Kansas City, Kansas, THERE are always people who must make a noise without knowing what the noise is about -and then others must make a noise because they hear one. One fool newspaper can make more trouble in a town or city than a runaway mule, or a frantic Texas steer-and these two disturbers of nerve centers are proverbial for effiolency. NEW YORK's theosophical society is made up of all kinds of religious believers.

Spiritualists have sat side by side with hard-shell baptists and dignified churchmen of every denomination. The meetings are opened with the reading of an old Hindoo book. ILLINOIS, which was once regarded 88 the granary of the continent, has for several years produced less than enough to supply her own consumption. THERE are many patriotic and intelligent people who declare that owing to the dropping of English grammer too early in the public school course, and the attention devoted in the high schools to other languages, the worst English is to be found in the high schools. laymen have come to the conclusion that they can no longer unite in singing the beautiful hymn, the burden of which is, "Nearer, My God, to Thee." What is worse, they cannot remain in church while it is being read or sung.

'The complaints against it are that the author of it was a unitarian, and that the hymn itself contains no reference to Christ or the atonement. SEVERAL orthodox clergymen and THE general public does not take the interest it should in planets. BREAD and milk is one of the most popular dishes served for lunch at the Congressional restaurant in Washington.

Glasses of pure cream or of half cream and half milk, are greatly in demand among the Congressmen who come from cities, but they are avoided by the rural members. THE custom of a water boy to carry ice water through the cars began on Connecticut railroads during the war, when water was carried through the cars to sick or disabled soldiers, and it so commended itself to the public that in 1864 a law was passed making the service obligatory on all roads running through the state. Use MARSE'3 GOLDEN BALSAM for Coughs, Colds, Sore Throat an Consumption. FACTS ABOUT FINGER MINCS. History of the Use of This Well- Known Ornament. The practice of wearing finger-rings has been almost universal. from an early period in the world'! history.

There is a tradition which ascribes their invention to Tubal, Cain, and the Latin authority who gives currency to the story speaking of the wedding circlet, says: The form of the ring being circular- -that is to say, round and without end- -imparteth this much, that mutual love and hearty affection should roundly flow from one to the other, as in the circle. and) that continually and forever." The first authentic reference to tinger-rings occurs in the old L'estament, where (Genesis xxxviii.) mention is made Judah's siguet-ring. That they were also in use among the Egyptians at that time is evident from the 41st chapter of Genesis, where we read of Pharaoh taking off his own ring and putting it upon Joseph's hand, when he made him over all the land of The hands of female mummies, found in the tombs of Egypt, are profusely covered with rings; the wealthy ladies of that country wearing costly ones upon resisters every finger, while their poorer had to content themselves with circles of bronze, glass, or pottery. Persians, and The according ancient to Chaldeans, Herodotus, the the Babylonians wore rings; and it is propable that from Asia they were introduced into Greece. In the later Greek legends the ancient heroes are spoken of as wearing them, and at a more recent date every freeman throughout Greece seems to have had one.

The earlier, rings appear to: have been used not so much for ornament as for the practical purpose of affixing seals; but later on they became merely ornamental, and were set with precious stones. The Romans, who are believed to have derived the custom from the Sabines, wore signet-rings of ironas was the case with the every freeman had the right to wear one. Ambassadors in the early years of the republic used to wear gold rings as part of their official dress, this jus annuli aurei being afterwards extended to Chief Magistrates, Senators, and, later on, to equites. A Emperors were wont to confer this right on those whom they wished to favor, and the privilege became gradually more and more extensive, until in the time of Justinian all Roman citizens could avail themselves of it. The later Ronans used to wear many rings their fingers, some even having different ones for summer and winter, the height of "dandyism" was reached by those who never wore the same ring twice, but threw it away when once.

Boston, Masa Persons without prejudices "are generally insipid. They are very nice people morally, but usually lack force of character: We like men who have decided opinions of their own on all, important subjects, and who make a stout fight for them even when in the wrong. for in the sharp attrition between minds of opposite prepossessions many a brilliant spark of truth is struck out. Every, human being is, or ought to be, prejudiced in favor of his native land, according to the ON. Y.

Ledger. We have no sympathy with the cosmopolitan who says that all countries are alike to him. It is not necessary that the Englishman who loves England should hate the French, or that an American who insists that the United States is she nation under the sun Miss, depreciate the country. To believe that there is no place like ho no is wholesome, Christian partiality; but to laugh another man's home to scorn beeause it is not a fao simile of one's own is illiberal and ungentlemanly. There is no harm in being prejudiced in favor of one's country, one's family, or one's friends; but your people who will quarrel on the ninth part of a hair, out of sheer obstinacy and litigiousness of spirit, we most cordially despise.
