The fee to be paid at the time of entering is 814 for minimum and 18 for double minimum land. If the land is entered at the land office, the homesteader has six months in which to commence residence on the tract, and during that time the entry is not subject io contest.

Before the six months expire, an actual, bona fide residence must be established on trast. Soldiers and sailors in the late war are entitled to deduct the time of service to four years, but they must reside upon the land one year at least. An ex-soldier or Bailor can file upon land through an agent, a soldier's declaratory statement (H. D. which holds the land absolute for six monts. Before the expir ation of the six months the soldier or sailor must appear at the land office in person and put in his homestead papers. This H.

D. S. can be made out in any part of the country, and sent to an agen residing at the land office, An H. D. S.

expires in six months and carries the homestead right with it. but does not interfere with the pre-emption right. Neither a hmeostead nor an H. S. (soldier's, declaratory) can be made of record while the party is residing upon a pre-emption.

A pre-emption riprht can not be used while holding an H. D. or after enter ing and before proving up a homestead. The rights of an ex-soldier or sailor descend to his widow who loses theni. by remarrying.

A single woman taking a homestead and then marrying, does not lose it, but she must reside upon and cultivate it after marriage. If at anv time a horaesieader "abandon" his land for "more than six months," it is open to contest. The above rule is construed liberally Sickness, in the family, and even poverty will greatly milrigate. and possible remove, the difficulties. The whole gist of all the land laws can put 2 two words good faith.

Government lands are not subject to taxes until deeded. THEE CLAIMS Any person entitled to enter other gov-? ernment lands is entitled to take a tree claim of 160 acres regardless of whether the person is holding other lands or not.
