LOCALS. Willie, how was it that the cows drank up that pail of water! Do not make Willie water all the cows in South Lawrence the next time. Miss Lulie Jones received some very fine presents on the anniversary of her sixteenth birthday. We unintentionally omitted to say in our issue of the 10th, that Dr. Seth Vernilla of Topeka called on us, on the 6th.

Come again doctor. What has become of the Boston Leader and the National Witness We have sent exchanges to both of them, but never see anything more of either of them. On account of making room for the essay of Miss Carr this week, we were compelled to leave out some important communications which will appear next week. The father of Mrs. Preston Minor, who we mentioned in these columns a few weeks ago as being very sick, in La Cygne, we are pleased to say is convalescing, and he is now able to sit up.

You ought to see those new caps which came for the telephone band this week. They are dandies. Now help- the boys to complete their uniforms. Come now, a steady pull, then a pull altogether. NOTICE.

The partnership heretofore existing between Gray Hamilton is this day mutually dissolved. W. W. GRAY, NEWTON HAMILTON. Lawrence, April 29, 1883.

A gentleman called at the resi. dence of Rev. H. Johnson of North Lawrence, on the who after receiving a fine suit of clothes and eating a hearty supper, cluded to make his home there. He weighed nine pounds.

Thomas Moore has purchased the barber shop formerly. owned by Mark Anthony; and which the later sold to Mr. W. H. Reed, a few weeks ago.

Mr. Moore purchased this very nice shop from W. H. Reed, J. R.

Johnson is the foreman of the shop. We hope to see it prosper. Prof. W. W.

Jones, Principal of the colored school of Olathe, called on us on the afternoon of the 14th. He will attend the teachers examination which takes place on the 24th. Mr. Jones is a graduate of Wilberforce, and we were pleased to meet him; come again Professor. Bowersock's Opera House is undergoing a course of painting.

It will add greatly to its appearance. Mrs. Hayes of Gunnison, Colorado, is in the city visiting her daughter, Miss Francis Hayes who has for the past two years been in attendance at the High School, in this city. Miss Francis will accompany her mother home, where 'she will spend her vacation, and return and finish her course in the High School in the class of '84. We hope Miss Hayes will spend a pleasant vacation.

The St. Joseph Gazette says: "We are inclined to believe that the Atchison Champion is right in its opinion that the star route jury will return a righteous verdict against the men who are trying to talk them to Oh, you cannot tell anything about what that jury will do. It may disagree and the country still be put to the trouble and expense of selecting another one. There are thousands in it for the lawyers and other fellows who are in any way connected with the case. It is to be hoped, however, that the St.

Joseph Gazette is not mistaken. Dorsey, Brady, and company should not be permitted to stop this side of the penitentiary. We think there has been entirely too much formality about the trial of these men, who have swindled the Government out of 80 much money. "Let no guilty man escape." The Mayor has induced Mr. Prentice to forego his letter of the meeting of the council reappointed him Marshal for a third term.

We have nothing personal against Mr. Prentice, and therefore feel that the element to which he belongs have the right to retain him, while they are in power. We have nothing to ask from this city administration, much less to attempt to dietate its policy. We certainly hope that Mr. Prentice will succeed well, and that the mistakes of the past will be avoided as much as possible.

We shall feel ourselves free to give the Marshal credit where credit is due and also to criticise when We believe he is wrong. We shall do this in the most kindly spirit, and with a view to the good of the public service. It is to be hoped that the city administration will do away with the "Pet" service and do what it can to enforce the laws of the State and city. There may be. some laws upon the statute book, to which the present administration are op posed, but they have no right to single out what particular laws they will enforce, and what particular laws shall remain a dead letter upon the statute book.
