M. ALLAWAY, Official City Paper. S. LOOFBO UliRO Editor. The Oonnty Toots the Bill There is but little time during the year that there ia not one or more prisoners in jail being boarded in good style at the county's expense.

There is no good reason why the ounty should not avail itself of the labor of these prisoners, and by this means receive a recompense for the outlay on their account. The following is the lull text of the law touching this subject, and it is the duty of the county commissioners to take the proper steps for carrying out its provisions. Suck action would savt the county several hundred dollars per annum, and like action on the part of the city council would be productive of equally grat- CONTRACTOR AUD BUILDER, Clay Center, Kansas, December, 8, 1883, The enforcement of the above law would aid materially in improving our city and county by making hotter streets and better roads, and this by simply applying according to law tha labor that has heretofore been allowed to go to waste. Let those whose duty it ia take the proper steps at once lor the carrying ont of the provisions of this act. If nectary let the people of the county petition the commissioners to maka immediate provisions for its effectual enforcement.

At present our jail does not eeem to be much of a "terror to evil doars;" but with this law applied it would probably have fewer charms for ita lawless patrons. Being myself a Republican, and having full faith in that party as a political organization, and filly endorsing its position on the vital political issues of the day, this paper will in the future be distinctively Republican in politics.

Being a Prohibitionist from principle, and believing that no other plan can ever, in any event, accomplish the overthrow of the mm power, and that legal prohibition, supported by a healthy moral sentiment, and a loyal purpose on tne part of officiils and citizens to enforce aud obey the law will accomplish it, this paper will advocate that principle, and urge the strict enforcemeut of that law, the same as any other law.
