The following regarding the work of the Rev. W. A. Bodell of Madison, who is to begin a series of meetings at the church January 31 will be of interest: Mr. Bodell was one of the principal workers in the great religious campaign in Philadelphia last fall under the leadership of J.

The fact that people rush to a place and spend their money buying high priced meals and beds don't make a town. Whatever may have been the attitude of Nlcodemu3 towards Jesus that certain it is that he became later a secret believer in Him. See John and 19:39.

(2) Jesus Solemn Declaration, v. 3. -This passage is specially significant in that it is the first recorded discourse of Jesus and was delivered to Nicodemns who was a ruler of the Jews and a member of the Sanhedrin. Nicodemus high position as a religious teacher among the Jews and his zeal and devotion to God's law and the Jews religion, did not assure him of "a place in the Kingdom of God. He must be born "again" or from above (marginal reading), as must every one who enters the Kingdom of God.

The fact of the new birth as essential to salvation needs emphasis in this day of liberalism and apostasy. The new birth Is necessary because of corrupt human nature, vs 6 and Rom. 8:7,8. II. The Nature of the New Birth.

If physical birth is necessary to share in physical life, then why should it be thought strange that there must be Spiritual birth to experience spiritual life? V. Under the caption of "Every Man a Square Deal," the Evening Herald, of the 26th, deals out a very scathing article on State Treasurer Kelley, to the effect that he has been loaning out the state's muney to his own financial gain. Whether this is or is not absolutely true, is it not a fact that Mr. Kelley has made no new departure in this matter? Has not Mr. Kelley conducted the office of State Treasurer along the same lines and practiced the same principles of all his predecessors? We think so.

It depends largely upon who the "grafters" are whether or not there is a "howl" coming, and we can see no reason why Kelley should be ripped up the back for doing just what some other people would do if they had a chance. We are not prepared to say whether or not he has been loaning the state's money for his own personal gain, but even if such is the case there is no reason why Mr. Kelley alone should be the victim of shot and shell when there are" no doubt other "grafts" that are being worked continuously, only they have not as yet been brought to public notice. We don't believe for a moment that Mr. Kelley has such a pull with the legislature that he can be instrumental in having that body pass a state depositary law and word it so that it will not do its work for two years to come.

However, we do believe that such a law will be enacted and that Mr. Kelley will be governed by it immediately upon its passage. iter, poor crops, has not xf The Branden apportionment bill passed the House Monday without a dissenting voice. Jesus sacrifice for sin waa The Southern press have been throwing slurs at Governor Hoch because he "treated Booker Washington as a gentleman should another." With reference to these taunts Governor Hoch has this to say: "I treated Booker T.

Washington as one gentleman should another. A man that is doing the great good Mr. Washington is doing is entitled to gentlemanly treatment. It would take a microscope to find the brains of a man who criticised me for what I did and it would take a more power-nil microscope' lo find his heart." Hoch and Roosevelt are constructed just alike in this respect. They believe a good negro is just as much entitled to kind treatment as a good white man.

A terrible "howl" went up all over the South when President Roosevelt entertained Booker Washington, but the president didn't give a whoop for that. He knew he was doing the right thing, so did it fearlessly and the "howl" soon subsided. We say give the negro his just dues. If he is a good citizen honor and respect him as any other good citizen. The Leavenworth Times says there is a row coming among the busters, and that when it does come, the old machine fellows are going with Hoch.

The Times adds in an innocent kind of way that Hoch possibly knows this, aud that is why he is treating the machine fellows so handsomely. Tne Times is sure that the machine men can hold the balance of power right now as between the two factions of the boss busters. All of which indicates that there is fun to give life. Evans, Frank Baughman, Speaker Stubbs has introduced a bill which provides for the abolishment of four state boards, with a membership of fourteen, and put in place of them one board of three members, which would have charge of all the state charitable institutions, the penitentiary, the Hutchison reformatory and the Dodge City soldiers' home. We like Mr. Stubbs' plan of economy, if that is the idea, but it occurs to us that this would be placing too much work and responsibility with just three men. State Printer Clark's enemies are after him on the hot foot. He has been abundantly cared for by the Republican party in this state.

His career very markedly shows the advantage of asking for plenty. He has been a member of the state board of charities, secretary of the state two terms and state printer two years.
