THE DEMOCRAT X. WOOD, Editor. GRANT TURNER, Local Editor. C. E.

Cook, Manager, Hugoton, Kan. -Sand hill Herald. Just as we expected the defunct town of Hugoton is to be sold out ind its deluded people will go down to Macon and try it again. Wonder if they will take their houses down on the line of the Southern Kansas Railroad. Macon City is a city without a house.

NOTICE. THE RIGHT KIND OF DEMOCRACY. Kinging: Letter, from the Wheel IIor.se of Kansas Democracy. WOODSDALE! The only Town North of the Sand Hills in Stevens Kas. on the line of the CHICAGO, KANSAS WESTERN RAILROAD XOW BEIXGr BUILT FROM Medicine Lodge, Cold Water, Meade Center, West Plains, Dudleys, VOODSDALE, Moonlight and Richfield, to the Coal Fields of Colorado and New Mexico.

Thus by pluck and energy Topeka, April 4, 18S7. Col. S. N. Wood, Woodsdale.

Dfar Col. You or some one else has id the kinbness to send me No. 4 of Vol. 1 of the Woodsdale Democrat, dated April 1, 18S7 and I have re-d it with pleasure. I have read over several times the article in tbe first column the first in which you say: 'If the Democrat of i The following petition will be presented to the Board of County Commissioners at their next regular meeting, Monday, April 11, 1887: Woodsdale, Kansas, March 1, 1887.

Woodsdale has Secured two Topeka would drop the liquor question and advocate something better for the Part) iT- would be much better, etc." The article is a short. cne, hut it is full of solid sense and wisdom, from beginning to end and I am glad to ste a man who is a Democrat having the courage and wisdom to write and publish such an article. I assume that you wr te it.

If so, I congratulate you. It contains simply the sum and substance of what I have been contending for, for the last four or five years. I always have been contending that the Democratic party should take an advanced position upo.i all of the great public questions of the day and keep itself abreast with the intelligence, wisdom and advance thought of tie age. Advocate something honest, decent and manly that is calculated to better the condi-tnn of mankiud and not be etermlly finding fault with the progress of the age. The people are constantly striv-after something than that which we have, and they will continue to fol i Xotice.

Notice is hereby given that the following-named settler has filed notice of his intention to make final proof in support of his claim, and that said proof will be made before probate judge at Hugoton, kansas, on May 25, 1887, viz: Julius F. Grouser 7891 for the lots 1, 2 and hf ot ne qr of sec 2, tp 32 37. He names the following witnesses to prove his continuous residence upon and cultivation low the lead of that political organization that furnishes them some as-surance of a realization of their hopes and expectations. I trust that you will be able to advance the cause of Democracy in southwestern Kansas.

Yours very truly, John Martin. When the people come to under- No one Doubts that Woodsdale will he the County Seat. The town is situated in the midst of a gentle rolling prairie of miles upon miles in extent, and is unequalled in fertility and beauty. There is now a daily stage line from Hartland, and arrangements are being made for another from Lakin, with a tri-weekly to Layfayette. The town has three public wells of the purest water.

It is found in rock, and is much cooler than generally in southwestern Kansas. Woodsdale is on Government Lands settled under the National town site law. Under this law the man or woman that builds upon a town lot is sure to get it. Government land is in abundance within a few miles of town, and is still sudject to entry under the homestead and pre-emption laws. It is being taken rapidly and every day's delay costs the settler valuable preferences in the selection of his home.

Before you conclude to locate come down to Stevens county and see the most beautiful country in the state. There is no question but that this is the best wheat country in the world. Do not Invest Without Investigation With a soil and climate equal to anything in the state, or in fact anything in the world, we invite you to come down and see us; we guarantee a suitable home for the farmer, the stock raiser or the fruit grower. As a fruit growing country it cannot be surpassed. Deep warm soil, heavy enough to protect the roots and not easily washed from the crowns; the climate is well adabted to growing peaches, apples, apricots, grapes and all fruits.

DO NOT PUT OFF COMING But set about starting at once, for all the indications are that ten eastern home seekers are coming to southwestern Kansas this year to where there was one during the past year. 1 stand the metropolitan police bill, woman suffrage bill, grand jury bill, and see their practical workings, they will partially understand the ignorance and stupidity of the Kansas Legislature. Sand Hdl Herald. We quite agree with the Herald about the ignorance and stpidity of the Kansas legislature. If the editor of the Herald succeeds in keeping out of the penitentiary, he can thank the lnte legislature for it.

They claim they bribed the county attorney of Shawnee county, claim they have bribed the supreme court, claim that they own the district court of Stevens ouity, cliim that they have bought an "indulgence" for past crimes, and can produce "indulgence" for th se to be committed in the future. while all this may be true, they do not show a bit of sense in blowing abDut it as they do. Micon is locited on the south line of Stevens county, is centrally located east and west, and will make in the near future a thriving town.
