I shall relate this incident as nearly as I can, precisely as it occurred, even to the names being undisguised; for thirty years have passed. It affected me profoundly, and, if I can relate It as it stands in my memory, investing it with some of the interest it had that night, it will perhaps be worth the writing and the reading.

It was a Sunday night in winter in the only upstair office of the old Cen DO YOU WANT TO BORROW MONEY On improved farms on long time at low interest? We can put you "next" to 5 per cent money with small commission. Geo. Har-man, Valley Falls. MKBMIiiraMwMMsaaM ot the crowd gathered around the great stove, but uttering no word, The principal speaker was John McArdle, the largest buyer that came to the yards, and as handsome a man in his travelling garb as, I think, I ever knew. He was easily the magnate of the yards a black-eyed, black-haired, athletic man in his prime; bright, handsome and fastidious in his dress, and, by virtue of his aggressive though hearty and winning personality, a favorite.

I remember how like a Spanish grandee, with his rich clock over his shapely shoulders, and his rimless sealskin cap, he used to come swinging down the stockyard streets, the admired of the stockyard habitues after a week's buying, aggregating often nearly a hundred thousand dollars, homeward bound for the train. It can easily be imagined the peculiar favor in which he was generally regarded, and, to add to his power, he was genial with all, overflowing with life and with keen Celtic wit. This night the conversation had drifted insensibly to the rare subjects of life and death and religion. McArdle was an outspoken unbeliever, and this had pained and startled me strode leisurely 01 again, his bands clasped as before, his face serene and stern in strong conviction, "I have given it all much thought I am growing old. Men do this matter of Christianity, like they do the sun they never face it.

They look away from it, they butt along, and, first thing they know, they've lived their chance out and have spurned the Hand and the hope that should have been the most precious thing, by far, in all their lives. "Why, there's no reason at all in anything, McArdle, if Christianity Isn't true. Think a little deeply, men, just for a minute or so. Why do we live at all? What are we here for? Why do we suffer? Why do we love? Why do we remember? Who do we hope? Why are we so weak -and yet capable of deathless affections and aspirations worthy of an unending life? Look at that hand of yours, man with the joints hinges in every finger the nails of armor the finger ends, the thumbs set opposite to give the grip. D'ye think that happened? "Everything in the world, if you stop and take nwtice, has been made with the most consumato wisdom for ing to make the world better and brighter and turn the awful failure this life would be with just misery and death finishing up every life, into triunphant victory.

"Now, don't interrupt me. You promised you wouldn't This at a moment as though McArdle were about to speak. McArdle nodded that he would remain silent, and several said, "Go ahead" He made another measured trip across the floor and resumed. "Now I grant there are hypocrites I don't care one rap whether you pronounce Beecher guilty or not. This is the point I want you to see: It is perfectly wonderful that there aren't a hundred hypocrites among the preachers where there's one.

Did you ever think of it Christianity is the easiest, pleasantest thing to counterfeit in the world. And it's the surest of winning. It isn't now like it was at the start; it's respectable, at least. You don't have to die for it like they did at the start. It has won.

All that a scoundrel has to do, if he has a glib tongue, is to put on the cloak of Christianity and play Christian to nerfection and it's a sure success. My bookeeper, Casper Reimer, who was himself also somewhat of a "freethinker'', I remember, sat on his high chair directly facing me atthe other side of the double desk at which we both worked, and several times I felt rather than saw his eyes stealthily noting me, showing that he too was deeply interested in the subject upon which McArdle was delivering himself with considerable warmth. McArdle disbelieved the Bible utterly, or, rather, he considered it merely a mass of legends and lies. He consid God something to serious life's too full of trouble and sorrow, death too certain; the human heart's somehow too weak and tender to make playing the hypocrite, and preaching, comfortable and congenial work.
