Convention, Presic-ing Elder and Ucv. Full bright, went to the above named places to hold the 3rd. quarterly meetings which wc are pleased to say, were very successful. We found a fine lookeng intelligent and enterprising class of people most of whom own botli farm and city property and are toiling hand iu hand with the whites to make their towns tho leading ones iu the state, by improving both in wealth, and culture. Both old and young are alive to the church and S.

S. St. John tlio citizens have just completed a very fine couit house and the ainty officers have alrcadv moved into their new quarters. We called on them and found they were a nice set of gentel- T1IK- So far no attention has been given the petition, notwithstanding the fact that the mayor, who is a republican, and tho republican majority in the council, received our support ut the recent city election. Perhaps "us luggers" have no right to complain, but I'll wager that ba-1 a jictition of the same character, signed by a iiumber of German or Irish voters, been presented, the mayor and council would have studied very hard and very carefully 'ere they had thrown it aside or quietly ignored it with a broad grin.

WICHITA, our citizens are even receiving beer in barrels and boxes labeled "glas," han dle with care, A. certain express-mini iu the city was sent to tiie depot for a barrel of potatoes by one of our Avell known citizens a feAV days ago and in Important ITotico to Travelers. "When desiring to go to loading it on to his Avagou tho head of the barrel fell out and out rolled a feAv potatoes aud a two gallon dimcjohu of St. John is certainly a delighfull one for this it will be renicm pored, is in Stafford county. I was pleased to find so many colored men doing business cither on farms or in the city.

As a rule the people are enterprising and I have no doubt when shall bo called to go on the fourth round we will find iu St. John, a neat litltlc church built by tlis united efforts of Rev. 11. L. Biukly whose circuit extends from Hutchinson to St.

John, an earnest effort of tho Presiding Elder Rev. B. F. Watson. Among tlie man good workers iu the church is tho llollis family who have been untiring in their labors for their church.

Hutchinson is also a beautifull placo and some of the grandest peoplo iu the state live there; they have a small church membership and one of the ueatest little churches in the Conference and too much praise cannot bo given to these good people w.th their oaruest pastor and the stewards and trustees assisted by that other good and earnest God tuning and soul stiring man, Local Elder J. W. Hill who is leading the Sunday School. llev. Fullbright.

Tho editor of the "Washington urges that a national convention of color should bo held somo time in tlio next year prior to tho opening of tho campaign to consider tho advisability of creating a sort of Negro Independent Tarty. It is evident from the past and present that if wo expect the same recognition as other nationalities, we must tako a standing position. No side convention of this kind will strengthen the black man ueither in politics or otherwise; let the representative men of the country residing in tho different slates meet the conventions held in their respective states and there nuke a fight for such men as av.11 best represent their pcopl'jinthe various conventions that must bo held before the setting of national convention To say wo will go off to ourselves shows we lack the courage and manhood to meet our white friends and tell them how contemptible they have treated up. The "Globe" is in favor of meeting these men face to face and too to toe, and tell them up and up that we mean business and noth- if if ii KANSAS CITY i and all points either wlnsky. ot.

Rev. Dr. Balgarne, of Gravesend, England, a Biblical ardncoligist iu a recent sermon "the most interesting stone in the Avorld" describes the corner-stone discovered by tho Palestine Exploration Engineers in tho Temple Wall, 14 feet by 3. He says it Avas "rejected by the builders" because of its unmaHagcblc angularity and hardness; but Avas adopted for its place and shaped by order of King Solomon. batt'orSmiL iug else Every fellow more or this city especially, are and always have been thoroughly identified with and supported the republican party.

So well is this fact recognized that at every primary election tho colored vote is canvassed and sought for as earnestly ns if they were "all the sanio as white folks," or a -if tho odor of poteen and "praties" or saur kraut aud lager hung about their persons. But when there are any offices to give, or favors to grant, the race can suck its thumbs and get rendy to help out at another primary or election. Don't understand me as claiming any special privileges for our race as a race at the hands of the republican or any other party. All I. ask is that we be placed upon the same footing as others who have votes to cast and who have a like interest in tho government of the country and the locality in which they live.

But wc arc confronted with the fact that at every municipal, county or state convention of tho republican party in Kansas, and in almost every other northern state, the question always is, Who can we put on to represent the Germans and tho Nothing is said about having the Amerioo-Etho-pian repivsentjd. He is supposed to be happy in the consciousness he can vote and that his vote can and Avill be solicited by his white brother. Beyond that he must be satisfied aud only too glad that ho is permitted to exist. While on subject I desire to revert to the past history of elections in this city and county. When a colored man, fully competent to fill tho position, was put up for councilman in a republican ward, ho was defeated by his own party.

When a colored man of unexceptional character and qualifications was nominated for a county office, although thB county was repub lican by 700 or S00 majority, the poor "Nigger" was left out in the cold. Nobody pretends to say but that the city of Wichita is republican by a large majority, j'ct a man having every qualification was, iiotmany months ago, defeated for a place on the school board, simply because he had the misfortune to have a skin a shade or two darker than the characters of some who by chance perhaps could boast of belonging to the Caucassian race. Tom Adams. The Garfield monument is now finished and in position ut Wsshinglon D. C.

Many avIio have seen it pronounce it Mr. Ward's masterpiece which is saying a great deal in behalf of Ward and the monument, for it must be remembered that he is one of the finest sculptors living and has carv less admires being spoken of as r. smart and intelligent man; such being the case let us meet our white friends and show them what we are: Now two or three days iu a national convention composed entirely of colored men would simply bo a meeting which had adjouned "sine let us attend every mectin held in our respective- cities or towns and make the whites help us elect our delegates to tho state convention and so on to tho national convention. ed a large number of verv fine 'monu There are some men who glory in the failure of others in business; especially is it true among us as a people. No longer than the other day a certain swell a sign of a man didn't have the grit to tell a man what he thought, but sneaked around aud told a young lady to whom he was paying agreeable attention.

This very same sign of a man not over four weeks ago Avas kicking because ins name did not happen to occur in the list with others as door-keeper at an entertainment held at the Baptist church. -At the same time he has never contributed a cent toward the support of tlio paper and besides borrows it to read though he fins a thousand faults with it. Such men as these the quicker they die and go to heaven or some 'other place, the better it will be for the commun.ty iu which they live. you should remember that the in connection with the MO. Iu his left hand ho holds a pamphlet, AVith the corners of the leaves rumpled and turned down. Tho title page i3 inscribed "Statutes of tlio United States." The right baud rests on an octagon pillar half drapped.

The head is up, imparting great energy and vigor to the figure. He that would bo read to-day must so write that lie who runs may read. That is, ho must write plainly and briefly. The writing may bo plain and yet truly picturesque. But tlio pictures must bo simple and vivid rather than elaborate and multitudinous.

Tho labored and long drawn out essay may be of great merit, but not one in a hundred, even among our own intelligent readers, will take the time to read it. This may bo a mournful fact, but it is a fact all the same and should not be forgotten.
