Wood and Miss Anna Gardner were placed in nomination for County Superintendent, Bob Sherar did not make as good a nominating speech for Jones as he did for Phillips a year ago; Walthall, in his usual mumbling, inaudible utterances, gave Bixby a poor start; Bob Shelby gave his colored brother, Wood, a lively send off, and the Osawatomie Bashi-Bazouk made Rome howl for Miss Gardner. Several ballots were taken with Wood gaining, when he was withdrawn with Bixby, leaving the contest between Jones and Miss Gardner, and the latter was successful. The platform, which was shrewdly left to the last, was then brought in, though the delegates were leaving in dozens. It simply re-affirmed the National and State Republican platforms and was adopted. A few delegates from the 1st District remained and nominated T.

Of course in a A CANDID LETTER. Walter Thayer, President of the State Trades Assembly of Jfew Vork has written the following letter concerning Governor Cleveland and the workingmen: I bave been informed that a statement has been published to the effect that while in Chicago at the recent Xa-tional Democratic convention I stated that I could pledge the vote of the workingmen, of this and other localities, to Governor Cleveland. I wish to state that no such expression ever fell from my lips, and that no interview with me was ever published in which I made sucli a statement.

On the contrary, I stated that no man could pledge the vote of the labor element of New York State, or of any portion of it, to any candidate, nor did any man have sufficient influence to cause it to be cast against any candidate. I stated that if any man pretended to pledge the workingmen's vote to any one candidate he did so without any authority. I stated that I had no authority to speak for them on political questions, nor had any one else. I was asked what my personal preferences were, and 1 said that I preferred Governor Cleveland. When asked my reasons, I expressed them as follows: Fontana Items.
