjoyment to JJAITIST CHURCH. The Baptist Sabbath School held its entertainment on Christmas night, and the attractive programme prepared called out a crowded house. A pleas-aut evening was spent, as the exercises were very interesting, and the treat thoroughly enjoyed by the young people. Noting the immense growth of the state of Kansas, its increasing wealth and prosperity, and with it the demand for a better class of goods suitable to the improved condition of the people, we have tried to suppty this want by opening in the city of Emporia, Lyon county, Kansas, a retail dry goods house, such as you can only find in the larger eastern cites. We have built the house fortius business, and have a corner 50x100, two stories high.

The lower iloor is filled from top to bottom with Dress Goods in all the finer grades, black and colors, and in all the new materials Silks, plain and brocaded, "in all qualities and shades; also a full stock of other goods, including woolens and and cloth; Hosiery in the finest grades. The center shelves on both sides are filled with an exquisite selection of Fancy Notions, Laces, Trimmings and Buttons. The rear 40 feet of our first lloor is devoted to the Mil-linerv, where we have the choi-cest millinery west of Chicago. Our upper lloor is stocked full with Carpets in all the different styles of Tapestries. Ingrains, Velvets, Moquets, Bodies and Wiltons Rugs bv the hundred; Oil Cloths and Curtains, in Lace and Silk.

The front 50 feet is the Cloak room, where we have the largest stock of cloaks in the west. Our Plush, Seal and Brocaded garments are the finest goods manufactured. When you conn to the city call in and see us. If vou can't come, send a letter, and we will send you sample of anything' you want. STRAUSS The Daylight Dry Joous House, COR.

SIXTH MERCHANT STREETS, about thirty-six hour a day for a year, nev- vr leavin? their stores for a moment's re creation, wonder why it is that malarial fevers knock them off their feet occasionally. The truth is a man is a machine, and he can't stand constant wear and tear without oiling up. Rest and recreation is oil to the machine. A little more rest, and fewer doctor's bills, would be a good thing. Let this be one of your new year's resolutions.

SIX MILE SCRAPS Stock is wintering well. Our school has a long holiday, as the teacher was called very suddenly to Council Grove last week. It seems warm enough to plant corn. Farmers are still plowing, some are through and will now wait for spring. The protracted meeting is over, and there were a number of conversions.

Rev. T. J. Pearson is now holding a series of meetings at the Congregational church below here with good success. Squire Downing wants another dog, as the one on hand is getting old and can't kill coyotes and prowling dogs any more.

Would not Kansas be better off if it had a good dog and cockle bur law. Some old farms have gone to cockle burs to the detriment of all around them. Our new town is not yet laid out, and from the signs of the times it is rather hard to locate the exact point, but anyone wishing to tafc-3 a ride on the train from this part, either east or west, can get on the train at the town site west of Mr. Kingman's. All that is necessary is to wave a red handkerchief and the train will stop and take you on, and if you are going to Council Grove just pay 55 cents and you will be landed at the depot in Council Grove in good shape and on good time.

While making no pretensions toward getting up an elaborate paper this week, the Cosmos, nevertheless, presents its readers With a fine array oi city and county statistics, and an interesting chronology of the iniportaut local events of the year.
