Howard, one of Jiurrton's early settlers and business iv.cn, came down from Dodue City lat Wednesday. Ho If ilouii on business, intending to remain eight cr ten days and purchase a few car loads of grain, vegetables, to take back with him. We have at last got comfortably settled in our new ofliee, our stovepipe adjusted, and everything running smoothly. Our job press and material are here, and from the amount of job work that has been flowing in for the pa.st few days, are not likely to remain idle. The boys at tho Commercial House, last Sunday evening indulged In a little music, vocal and instrumental, selected from "Gospel Hymns." With a little practice they might, we think.give a Sunday school concert.

would sugeest that a hall would be a better place to "practice." We acknowledge the receipt of an invitation to the Masquerade Ball, to be given at Hutchison, Thursday evening. Nov. 28th, '78, at the Court House. Prof.Oakcs' orchestra is to furnisli the music, which is sufficient to insure all that is desired in that line. The committee of arrangements and floor managers wiil, no doubt, have everything "correct." We are authorized to announce that there will be a sociable held at Mrs.

Sones' next Tuesday evening. For further par-ticulars inquire of Miss Matthews or Miss Fraync. We understand that this is the beginning of a series of entertainments of this kind, which wo think will not only be of benefit to Burrton's sociable people but might be classed among the blessings. Neithar of the church societies have seen fit to start anything of this kind. Fred Wiseman, and party returned from Medicine Lodge lust Wednesday and reported a pleasant trip.

While there they were Instrumental In the capture of a couple of horse thievos. The circuui. stance wa3 related to us as follows: Last Saturday night, while at Woodruffs ranch on the Medicine, a couple of men stopped to make enquiries for a couple of horses that had been stolen from thorn near Marshall P. O. in Sedgwick county; soon after they left, Mr.

Gregg, and two of Woodruffs boys came in from a hunt, and hearing the description of the stolen horses decided that they had seen them and started after the owners, who, as soon as they wero overtaken, came back to the ranch and raised a party to look for tho thieves; they were soon found nd proved to be the parties wanted. Had it not been for the interference of a few disinterested parties the thieves would never have been brought to trial in this world, the Mediclue boys being In for sending them to "higher courts." The name of the thieves were given as Tom Vaun, living on the Medicine, and Bill Henry from near Wichita. They were started to Wichita Sunday morning. fit ft S. aeon Builder.

Phillips delivered his farewell address last Sunday night, to a crowded house. His sermon was shot and eloquent, and, in conclusion he spoke of his troubles since livins here in the loss of a child of the kindness shone himself aiid family, especially by tho members of other churches, in the last and sad hint's of its life. The license tax levied on our merchants, to some may seem rather burdensome, but a practical illustration the other day ought to convince them it is not too heavy. Two or three wagon loads of apples were brought into town by parties from another part of the State, and had it not been for the license required for the selling of fruit, in the city, there would have been a loss to our merchants of quite a neat little sum by their selling this fruit some cheaper than our merchants can af ford to sell for; and by the way, we think a car load had been received Just a few days previous by merchauts here. The parlies rather than pa the license drove on to hud a town where the people idn't care about helping to support the town by paying a Incuse and at the same time protect their own interests.
