Mullin. riainville, August 20, 18S3. Henkie Ghavps of the Jlillbrook Times says that he wants to be county clerk and that it will be to the interests of Craham county to put him there. This is why he has renounced his grcen-backlsm and joined the great independent party which has no principles or opinions to be trebled about. Tiik Gaylord Herald hap spun its big Webb, and says that Wirt W.

Walton of the (Jlav Center Dispatch, will be the next secretary ot state and that if he objects the northwest will torcc liini to trtke the office. We do not believe that the northwest will force Wirt Walton to be secretary ot state; on the it our opinion that the northwest is considerate enough of Wirt's feelings to let him stay'on the outside of the office It he so wishes it, and will never lift a finger to make him secretary of state. McBiffcKN'S malicious slurs published last week against the republican county cmtral committee and other prominent republicans who were present, are appreciated by those gentlemen. Maureen's method of opening the greenback thunder campaign is a strange one, but the sentiment is characteristic ot the man lie threatens already to bolt the republican ticket if It doesn't suit him. but as his affiliations with any party is only a rope of sand (so easily does it break) the republican party will not care a snap of its linger whether be Is with it or against it.

We are convinced that nobody wants to run T.hc republican party this year, and that the campaign will be perfectly harmonious so fur as our side is concerned. Advice from a hybrid politician like MeRrcrti, ho is utterly devoid of principles or political views, is not needed by the republicans. Tub Paola Spirit exposes Jenkins A. Fitzgerald, ot Washington. Mr.

Fitzgerald's scheme consists of sending out, to applicants for pensions, a bill of 8 as balance due tor prosecuting pension claim, wording the letter to convey the idea that Hie necessary certificate has been procured from tho pension department. At the same time a package is sei.t by express to the party marked C. O. a8. The applicant on being no-titled of the sealed package in the express office, pays the S.

and 50 cents return charges, thinking sure that the long looked lor certificate has come. On opening the. package Jl li Xouud to contain only a blank lor affidavit re-girding proot and a receipt for the $3 together 1th a letter stating that on account of not hearing Irom the a pili-eant promptly, be "Fitzgerald' has concluded there is something wrong with the U. S. Mall facilities; therefore lie has sent the blanks by express to be ure that U.ey are delivered.

This week a gentleman here received 0110 of the letters mentioned In the Above, but after advising with C. E. Monell he concluded not to take the express package, and he is, consequently $3 and 50 cents better off. Those having claims for pensions, will do well to look out for the "Fitzgeralds," for, on account of their swindling operations, they have been disbarred from practice before tho pension department. Kir-wiu Kepublicai A MAT signing hiuiselt "Itepublicun" criticises severely Superintendent Clark lor taking a trip to and leaving the of tho 'office during his absence in charge of Mrs.

Clark. The News, of course, takes the cry and advises the commissioners to "ei -pilre into the facta of the caxe." It is no republican who starts this uncon- tdonablo tirade against our efficient! public officer, Mr. Clark, but some greenbaekcr who wants to get somebody ot his own political fai tii squeezed Into the place, knowing lull well that he. complexion of tho board would in-uic such a. re ult.

The facts ot the the county and got bis official aflkirs Into shape, so that he could leave with out neglecting a single item of his du ies. Mrs. Clark attends to the office of superintendent just as capably as be did himself and there is no cause for complaint in any particular. By preach ing while out there he is able to make his expenses, and we know ot 110 law preventing him from making money outside of his office. Those who begrudgehim his trip lor health and pleasure, would do well to abandon all idea ol forcing a greenback superin tendent upon ihe public.

Tiik surveyors of the B. M. rail road in Nebraska have surveyed a route down to Smith Center from Red Cloud. and the inference is drawn that the company intends to extend a line down to the K. P.

or to the Sante Feroad. Stockton ought to be one of the flag stations on that line. San Fk.vxcisco will soon have several permanent splendid monuments to the cupidity of her bonanza kings. Iceland Stafford has alreafly a big house on Nob Hill in the city which cost a million dollars. Mrs.

Fair, the divored wife of Senator Fair, is about to con struct a much finer one than that, while the millionaire Flood proposes to construct a residence, to be the finest in the United States, which will alone cost $3,500,000, not including the value of the ground. One good feature in this lavish expenditure ol wealth is the employment it gives to labor, whereby the vast accumulations of capital are dissipated among the people without impoverishing at all the possessors of these stupendous fortunes. The more money they put into their beautitul palaces the richer become the mass ol the people. if all the millionaires should live as simply and as cheaply as common folks their enormous incomes would increase from year to year until they absorbed all the property of tho country. Fortunately for the good 01 mankind there is Implanted in every human heart a pride and love of dis play that leads us when we have more than we need lor our personal wants, to scatter the surplus on things ol little or no utility.

In this Way nature, the great equalizer, provides a remedy of her own tor the evil effects of avarice and acquisitiveness. We are therefore glad to see the money nabobs vie with each other as to who" shall have the costliest things ol earth. Proceedings of the Board of County Commissioners.
