The distance was four hundred feet, and the boys laid two hundred feet of hose in the same pnd got water in twenty-eight and a half seconds. The last contest was also won by the invincible Monitor Hose Company. This wan a hub and hub race for a purse of twenty dollars, in which the Monitor, the Arcade and the hook and ladder companies participated.

Tho distance was three hundred feet, and tho first was won in seventeen seconds by the Monitor, and the second by the hook and ladder company. In this race the Arcade Company fniled to be ready when the word "go" was given, and the race was run by the either two companies with the above result. The Arcade Company dissatisfied and e-hagrined at their discomfiture, and anxious to show the people their efficiency, have challenged the victorious Monitor Hose Company to a contest, to take place next Wednesday for a purse of twenty- W. Band for their beautiful and enlivening music on our streets occasionally and it seems to us all the people of the city should have attended their entertainment and invested their spare nickels. Last Saturday the Arlington House property was sold to the C. G. Lamed Land and Live Stock Company, of Garden City, for the neat little sum of fifty thousand dolla rs. The property has been conducted as a hotel by our enterprising citizens, Speed Crenshaw, and if the purchasers will continue it a hotel under the same management, it will prove a profitable investment.

This is an indication that the wheels of Wellington progress have not stopped. All that is required to make them spin is just such lubrication as this transfer now and then. There was a very picturesque but rather unfortunate scene, early this morning, in one of our alleys. A team of mules ran away and collided with one of the private buildings, anil just alxut the time it was losing its equilibrium and falling to the ground a certain modest gentleman was seen nd heard emerging head first with a frantic grin from the building in a condition that would have been embarassing for any one but a Sandwich Islander. The point is these buildings should be securely fastened so that an accident of this kind could not occur.

The people are getting anxious about that coal that has been in prospect for so long a time. Three hundred and forty-one feet, and no signs of the coveted mineral is not very encouraging news. The Daily Press says the Ladies' Aid Society, of the Christian church, are in need of one hundred dollars and will give a supper to supply this want.
