19, 1908. The death of P. D. G. M.

John F. Heady, of D. G. L. No.

17, of the State of of Kans.w. He died Dec. 17, 1908, at 15:50 A. M. arid was buried at his old home at Ottawa, Kansas, John F.

Ready was born in Columbia, Mo, Hfty-five years ego. He came to the State of Kansas thirty-live years ago, where be began to work at the trade of harness making; after serving his apprenticeship he estab lished himself in the business at Ottawa where he remained twenty-live years, and where be withstood all hardships and disadvantages, making for him self a record that will live on and on in the hearts of the men who know him. While attending the meeting of the G. L. at Emporia, in 1905, and addressing the assemblage of fiiends who had gathered to give honors as well as a reception, John F.

Heady was stricken with paralysis, from which he never recovered. When all human skill bad been put forth, bis beloved wife consented to have him sent to the State Institution for the epileptic and paralytic, at Parsons, Kas. District Grand Master, Thomas Glover, whom Bro, J. F. Heady so highly esteemed, delivered the eulogy at the church over the body of him who was the hero of his day and who had kept the faith.

He laid upon the bier a beautiful floral tribute, the design of which was a heart, repre sen tin ir the D. L. G. No. 17, of the State of Kansas.

1. D. G. M. J.

F. Ready was mar ried to Mrs. N. L. Lovette, October 5, 1898, He leaves Ave children, three by his former wife aud two by hfs latter wife.

At the time of his death he was a citizen of Kansas City, where ha conducted a harness shop for himself for six years. As a citizen he was active in all enterprises for the uplift of the race; he was a regular visitor at tne forum each Sabbath eveniug, from which he was elected as a member of a com mittee to wait upon the Governor of the State in regard to the separation of the schools, and his able remarks astounded the Chief of State, who had to admit that never did a man of race speak as he did upon such an occasion. As one that has known and asso ciated with J. F. Ready for twenty-live years as Grand Master of the National Compact of Masons, he has urged upon me time upon time to try to settle the difference between the two factions, our last conversation being in relation to closing this breach, if possible, for the good of man and Mason and the unborn generation.

1 knew him as an Odd Fellow, being at the D. G. 1- when be was elected D. G. M.

at Topeka in 1892, succeeding D. G. M. R. L.

Bradley, of Em uoria. He showed his einciency tor four years, and the D. G. L. succeeded under his management with increase of membership and new lodges.

He devoted bis time to the uplifting of the order. Much of bis time since moving to Kansas City, Kansas, has been with Ibe writer of this history. He was a great man for good, and we were always a unit upon all subjects for tbe good of the order in general, When I presented my proposition for a State burial law, and my constitution supporting the same, he, J. F. Ready, did all be could for its passage, but it was referred back to the lodges for further consideration.

Now, when he was failing 1 was present and at bis side, and the feeling of remorse that came ovtr me after being associated with so brilliant a character for over a 1 century, words cannot express. But I am obliged to say, as Jacob said, Tbe Lord Giveth, and the 1at1 taketh; blessed be tbe name of tbe Lord." When be came to our city I solicited bis membership to tbe lodge of which I was a member then, No. 4894, of which he remained a member until be died. P. M.
