E. S. Jones, of Ohio, was elected superintendent of" he city schools to take the place of superintendent Sinclair, who goes toOttowa. Prof Jones ia evidently a "dear" friend of Dr. Hall, who championed his Interests.

The fight was bitter. The people of this city were almost unanimous in their desire to have a Kansas man take charge of the schools, but the ring decreed otherwise. Prof. Jones comes highly recomeudfd as an educator and it is to be hoped that with his coming the "soapfactory" will disappear. Twenty one ballots were aken before a choice was made.

On the twen ty first ballot Andy curry, of the Third ward, who had been voting against Jones, flopped and this gave jones six and prof. Olin, of Osborne, Kansas, four. The final ballot was: For Jones: Hall. Hine, Enders, price, Ball and curry. For Olin: Ilarpsr, Adams, Morgan and pellett.

David Jones, a Negro living near Lolo, in Pittsylvania county died recently from the necessities of life. A neighbor him about eight pounds of beef and the man being so hungry devoured the meat without leaving a scrap, which, caused his death. "Bud Scipio," a Negro of coffeyville, is a physical wonder. He is 19 years old, weighs 180 poHa4B4rlift81800-w jtb ase. He is a wrestler of no mean ability.

Last Tuesday morning he threw a white professional two falls in live minutes. He is training for the ring. There are now 23,530 Negro schools in the south, where Negroes have learned to read, and most of them to write. In the JVegro schools there are 238,000 pupils and 20,000 Aregro teachers. There are 1.50 schools for advanced education, and seven colleges administered by Negro presidents and faculties, and of these presidents three were formerly slaves.
