2 THE FIRST FRIEND THE MEMORIAL FUND. Shall a memorial to a departed loved one be a granite monument in a seldom visited cemetery, a stained glass window, or a public building built and operated for some general or special use? All of these have their uses, but we think the "Working Memorial" is the "more excellent way." On page one is a self explanatory announcement of what we hope will become an approved way of remembering our beloved dead who were benevolent while living. It is simply this Instead of erecting a single building let the memorial funds be so used as to utilize the countless institutions of society already established and successful and which are available without a penny of. actual cost. The Society, in using this fund to aid those who need its help and who are most needy of all, by using the institutions of society already established, can help many more people than under the older ways and thus do vastly more good with the same amount of money.

That it is less conspicuous than the others we grant but we claim it is more in accord with the charge of the Master to "let not your left hand know what your right hand doeth." It is purely and wholly a "working memorial" and accords most fully with our highest ideals, which pronounce that the best memorial which does the most good to the largest number of the most needy. Those who respond to this idea and desire further information will please address Rev. E. A. Fredenhagen, General Superintendent, 41 Crawford Tope'ka, or 506 Kansas City Life Kansas City, or any authorized representative of the Society.

This quarter is showing an increase in the number of men coming to us for assistance. Opportunities for employment have also increased. In pursuance of the plan for the organization of County Jail Committees over the Districts we have added to the growing list one for Wyandotte County. Such a committee is of the greatest importance in this county. The size of Kansas City, Kansas, and its.

adjacency to Kansas City, necessarily means a considerable number of arrests during the year and therefore a large local responsibility resting upon our Society, to whom the way of opportunity opens. We have been most fortunate in securing as that committee Judge Wm. G. Holt, Willard Merriam, and S. M.

Miller, with C. L. Brokaw, member board of directors, and your Superintendent, members of the committee ex-officio. Judge Holt, Mr. Merriam, and Mr.

Brokaw are known to every one. Mr. Miller, who is in the employ of the government, has had much experience in work with young men. He has given much personal assistance in our work during the last year, and has shown a great talent for assisting our men. As secretary of the committee, he has direct charge of the jail services, and the relief work of the committee.

We are most fortunate in the personnel, and their work will greatly increase the efficiency of our Society. Our men are making about the usual average, and some of them' are doing particularly well. One of them who came in very poor health has, by his persistence and skill become manager and part owner of a profitable business. The people of the town generally know that he is an ex-prisoner, A TRUE PICTURE.
