There will be a teachers examination held in Council Grove, the last Saturday in October, commencing at 9 o'clock a. m. A. G. Campbell, County Sup't.

The streets of Salina and Abilene will soon be illuminated bv an electric light. A grand jurv has been called in Dickinson, ami it is said that Abilene is almost depopulated. In Ottawa county the liquor sales average 700 monthly. In Saline county, with 1.000 more inhabitants, the sales run up to 5,000 a month. Sheriff of Dickinson county, arrested a horse thief one day last week at Abilene, by the description given on a postal card received by the sheriff over a year ago.

The euterprisiu proprietors of the Marion licqister are issuing a neat six column daiiv during the campaign called the Hitter. It is newsy and fetrikes squarely from the shoulder. We understand that one evening this week several sleepy church-goers were aroused from their dreams by the minister stopping in the middle of his discourse and sharply tapping a call bell. Mr. S. II, Fairfield, of Alma, has decided that he will not again be a candidate for the office of Register of Deeds of Wabaunsee county. He has continuously been in office in Wabaunsee county "since 1856, and has been Register of Deeds since 1870. We have a pumpkin and a squash at our office that would make two pretty good hog pons if they were tunneled out.

The squash weighs 82 pounds and the pumpkin '88 pounds. They were grown by Stephen Shipley, of Wilson township, and were sent to us last Thursday. Marion Register. Junction City has maintained for years a Ladies' "Reading Club. The members to the number of thirty lately visited the Literary League at Abilene, where the ladies had a banquet, toasts, speeches, music, a drive around town, a literary session, and a visit to the District Court then in session and a reception in the evening.

The testimony in Mrs. Walkup's trial so far reveals the fact that the lot of the late Mr. Walkup as a newly married inaii was anything but a happy one. He had, according to his wife's statement, gone into training to shoot himself. A suspicion seems to have entered his mind that there is no fool like an old fool.

The trial, while it Will undoubtedly end in Mrs. Walkup's acquittal, will tend to throw discredit on New Orleans as a matrimonial market, and will teach middle-aged Kansas widowers discretion. Champion. The wheat crop of this county is an acknowledged failure for this sea-sou, bnt the poet says "Of all the crops the farmer raises, Or capital employs. None bring such comfort and such praises, As crops of girls and boys." And Dickinsou county is the banner county for this crop.

Mr. and Mrs. John Koening, of Garfield to wnship, were in town the other day with their sixteenth child. Abilene Reflector. KELSO KERNELS.

Gathering corn seems to be the busiucss of the farmer. Mrs. J. Carr has just completed his barn, which, is one of the largest in this Vicinity. Go to Mr.

Sterne's to get your boots and shoes; he has the best stock that has ever been brought to this place. Mr. M. Lambert has erected a barn on the property he bought of Will Munkres; and he will take possession in the spring. Mr.

G. Kahl seems to be very busy Weighing wheat and corn. He is paying the large sum of 20 cents per bushel for corn. 15ase ball still in the lead. We had an Interesting game here last Saturday; Mr.

II. Moore did some lino catching behind the bat. Mr. Kahl is just recovering from a severe ppell of sickness. Ha had a large crop of apples this year which he has just finished gathering.

Dr. Campbell was here last week to visit our school, with which he spent most of the day. lie addressed the school in the evening in a very interestiDg mauner. Maxley, Times are getting easier with the farmers, as is evidenced by the continuous stream of wagons loaded with lumber going into the country, and the new and better quality of farm buildings going up. The shell of a house that the farmer's fam ily shivered through the winters in while he was "paying out" on his land, is being finished up and large additions built thereto, and the hay sheds that but scantily protected his stock from the bleak winds, are being replaced with substantial frame or stone barns.

The farmers on the old Kaw Jlcservc are just now passing the boundry between lrontior and civilized life in a word, are just beginning to live. Iuilaj Eights'" Aero Farm For Sale.
